I think Lemmy has something a kin to survivers guilt because the lyrics are so simple and the song didn't take much effort, that he feels that it isn't worth the hype it receives.
Good vid. One of my fondest memories was getting thrown out of a Motorhead show because we wouldn't sit down. They were opening for Ozzy, and we were standing outside the venue listening to Ozzy starting his show when suddenly Fast Eddie came walking up to us. He had seen us getting tossed out, and came out to say hello. He then gave us a backstage pass so we could go in to see Ozzy and "his guitarist Randy Rhoads- you've got to see this guy!". Good times.
@@firefox3187 At the Paramount in Seattle at the time, you were not allowed to stand up at seated shows. People got thrown out a lot there. The only way to get away with it was if everybody stood up. Sadly, the vast majority of the Ozzy fans were yelling for Motorhead to get off the stage, yelling out "Fuck you punk rock" and other insults. Funny how things change.
I filmed & photographed Phil Taylor's funeral and produced & displayed his life in video set to music at the service. I also patched in a tribute from Lemmy & the band from the US. Ace of spades was played on repeat while we waited for the cortege to arrive. They were late & we had to listen to it about 7 times ... 🇬🇧
I was introduced to Motorhead while watching The Young Ones when I was young. 😄 I thought, "WOW! Who hell are these guys?!" I'll never forget the cameras showing the wrong guitarist when the other guy was playing the solo. "That's the way I like it, baby. I don't wanna live forever!!" 😆
The difference between being a musician and being a comedian is that a musician can make a living playing the same songs for decades, but if a comedian tells the same jokes year after year no one would go to their show.
That is unless you're one of The Blue Collar Comedy guys, Jim Breuer, Roseanne Barr, or any other American comedians now labeled right-wing or conservative comedy except Dennis Miller. Most of them can just beat a dead horse for decades and their fans loved them for it.
Well if you wanna talk about a comedian that goes over the same crap that would be Andrew Dice Clay like how many different ways can you talk about fking a chick it was cool at fist but just got so repetitive.
I first went to see them on the Ace of Spades tour at Leeds Queen's Hall on 28/03/1981. I had a terrible bout of flu at the time and could hardly stand up, but I wasn't going to miss it.
I guess I was 6 years old when I first heard Ace Of Spades. Give that song to any 6 year old now and see if they crank it up and play it again. I still love that album all these decades later. Something about that raw power is infectious. And I still remember what I misquoted lyrically back in grade school and it kinda sums up the song perfectly... I ride my motorbike all over your face. The ace of spades. The ace of spades.
I have another one for you. Janie Lane from Warrant, speaking of "Cherry Pie", said he wished he'd never written it. I believe he called it "that stupid song". He wrote it because the record company wanted a hit, and he got sick of singing it.
Motorhead were a great band mate. I saw them live on quite a few occasions back in the 80's & 90's. I have all their early albums & a lot of their later stuff, too.👍🛸🎸🍺🍺🍺🍻🍻🍻😎👍
Even artists that say they love their top hit often are just suffering though it. It's part and parcel of being a rock soldier. I think that there should be a balance between the old and new. The concerts where top bands just play their top hits leads to a boring concert. Artists that refuse to play their hits make you resent them for it
I still enjoy listening to the Ace Of Spades, I grew tired of seeing it on every "Metal Compilation Albums' during the 80's & 90"s, I have nearly all their albums, and my favourite album so far is 1916 , Going to Brazil and Angel City are excellent tracks.
Yes, bands become tired of playing their hit song for audiences. Just think of the Beatles, where half their songs were hits. That must have been hell. But seriously folks, this is the price of being a rock star. Every time they play a concert, they are working for their money, and the fans are paying their salaries because of that hit song. PLAY YOUR HIT SONG! It's better than working on an assembly line in a factory.
I used to do quiz nights & did a music round. I was sick to death of hearing the clips after a few run throughs so imagine having to play somethng every night, every year, for decades.
Motörhead is truly one of the most underrated metal bands out there. As a teenage metaler in the 80’s, I was shocked when a fellow metaler would say “who?” When ever I mentioned Motörhead. Perhaps it was bad management or bad promotion but they deserved better
Ace of spades is a good song but Motorhead have many songs that are just as good. It does get overplayed. I always thought Lemmy got frustrated with the fact that it overshadowed Motorheads other material.
I think I remember hearing Lemmy saying, that eventually he would sing it as "The Eight Of Spades" instead of "Ace of Spades" just to see if anyone would notice. Apparently not.
4:20 I very much doubt any Ford Transit of the time could reach 90mph. I remember that Radio 1 played a lot of heavy rock around 1978-82... and barely a note since then. I wasn't a fan of the genre but Tommy Vance did have the perfect voice for a rock DJ. A record with an arguably similar velocity and fire is Ultravox's Young Savage - not a hit, but still a great track that hardly anyone heard and nothing like their later work.
I have every Motorhead album. They're musically more diverse than the average listener thinks. Their first album is closer to punk for example, with some Hawkwind remnants. They did a few slow bluesy songs throughout their career. Listen To Your Heart is almost like a folk music stomp, and even a heartfelt ballad about the war dead in 1916. They're a bit more more diverse than say AC/ Dc or most punk bands, but it's true that lot of their stuff might sound the same if you're not really a fan.
@@chriswilkinson7636Lemme was quite diverse, he would play anything but a lot of Motorhead was that formula.. .. riffing bass power chords over open strings in e or a.
Saw Motorhead live at The Spectrum in Montreal in the early 80's. Awesome show, but, it was SO absurdly loud, bones down to marrow have only stopped vibrating FROM it about a week ago, swear!
"...after the Ace of Spades their popularity faded among the general public...." uh, no. The subsequent live album, No Sleep 'til Hammersmith, went to number 1 in the UK.
The only song just about anyone knows is Ace Of Spades! Maybe a few might know bomber. I'm a a big Motorhead fan but i hardly ever listen to Ace Of Spades, it's just too cliched.

Saw motorhead in London Wembley Arena , so loud you could not tell what some of the songs were, some loon had his head in the big speaker at the front. Much better in Portsmouth !
Most of it is probably that playing a song 2,000 nights in a row gets pretty boring. Lemmy's criticism of his early work is probably common amongst musicians. James Hetfield said that he was embarrassed by Seek and Destroy even though most Metallica fans love it.
I can’t listen to it anymore too. The whole of the Ace of Spades LP is probably their pinnacle, for the quality of the production to the songwriting. I just can’t listen to the title track anymore.
You need to learn the correct facts. Motorhead released their first self-titled album in 1977, which reached no. 43 in UK charts. Therefore, they have released 4 albums prior to Ace of Spades.
But then, at some point you gotta accept: Fine, this song is a hit. Why not fly with it? Case in point: Metallica and Enter Sandman and Seek & Destroy. Hetfield has once said that he has at times been embarrassed to perform Seek. :D
I have never liked the song, even I've been listening Motörhead from early 80's. It's so overplayed which I'm totally sick of, like there was no other songs to play in their short 4 decades career...

I met Lemmy a couple of times and he was very nice and kind and gave time to a shy teenage kid who was star struck
That sums him up. He really was a good bloke.
I remember buying the Ace Of Spades album in my mid teens and annoying my family by playing it loud. RIP Lemmy, Philthy Animal and Fast Eddie🙏
For me, the best song Motorhead did was 1916. It is so raw and emotional. It puts you into the heart of the song.
Yeah but that songs not Rock n Roll like their other stuff mate. Still a great tune though I must say.👍👍🛸🎸🍺🍺🍺🍻🍻🍻😎👍

I can confirm that it was cool for punks and metalheads to have a Motörhead patch on their jackets.

A Transit van doing 90mph in 1980? Lemmy was an excellent song writer and very underated
To me every song just seems like a different version of ace of spades they literally have one riff played differently like maiden
They did use the same bass intro for a number of different songs 😂😂

Bommer? Try it with Bom(B)er

What else would people confuse Ace of Spades with??
And Black Sabbath/Paranoid - Sabbath hates the song. So do I...
@7:15 you do know Iron Maiden was formed only 2 years after Motorhead.
Don't kill me but the only song I know is Ace of Spades. That bass line does the heavy lifting of the lead line

Metallica are talented enough to have a lot of crowd pleasing songs. They can change their live set around every night.

Metallica NWOBHM? Nah man. Influenced by it, inspired by it, yes. But not NWOBHM. Like you know, not being British at all is a factor there!
Def leppard are not heavy metal they are pop rock.
You're right - it's a silly term for a band like Def Leppard but they are widely associated with the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM).
The 8 of spades.
Hang on, Motörhead have more than one song?! Since when?
I'm sorry but did you just include Metallica in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal??
My bad, that was worded strangely - I meant ‘later, Metallica was inspired by New Wave of British Heavy Metal’

Tony Hawks pro skater is the reason i know this song, the singing sucks
Interesting take! I'd say the vocals are one of the strongest elements of this song!
