No tape needed, go to a sports store and but tennis racket wire; it’s the same material on the actual drum . Now this next part is tricky but easy; you’ll have to stretch the wires across the top of the bottom rim and keep the tension as your putting the head and top rim on that. I did this by myself so what I did was tie the wires on one end through the lugs and pulled the other end with pliers as I applied the head and rim. Hope this helps ! Mine actually sounds like a real snare and I’ve seen dozens of people with these and struggle to get the sound they prefer so I’m here to give my little secret 👌🏽
*Tries to find an alternative Snare Drum pad, for 100% real feel, and cannot afford a marching snare drum* "First your gonna need a marching snare drum..."
you can march with it like malik dope drummer just get one of those old school leg rests and im guessing put a couple tension rods on it and somehow attach it.
could you just join the top and bottom rims to still have the top and bottom head as well as the snare wire, to make sort of a high tension piccolo snare?
Have you considered trying the snare insert from a Remo Rhythm Lid? Seems like you could manipulate the metal platform to change the snare tension (albeit in a rough sort of way). At $15, it would be a cheap way to add a snare sound.
Did the exact same thing but it sounds like the Spock on a tenor set now. Any idea why? The video cut so I think every kissed the part where you make it sound like a snare.
So i built mine and im pretty sure i did it right but my shell less snare drum sounds like a lower tom on a set of quads. It doesnt have that sound that yours does...i bought a nice evans head and everything....was wondering if you did anything to get your specific sound and if not maybe do u know what i did wrong...?
if it’s a kevlar style head, they really do need cranked pretty high to get a less resonant sound like his drum in the vid. if it’s resonating go by quarter turns until it’s legit tabletop-tight. if it’s not really resonating or sounds out of tune with itself it might actually be pulled, meaning the head and the ring have separated and it can’t be tuned. rare but possible for a new head
Thanks for making this video! I've got a hand full of older Pearl's like that that I've restored but I've got one that's exactly like the one you used there and its pretty well beat to shit so I think I'm going to try this out! Keep up the great work, love it!
Yo sdjmalik, im havig some trouble, i ordered a Xymox drum pad 12in and i received it yesterday, i was wondering how you get such a clean sound from yours becuz mine is very ringy and unpleasant to listen too. Thanks.
Hello im a big fan of marching snare drums i have the pearl competitor snare would that work with it like how your turning that snare in to a pad im also getting the xymox hybrid snare drum
Cosmic Knight no it only works with marching drums cause they have the double rim, a regular snare drum only has one rim and no bottom rim like a marching snare does. But if you get it to work some how sure haha :)
You would need to attach the clear bottom of the drum to it then add the snares because it's not the snares alone that add that sound but the snares vibrating on the bottom head.
Dylan Wyatt you have to take it apart slightly different. For the Yamaha, you have to keep the rods that attaches the top and bottom part of the double rim together, and detach the longer rods that holds the double rim, and bottom rim (rim under the shell of the drum). Once you detach, you’ll be able to create your shell-less snare with the Yamaha
hey man it was really cool, real, you can do a normal ride without the white hull, with the hardware and the mat, I'm in doubt as to what it is, thanks man, I love your videos
Or what you could do is ask your drumlines director at school if you can have old heads that have been replaced with newer ones and do the same with the rims and screws
Can’t. The heads on a regular drum set lay on top of the shell (on most drums that I know of), and the rim is tightened down to it. With a double rim marching snare drum, the head is laying on top of the bottom half of the rim. That’s why it’s imperative to do it with a marching snare drum
I tried to do it with the snare from my old drum kit and the head of the drum got super loose no matter how much I tightened it is there something I’m doing wrong
L Joe I’ve tried to, but it’s pretty difficult to find parts desperately. Our best bet is to find a really cheap snare drum on EBay and taking it apart
I like the idea and it's cool. You don't have to lug around your snare, the carrier, or stand. But barring all that, why disassemble a perfectly good marching drum? Send it to me sdj!
You ever try to sell a drum no one wants? Ive got a 30lb premier thats heavy af. Its getting stripped cuz im not wsiting for xymox to send me a snare pad
hi there would this work on a pearl competitor snare because i accidentally broke the snare straightener thing because i found one video of someone playing a snare pad like yours from a pearl competitor
xXEvangelXx I hope your joking Bc/ sdj obviously can do amazing stick tricks but he has some of the best chops and playing on a snare I’ve ever seen in my life. #keepitfrosty. Your my inspiration for becoming a better snare drummer and musician! Keep up the great work.
Yamahas are easier to work on. Not a fan of the sound of this contraption. It still sounds like a high pitched noise box in my opinion. I'll stick with my Drumslinger Corps Pad. I have the 13 inch Corps Pad with a chrome diecast rim and a Remo Tendura head. Feels like a free floater and sounds great. Bill Olsen is great to work with and the customer service is also good. Mine took only three weeks to arrive.

Buy parts on eBay or buy a really cheap one on eBay

Use an old beer keg it has a similar feel but a different and unique sound

Maybe this will help: ruclips.net/video/1TIPxhgRaRE/видео.html
This is really cool and all but what if we don’t have a snare drum could we buy a rim from some where
Hey, Sdjmalik. Is it possible to do this with a used Dynasty Wedge Snare Drum? Bought one from eBay, but it's missing the snare wires for it?
What is the easiest way to put the snares in
Try using the rhythm pal snare clip from remo

I made one of these about 10 years ago using an old Yamaha snare. If worked well.
Hey how much h you practice rudiments?
A moment of silence for the 2 tension posts I had to sacrifice for this 🙏
I have not tried it but maybe you could clamp the straps of the snares inbetween the 2 rims
Is it possible to buy individual parts and make this??
