    AMAZING cinematography. I will forever be kicking myself that I never made the trip down to see this myself.

    Every Fall, the Autumn Leaf Special would carry suburbanites from Peachtree Station in Midtown Atlanta 90 miles northeast to Toccoa,GA ( the last stop in GA on Amtraks Crescent from New Orleans to New York Penn) for the Fall Festival. My great grandfather worked for the Southern RR from the 20’s- 50’s. So it was a treat every year for me and Papa to ride this excursion from Atlanta to Toccoa and back. One of the most memorable years was the fall of 1983 or 1984, the 611 was our engine. She was a mighty engine and you could definitely feel the force and hear the heavy train making the gradient up the Piedmont foothills. I can still smell the coal mixed with a crisp fall day. Oh, and my grandfather lived in Toccoa so looking back I appreciate the redundancy of his trip. But it was for me to experience a little of his childhood and me to include these memories in mine.

      She's amazing. I grew up right next to Roanoke with my Dad (who was foreman of the NS wreck crew at the time) telling me all sorts of stories about her, then she was placed in our local transportation museum for a few years, where I got to go climb onboard and really look her over. She's a wonderful machine, especially considering her age. That was before her most recent refit. If they do it again, I'm volunteering. I actually know what I'm doing with metal now lol

    If 611 had another chance to come up to Pennsylvania, I hope to see it operate with the Reading & Northern 2102! I think 611 would look excellent with 2102 and a double header steam lash-up with 2102 and 611 would be amazing! I saw 611 when it was operating with the Norfolk & Western 475 at the Strasburg Railroad and that was an amazing event. So, if the Reading & Northern can get 611 back to Pennsylvania to run with 2102, I would love to see it leave Port Clinton on it's way to Jim Thorpe! Now that would be a splendid sight!

    • @ns4270railfan
      @ns4270railfan 4 месяца назад

      @@BlueCometProductions I haven't thought about that. Yeah, the 2102 and 611 are really heavy steamers and there might be other bridges that might not support the weight of both of them, but it would be nice if 611 came back to Strasburg to run the 89, 90, and 475. I knew that 611 had put on a great performance with the ghost whistle at Strasburg.

    Super video - enjoyed the shots of the foliage with 611 steaming through the colors. Doesn't the thick black smoke indicate an incorrect firing of the locomotive? It looks great, but I thought all the black smoke coming out of a steam locomotive is problematical?

    • @LukeAlfordUKsteam
      @LukeAlfordUKsteam Год назад

      Steam in the US tends to create black smoke far more than any other country's engines.

    • @EZOne58
      @EZOne58 9 месяцев назад

      A lot of the thick black smoke means it's not being efficient as say with lighter less smoke from what I understand. Also, the thick black smoke was supposedly put on for show and pictures

    • @catreader9733
      @catreader9733 9 месяцев назад

      If you are burning coal, there will be some black smoke, especially when taxing the engine during start of move, acceleration, and heavy pulling (e.g. uphill grade). Not sure about the heavier, darker smoke in this video.

    I am confused... what are the diesels for on the end? I took a trip on this train as a kid in the 80s, but back then they still had some of the original Norfolk & Western cars (although they were kind of sketchy even then), but the train then didn't need any help, I am guessing that is what the diesel's are for.

    • @Beesrcute
      @Beesrcute Месяц назад

      I’m guessing for support for 611 and electricity for the coaches?

    • @shawnvanhorn3754
      @shawnvanhorn3754 Месяц назад

      @@Beesrcute Yeah... I was a bit confused, maybe it is for electricity, but I would think that the 611 would have enough power to pull those cars. When we took a trip on it, a long time about, nearly 40 years ago... they even let us off around a curve, stood in a field while they backed the train up, then they came back around that corner at what seemed like quite a speed, so it was fully smoking and whistling for a photo op. There was no other train... and the cars did have electricity back then. I only remember that because my Father told the story of going to Alaska one summer via train, my Grandfather worked for Missouri Pacific, so they traveled cheap, if not free on trains. This was in the 40s, he said they were on the oldest steam engine he had ever seen even back then, his Dad who worked for a railroad didn't even think that train would get them across Canada, LOL! My Grandmother who never complained even said it was a really crappy train... I don't remember what Canadian line it was, but they said it was so old to turn off the lights they had to unscrew the bulbs at night, LOL!
