This is one of the best reviews I have seen in a long time here in RUclips. Thank you so much for going in-depth on each aspect of the camera. The inability to delete a clip on the SSD on the field was a shocker. Been contemplating buying a Mavo and your review did shed lot of light on so many aspects of this camera I wanted to ask. Thank you so much for doing this.
Thank you very much. Kinefinity at one point did have the ability to delete clips, however they got rid of it because they were getting inundated with emails from people asking for help retrieving accidentally deleted clips. I feel like those people kind of ruined it for the rest of us. This is why I put that quote "Maybe just the option?", hoping that Kinefinity would see their way through to adding a base option in the firmware to activate this ability, with the caveat that they won't help you get them back if make a mistake.
This is an hour and seven minutes if you think I'm about to take the time to watch this entire video YOURE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!!!!!! Thank your for taking the time to create this. Hopefully it can answer my questions because I've been torn between all 3 models of the kinefinity cameras!
Love it!!! Super Nice Review and Great shots - What does the Overscan in some of the frame size do ? (not sure if i'm wording this right) or is there a benefit by shooting in overscan versus normal ?
Nice, I’m really thinking of buying the terra 4K now that a higher FPS is coming. How is the work flow in these cameras? I heard the cdng has color problems in davinci! So that has me stumped on pulling the trigger I have a gh5 and 2 pockets 4ks I would sell one pocket if I buy the terra, but trying to fig out if it is worth the extra few thousands
The work flow is straight forward, but this obviously depends as much on how you shoot/review/backup as it does on the firmware file system. The cdng no longer has problems in Davincii. Jihua, the president, posted in the forum about this topic, where he also gave the proper project settings for Davinci. This was an error on my part, I forgot to include these settings in my review. completely slipped my mind. I haven't used the pocket 4K, so I can't give fair input there unfortunately.
very nice! thanks for the video! did you upload the files you recorded? for instance, the last ones? I'm curious to try grading the footage myself and see how the camera performs :)
Very welcome. At the the time I provided them to some people but I don't think I have them anymore. Go on the Kinefinity Facebook and you'll find plenty of guys who can provide some RAW.
I would like to ask you about the sound. At the beginning you mention that you are happy with the sound, but in tests, in my opinion, everything except XLR - NTG-3 is super noisy, I would say unusable. Do you really manage to generate a good sound using a 3.5 mm connection?
I think there are a couple of factors here to consider. All mics were placed about a foot from my face. So consider that the NTG-3 - a shotgun mic, is placed one foot from my face in a quiet room - it better be the best sounding mic in the lot considering those conditions. I normalized sound to 0 db, obviously this is going to pick up the noise floor a bit, depending on the mic. I personally think the 3.5mm sound I'm getting is more limited by the quality of the mic than the connection. With minimal sound editing, I'm able to produce what I consider to be acceptable sound from the 3.5mm. That being said, I'd like to upgrade away from the rode videomic pro to something better. I also chose the EMW because of limited cord noise and water resistance. That being said, you will no doubt get better sound from the XLR than the 3.5 mm as I think the tests obviously show, so if it worries you, I think your best bet is to throw the Kineback on and use a proper shotgun for run and gun. I have done this in certain situations.
This camera has a lot ghosting effect on the edge when subjects move or when camera move. Like the kid at 59'min for exemple. What's the ground of that ?
That fire engine smoke scene, if you were to use anamorphic lenses it would've looked more epic. Hope kinefinity watches this review to improve their future cameras
No. However, you will find several people on the public forum who have made music videos with either it or the LF and at least one person who has filmed a feature with the LF. I'm sure they could give some thoughts. I also gave some more in depth thoughts on this in my convo with Jean-phillipe below.
Sorry about the understated nature of that clip. The rolling shutter ironed out a bit when rendered, so it was less noticeable. There certainly are times when the rolling shutter is unacceptable, mostly during handheld or similar footage at high frame rates. I would advise for erring on the side of caution when planning shots of that nature, mitigating where possible, swinging the camera left/right.
@@stidkriss I'd like to answer this question more accurately, but the thing is, there's a new firmware out. Each firmware seems to increase the stability of the camera. I hadn't updated the firmware because I was in the middle of some contracts and wasn't willing to risk issue, since I don't live close to a rental house. I still get a bug here or there, but they are always just small UI glitches that can be resolved by changing to a different screen and coming back. Rarely do they require a reboot. Because of the lack of UI on the side screen, I still consider the Firmware version I'm using, a Beta. My assumption has been that the New Firmware is probably even more stable, in which case, yes I'd use it on a big set. However, if I was going to be on a big set, where money is flying out the window for crew and B or A listers, I'd also make sure I had at least two, tested backup cameras, and I'd have contacted Kinefinity and made them aware that I'm using their product on a big production and I expect that if I have issues, someone knowledgeable is ready and willing to answer the phone or service the camera on short notice. I think they'd probably be more than willing. They're good people.
@@BhTFilms isn't rolling shutter due to capability of processor to process the image fast enough. i guess with the advancement in technologies this will be gone , but for now it is there and i think the more the image frame data the more pronounced it will be ..for 6k it will be more horrible than 4k and also the frame rate.
@@andrewskater17 you're very welcome. They actually brought it to Cinegear for me. Great people. It was one of the first models, so the delay wouldn't really be applicable to now.

one of the best camera reviews I've ever seen. very comprehensive. great work!
Thank you Keaton!
Great timing and amazing review, Phillip Bloom level! I've had my eye on this camera and the Terra and this helped a ton.
That's quite a compliment. Thank you.
I just wish anyone out there doing reviews follow your lead, thank you.

Thanks!
Holy Cow!nice review how could i miss this!
Bravo on this. I sold my kinemini few years back and am super happy with c300mkII. Still appreciate a good review though. Hat off to you sir.
Thank you sir!
Great review. Thank you.
Can I ask what made you go for the Mavo S35 instead of the Terra 4k or Mavo LF?
Awesome!

it's the end of august 2020 - are you still shooting with the mavo?
Yep! Though I haven't been doing much shooting lately. I'm in preproduction right now.
Should I get the Terra or just save some more and get the Mavo (not the LF... definitely can't afford that right now)?
Unfortunately I haven't used the Terra so you might have to refer to to existing comparisons for that one.
