  • In this video I speak about one of the most important aspects of Gurdjieff's Fourth Way. That of Self-Remembering.
Self-Remembering is something which must be done, its an energetic activity that one must undertake and carry out.
I share some quotes from Kenneth Walker and Maurice Nicoll to help us to better understand this powerful practice, as well as some of my own understanding and observations.

Well done. Nothing is really happening unless within us. So many spiritual self proclaimed teachers. Gurdijef seems to be the only guide closee to our times.

I agree. Or at least the one that resonates with us the deepest. 🙏

Can't just hope for change. You have to put in efforts to bring about a change.

Thanks for the video, Lewis. Untill now Maurice Nicoll's book reading was the one that I have enjoyed the most for it's practicality. You can get lost in "Gurdjieff" and forget the basics, I think.

I agree. The practical aspects of the work are important to create a foundation to build upon. Nicoll’s commentaries are wonderful. Did you read Beryl Pogsons biography of him?

Thanks for the book recommendations. The only reason I got into Gurdjieff was because of self remembering. When I first started I used to use being caught at traffic lights to self remember. Currently reading Salzmann’s The Reality of Being

That’s a great alarm to use for remembering! We must use anything we can to help us awaken. Reality of Being is one of my favourite G books. Such a wealth of wisdom in there!

I am new to this channel - thank you. I understand that self-remembering is meant to be about being conscious of our patterns and to expand our awareness. Yet, I find that myself engaged in being overly self-conscious which is limiting and negative - not empowering. I realize this is quite a distinction but I struggle with this.

Hi Ken, and welcome to the channel. There are a few distinctions in the terms that you have mentioned, and it’s all very subtle.
I think that the first task is self-observation. This would be what you describe as observing our habits, patterns and automatic reactions to things that happen in life. Once we realise we are asleep and react to life mechanically, then we can begin to try to remember ourselves.
A moment of self-remembering is where you are present in all three centres, not only with the thinking centre. A good way to begin would be to sense your body (feet on the ground, bottom on a seat, wind on your face), then to get a sense of how you are feeling in that moment (emotional centre) and then to fully have an impression that : I am alive, I am here, I am present..
Then it will dissipate and go away, and we begin seeking the next moment of self-remembering.
Feel free to send me an email if you would to discuss anything further, and there is also a playlist full of commentary videos which you can find here:

Just a note about the four bodies
Carnal, Natural & Spiritual comes from the Pauline Epistles, the fourth body Divine comes from Christian Theosophy's Christus in Nobis.

Hello mate, excellent video! Thank you! A few cents that I wanted to share with you, please consider getting yourself a Casio GBD 100, GBD 200,GLX 100 or Timex Vibro. These watches have vibro timer that can remind you every X amount of minutes to remember yourself. The vibro timer really helps as it doesnt distract others, around you but is helping to stay in moment of self remembering. These models are ran on a cell battery and would last pretty long time (unlike many smartwatches which you would need to recharge).Wearing this type of watch at home/work can help in building out the habit. Cheers!
