One thing I've learned in 21 years of film making and 221 films is today people like to rip apart all forms of art. I've learned that no matter the budget of films, not everyone will be happy. There are artists trying to make entertainment with the resources they have. This was done back in 2003 when digital was trying to take off. The story is a story that hadn't been seen before (crossing elves into modern day time frame) other than Christmas Elves. It was my first feature film. Yes there's problems in it (like any other film), but you do the best you can. Indie films are different than high budgeted films, but I've found stories that can outdo any high budget film. Sometimes audiences need to just enjoy the story for what the artist is trying to tell instead of jumping on the bandwagon of being a troll. You'd be surprised what I fixed from this film (knowing what was wrong at the time) and remade it into what some are saying is a master piece. People loved making films with Wolf Productions (some stayed over 10 years worth). When you all have passions and stories to tell, it can be a great time.
So, like I tell all critics and trolls being you know how to make a perfect film, how many films have you done from zero budget to millions of dollars? Like everyone we are all learning and we'd like to study the masters to better our own craft. Where is the links to your work?
Finally, one thing I learned from experience... if you have questions to something and don't know the answers...ask the source you're doing the piece on it, so people don't get the wrong idea when your answers are wrong.
(Side note) there was no lavs used in the car scene with the FBI, so in the background that isn't a lav. The chess board was a background prop for the Father/Daughter to play. The extra scene where Agent Hardman gets killed actually took place during the month that Lythorin was gone. When Lythorin found out his wife was still alive, he decided to break it off with Amber to rescue her (hence Unexpected Race 2). The father mentions in the future time, "You were always there..." How can one time mean always? Means they had further adventures together for a time, which you'd find out more in Unexpected Race 2-3.
If you are going to spoil a whole film, next time say spoilers.
The important thing to know about his 221 films is by "films" he includes not just his feature-length films but also music videos, trailers for movies he's never made, and so on. So he's made several feature-length films and a lot of shorter things.
Great to see you in the comments here, man! Hope you don't mind if I write a long comment here.
Firstly, 221 films?! God damn, I know GBorBB said you had done a lot of them, but that's incredible! If Unexpected Race was your first feature film, then I would honestly say that a lot of the things in the movie make way more sense.
As for Bryan and Kyle's on work, its worth noting that they have a series called Broken Dreams where they rip apart just how terrible their own previous film projects were. One of the reasons I like this channel is that they're self aware.
Honestly, when it comes to indie films, I've always been of the opinion that as long as everyone had a good time making the film and you made what you wanted to, then I'd call the whole experience and product worth it. You definitely don't come across as the Neil Breen or Tommy Wiseau type, which is good. Just a guy who likes making films and works with what he's got and I think that's great.
Also, thank you for clearing up the post credits scene and when it takes place. I actually did go watch the movie after this review and to be fair to Bryan and Kyle, it was a little confusing. However, it now makes much more sense why the elf left Amber.
No idea if GBorBB will do any more of your movies, but they certainly made me go look at some of your trailers and I find myself genuinely looking forward to more from ya.
@@vsGoliath96 Thank you. Thats why I like when someone doesnt know an answer to a question...ask the source!
I agree with you and vsGoliath about how the fun that goes into making a film is as much justification for doing it as the artistic aspect is, and I do believe that you've improved a lot as a filmmaker since creating The Unexpected Race, but I have to say that the 'you couldn't do better' argument is really disappointing to see from you. It's a cheap way of disregarding valid points without actually refuting them, and it makes the person saying it look petty and condescending. Same thing goes for viewing critics and trolls in the same light; if someone really can't tell the difference between a person offering valid critiques and someone who is just trying to piss them off, (or if they can tell the difference and choose to ignore it) that's a problem. You'd think someone who's been making films for 21 years would be a bit better at taking criticism and not feel the need to make up excuses for themselves. A simple "this film was made 16 years ago and doesn't represent my current ability" would have been an infinitely better and more respectable response. Saying nothing at all would have been even better. Also I know this is a minor point, but when a discussion about a film is longer than the film itself, spoilers are kind of implied.
Critics are one thing, but to take down every scene and either make fun of it or to trash it is another. Also, it's not excuses when mine are valid answers to explaining what people don't know about the film. For example the whole piece on the makeup. I agree it was to much, but there was an issue on the day of filming. As we were setting up the scene I let the makeup artists do their craft and they put to much on her. I wasn't happy with it, but because of having a short window to shoot the film we couldn't take down half the makeup. When the shot dissolves to her and theres less makeup, that wasn't the next day. Time had passed enough for some of the injuries to heal being she was in ICU. However, being I knew this was an issue, it was fixed in the remake to the makeup I wanted to see. (Does this refute the issue? Or explaining it make it seem like an excuse?)
As for criticism... what is the difference between criticism and making fun? Just curious if there is a difference. My definition for a professional critic is one to balance the pros to cons and take sections out of the film in a non judgemental manner (ei: siskel and ebert). I always respected their voice. This doesn't show those guideline but an attempt to break down each scene and poke fun at it. Am I not right? Also, the minor part about being spoilers... Like many films now a days, they are trying to keep a lid on how much of their movies are being released to the public. The remake of this will in time be released. If they break down every scene and show every secret in the film, what is the point to see the remake with Jack Black? As the director of my film am I not entitled to be a little upset?
Final note, thanks for your words and apologies if answers I have given were looked at as petty and condescending.
Lets start a GBBB drinking game.
1.Bryan leans into his mic and whispers
2.Bryan screams loudly
3. Kyle grasps his face with both hands
4.Bryan runs his hand through his hair
5.Kyle stares blankly
6.Kyle forgets a part of the movie that Bryan is describing
7. Bryans yells OH OH OH!, and then talks about a part of the movie he just remembered.
8.2 Drinks if Bryan's camera breaks
9.3 Drinks if Kyle's camera breaks
10.Chug a whole bottle if Yoda falls over.
Add Bryan calling things delightful. He doesn't always but does a lot in this one and I fucking love it
Bonus round if something makes Kyle go *WHAAAAAA...?!*
Nah, I dont want to commit suicide yet lol
6 and 7 brings back some fun memories lol. I love when they happen.
This is a good way to die of explosive liver failure before the video is even over.
I was cheerful seeing that there was a comment response from the movie's creator. Always before it's been a telling of how they got to have a good laugh at themselves and the humor of the review, preceded and/or followed by appreciation.
I finished the first half of the first sentence and then, "Oh dear..."
A labor of love is a labor of love. Why should criticism, especially lighthearted criticism, demolish that?
Yeh, that was a disappointing read, but creator input is always appreciated nonetheless, an opinion evidently shared by Bryan and Kyle with their pinning the comment.
every time i see a comment on this video with one reply, i know without fail it's the director trying to defend this movie before even clicking on it to check.

@@GoodBadorBadBad *Leaves. Gets stung by bee. Waits for elf. Elf doesn't come.*
wait, if the film is 1 hour and 12 minutes , and this video is 1 hour and 13 minutes, then it's like I saw the movie without actually watching it.
thank you for your service.
_English girl's voice-over narration_
"When I was in hospital, someone asked me if I needed anyone to talk to.
It was in a different voice from her usual voice, but she did ask me."
Actually the voice over was the same actress done on a different day. The background noise really ruined a lot in that scene being a fish tank was on and we couldn't get rid of it. The ADR wasn't the best but then again, we do the best with what we had back in 2003. Production quality does go up as the years follow.
1:01:05 Brian's "why don't youuu fight me like an elf?" just gets me
Bless you for making these long, entertaining videos for me to watch while I'm working. I'd get nothing done without you.
I have now added Grooblade the Fedslayer to the D&D campaign I'm DMing. An ancient elven shortsword found in some ruins deep in the forest, guarded by the ghost of the elves killed by the feds.
But what are the stats on the knife? Is it truly worth having for a great hero or is it a starting out weapon?
@@utahwolfproductions9231 Oh holy cow, the man himself appears! Don't worry, I did the blade justice and placed it pretty far into the campaign as a pretty impressive weapon.
I mean, I'm not exactly sure what I'm going to actually do with the thing, but it'll be fun to have!
@@vsGoliath96 This is glorious, I am so so happy you did that.
@@dub5936 Okay, I've got it! Since Bryan made a reference to Sting, I classified Grooblade as a Shortsword +3 with 5th Edition D&D rules. Since my campaign can't really fit in FBI agents, I gave it 1d8 extra damage to demons. Closest I could get. I've set it's location deep inside a ruined elven city destroyed by said demons. Seemed appropriate.
@@vsGoliath96 I believe Gary Gygax would approve.
30:25 You guys missed the pan flute guy playing it like it has holes in it
nothing gets me more pumped for an episode than hearing the movie took Bryan down another rabbit hole
From 1987 to 2003, "The Great Land of Small" was the number one movie in Canada. A force of nature really. It's on RUclips, and it's the greatest thing "America's hat" has ever produced
Wait a sec... I'M IN LONDON! AND I barely have a first family, let alone a second one, sooo... If Kyle's still looking, I'm here? Can't cook, can't clean, don't have a career, a car, or an apartment, but if Kyle's looking for a below-average mid-20s female, I'm available!
Man you weren't kidding about being below average

I had a friend in High School who was from England. She was in the states for only 3-4 year at that point and she had a weird hybrid accent. In the State, everyone said she had a British accent, and when she went back to England, everyone said she had an American accent. I can only describe it this way: she sounded American at the start of every word but she would sound British at the end of the words she spoke.
What couldn't be added to the film being we were trying to get to the main part in the story was. Being the actress was from England and had the accent, she couldn't lose it for the film. We had to add that she went to( boarding) school most her life growing up and picked up the accent. The mother was from England herself, but again couldn't give to much back story on the parents being we wanted to get to the reason the girl had to stay with the father and find the elf.
i knew a guy that was scottish origin, spent his teens in australia and now lives in the southern united states; it's a very strange hodgepodge of brogue, bruce and y'all.
So, like a Mid-Atlantic sort of thing, then? Because that never sounds natural.
**"You picked up Level 9000 weapon 'Groo-blade the Fed Slayer'!"**
With days and months of studying, learning with science experiments and potion brewing. I have come to a conclusion that my Second Officially Official Recommendation short movie is called Swamp Ape. Full movie is on RUclips. So it should be an easy one to review! 👌

It reminds me all too well of that "Pay me 'X' and I will stand far aside the burial with all black clothing and a black umbrella to make it seem as though you had some dark secret" meme.
"The beating of my heart would stop if you were not next to me..." (Elf girl moves behind a bush to poo.... Elf guy dies from a stroke)
Me at the end scene of this movie:
"well, someone saw, Vampire hunter D: Blood lust".
1:00:34 - amazing "magic knife" there, being able to hit a man 45-degrees off the throwing trajectory.
love the fact that during the scene of the feds shooting all the elves, they couldn't even afford blanks.
Well to shoot blanks you need the replica guns to be able to fire. Also, the extra permits to where we were filming would have been to much.
@@utahwolfproductions9231 wow, dude. Hoping you've calmed down in the past 4 years because holy elves. Try to enjoy the extra publicity such channels bring to your channel and productions
If Kyle wants to have a second family in Finland, I'm on board 😘
Subscribed for Grooblade the Fedslayer, you magnificent bastards
David Spade as an elf. Interesting
I just watched the Insufferable Groo doco, amazing. Highly recommend
Frank Welker 😊😅😂.
Can someone explain this quote: "I've done everything I can for your father, but he should be fine". Huh? Maybe if you'd done less, he would have stood a better chance???
The elf used his life force to heal the father or he would have died. Nothing more. This was said to save it for the unveiling at the end.
Some of my family friends of mine recently got divorced because they found out the dad had a girlfriend & several children in another state. He had a sales job that required a lot of traveling & he told both women he was traveling for work when he went to see the other...had been going on for well over a decade. So it at least happened once in real life.
I swear you guys seem to know when I have a shitty day and release a new GBBB video to cheer me up
I haven't been resting and I won't until you watch The Covenant, or until you say you won't do it. You can't hide behind your silence for long, goofs!
Not gonna lie, sometimes I come back and rewatch this review solely for that fucking piper elf. xD
Piper elf needs to become a new cutaway gag for their later episodes.

29:26. "Welcome to Olive Garden. Can I get you started with a lead cocktail?"
Grizzly Adams? Elves? I wonder if there's a connection between them and the Nazis.
Not to this film. Originally the thought idea was Native Americans being genocide by white men with a fantasy twist.

Well Kyle has 20 new families now, I guess
All those gun shots and not one muzzle flash
I’ve been a huge fan of Stephen’s for almost a decade having grown up in Utah. My favorite feature length film of his is “Challenge of Faith” and my favorite short is “Guilt” (which is on Amazon Prime). “The Insufferable Groo” is also a must watch. There’s an interview somewhere on RUclips of Stephen and the makers of the documentary with Utah public radio host Doug Fabrizio that’s a great follow up to the doc.
Has it been 2 weeks already? Hot dayum!! Friday just got better!
48:40 Kyle genuinely really needed to know the answer there.
WHY WAS THERE A CHESS BOARD RIGHT THERE?!
Hi Kyle, it's me, your brother from Germany!
Swede here, volunteering to marry Kyle. We basically look the same too, it's destiny.
This is like literally my favorite movie
my friend from mississippi came to visit her family for the summer one year and all we did was hang out and i got a small southern accent from it. not forever obviously but i had one for a month or two, it just felt natural at that point to speak like that.
I love Mississippi.
41:10 Podma and Anakin? POD - MA?
Elves in Tolkien live forever, unless they're killed or get fed up with life (after - that's literally said in The Silmarilion) roughly a million years. Even if geologically that's a very short time, it's a fucking LONG time to be alive, anyway.
If Kyle would like a second family in Korea we would be happy to welcome him over here. He seems like a super nice guy. My uncle is looking to marry off his daughter, so if Kyle wants a wife in the deal, I think it can be arranged.
THE ELIMINATORS(1986)
A former pilot rebels against his creator, teaming up with the scientist responsible for android technology, her pet robot Spot, a rough-and-tumble riverboat guide, and a martial arts warrior.
When you first started, I was thinking it was a (poor) play on "An Unexpected Journey".
I still don't comprehend why he called it that...
Kyle, I'll be your weird cousin from Russia anytime
"The Matrix and elves do NOT mix together". i feel like that phrase belongs on a t-shirt.
Good concept of paper, but poorly executed. Much like Netflix's Bright. 😁
It worked for the shadowrun games!
Totally got the Smash TV reference. It was my best friend's favorite game and he practiced it all the time on the Super NES when it came out. Then he want to the arcade and had a crowd watching him as he got so far on just one quarter.
I will be Kyle's second family. He can claim me as a brother from another mother.
I apply to be Kyle's elderly father who needs a son to send him money on a monthly basis. It's tough living in Brazil without an American son to help!
If I stumbled across two people making out and one had eleven ears, I'd pull up a patio chair and some popcorn.
Watching the character arc.
It's been 5 years and I just noticed she says "Why am I falling in love with something i read in a book when I was 2 years old?"
Who is READING at age TWO?
Chiwetel Ejiofor 😊.
So in that scene where they chase all the elves so thats the entire race? So either all either rgey would all die out anyways or they would all be inbred eventually. Because the entire race is the size of a family reunion
50:54 is frigging hilarious and adorable. Kyle bringing dem stats
In regards to the lifespans of of elves in Tolkien, to the best of my knowledge, they're completely immortal. Age cannot touch them. Galadriel is easy over 10,000 years old and she's far from the oldest living elf, merely the oldest in Middle Earth. As for the explanation for how Arwen becomes mortal? Fuck man, I don't know! Haven't read the books in years.
Expect the unexpected! ... race...
"FBI Briefing" is the new "Location Map"
Smash TV reference? I LOVE IT!
Legal weed in Canada and your show go hand in hand 🤚
Was watching this again, and after you mentioned there are two sequels, I wondered why you never covered them watching this again 5 or so years later. But then I see at the time the creator commented and he didn't seem to like your video. So I guess you never covered the The Unexpected Race 2 and 3 because of that? Though you did cover another 2 of his short films, so I have no idea.

Maybe I missed something but if the main elf guy (I don’t know how to spell his name) can “give part of his life force” so people live longer, why didn’t he do that for Amber if most of the “conflict” was that humans don’t live as long as elves? Lol.
