On a Yamaha SFZ snare I would put Evans MX5 on the bottom and Evans Hybrid on top and if I was using Pearl I would use REMO heads instead. Use Black Max on top and remo ambassador on the bottom.
hey malik- you’re actually god tier, i was wondering how long it takes to tune the entire snare drum, and how many rotations you should take after the key locks onto the lug🤔
Hey brother, you made my day a lot when I saw how you changed the head of your snare drum because I bought one of those heads and it cost me a lot and I know that this expense was worth it for that sound quality
all right this was helpful but no matter how i tune my drum it always rings or has loud overtones if you will...any advice on how to get rid of them or maybe just quit the ring a little???
My black snare drum used to have that ring you're talking about until I switched my heads to Remo Fallam II for the snare side. Although I think it depends on the snare drum and heads, that could be why your snare drum has that ring to it
Get small sheet of paper towel and fold it into a square. Tape the paper towel to the bottom of your drum. That should help dry your drum out. Also, you can place some tape across your snare guts as well. Good luck
The ring is what makes the drum project. You want the drum to ring as much as possible. If it's for solo use, tape some paper towels on the bottom head.
So the trick is the falams 2 equipped to the bottom, I have been going crazy thinking that electric snap would come from having a dual snare system… or that is even more done with this same method.
In panama we use the pearl snare with ebony remo drum head and temo ambassador remo snare and the sound is so so so good !! If you want you can join to my channel I have many videos😊
You should really take off each lug slight bits at a time following the star pattern. It’ll slow down the warp of your rim. Don’t tape one lug off completely at once, do each progressively. And vise versa on
Hey bud. I'm a new marching drummer for my FD. I'd like to start a drum core to add to my honor guard, and I have to ask: What's a decent, marching drum shell that I can start with that's good for serious beginners? I have no experience with drum core, but I have to start somewhere.
I’m using a pearl championship FFX 14 X 12 and the same heads Remo heads in this video. When I play, I still get an ugly ringing sound the same pitch as what my bottom head is tuned at. I have no clue what I’m doing wrong
Step 1. Take Evans heads off Step 2. Throw them in the trash Step 3. Get Remo Fallam II snare side + either a White, Black, or Suede Max snare drum head. Ringing will be gone.
I would put Evans MX5 on the bottom and Evans Hybrid on top. If you want to use REMO heads instead then I use Black Max on top and remo ambassador on the bottom
Depends on a lot of factors. If there’s no “snare” sound, then you know you have to adjust the bottom side. If the drum sounds really low, then you know it’s the top. It depends on your scenario which there can be a lot.
Hey Malik, do you need to have the same brand top head as the bottom head? It’s my first time tuning and I’m thinking of using an Evens top head and a Remo bottom head
Unless the snare wires themselves are broken/damaged, there shouldn't be a need to manually adjust each wire to get a snare sound out of them. In most cases, if a snare drum isn't getting a snare sound out of it, you'll have to twist and align the snare drum shell with the guts so that the snare wires are touching the drum head.
Bro! Why are you putting the gear onto the ground/grass? Aaaag cringe. What I would suggest on an nice work bench, and give the the lugs a good lube and polish the drum up and you’d be sparkling and sounding amazing.
Before every practice, we played frisbee with a spock drum head(only the drumline though. We didn’t fw wind players😂)
Hey Malik. Can u do a experiment to see what a snare sounds like with a batter head on the reso side
Jake Donehoo it’s sounds the same we have a drum at my school that where the bottom head broke but we had a extra batter head so we put it on there
Needsmorecowbel L interesting
Batter heads are too thick to give decent snare response. Even Kevlar bottom heads, like the falams II, are really thin compared to top heads.
I've tried that in a pinch. It sounds like nothing, it sucks
Don't waste your time doing it
On a Yamaha SFZ snare I would put Evans MX5 on the bottom and Evans Hybrid on top and if I was using Pearl I would use REMO heads instead. Use Black Max on top and remo ambassador on the bottom.
Great video man! Helped me get mine sounding perfect after years of messin around!
great video!!! happy holidays!!! greetings from the Philippines!!!

How to change a tire 101
Thankfully I know how to do that as well 😃
sdjmalik next you should show us how to tune a tire
@@CavinLee ☠️🤣🤣🤣🤣
I like to bring the strainer tight horizontally and bring the vertical one tight, then loosen it a little so I get a nice, pop sound
Just bought a used Yamaha SFZ 14". This video came in handy, thanks for posting.
I love your version of a tuning video. Very straightforward unlike the Remo videos
this is years back, but i need this. thank you
“Proceed to use it as a frisbee.”
Stay with you Fame you are the best
Speaking on drum frisbees... one of them hit me right in the nose!
Right before a show too 🤣 bloody nose and everything
0:20 My name is on there lol 😂
Your names Remo?
First comment!! Love ur vids! Keep it up! 😀
Great job!

Can you do a tutorial on the flam paradiddlediddle grid?
Wow the sound...Very good Brother...🥁🥁🎶🎶👏👏👏

nice im here really early iv been waiting for the next vid for a while
wow now i can tune when i get my first snare
Was wondering why I wasn’t getting any snare response from my drum. Two words. SNARE BEDS 😂 thank you so much for the video Malik
Does anybody know why my snare rings like a lot even though I followed his tutorial
What kind of drum heads are you using?
Evans grey hybrid snare batter and
And I think Remo falams snare head I believe I’m not sure
I think it’s the Evans head that had that nasty ring to it. When I changed my head to a Remo white max, the ring went completely away
sdjmalik ok I guess I will try that sometime thank you sir!!
i had a ring using a falams ii & a black max. i made a little patch with tissue paper & taped it to the bottom and it took the ring away.
In panama we use the pearl snare with ebony remo drum head and temo ambassador remo snare and the sound is so so so good !! If you want you can join to my channel I have many videos😊
When Malik said to throw the heads like a frisbee when I changed the heads, I actually threw the old heads as a frisbee 😂
I'm not even a percussionist, but this video is still really interesting.
Love it
Thank you
I’m getting a bad snare response out of my drum and I don’t know why, I tuned them all evenly and I think the heads are to blame, I’m not sure though
That ridge on the drum shell is called the snare bed.
Thank you for letting me know
What is the best home studio microphone for marching snare drum?
Coming back to this video in 2023 as an instructor really hits different. You really are an inspiration to my idea of tuning ✊🏽
i still use this video to this day, i’m very bad at tuning 😂
how high pitched should the bottom head be?
Nice video! Some of the videos have the person just talking and they never hit the drum! Nice hands man.
0:18 what is that spin trick called? How do you do that?
Can I do it on a 90 dollars drum
Well, I turned the like button white hope that’s still cool. 👍🏾
how long was bro tightening the snare side head like he went from 1 pm to 3 am
yes finally!
Hi dude. What's up?
We have the same surname.
But mine spells with a letter C at the end.
Nice video. 👍
Shout out
Can you teach us how to tune n02 on a car???
Where can I buy one?
You should really take off each lug slight bits at a time following the star pattern. It’ll slow down the warp of your rim. Don’t tape one lug off completely at once, do each progressively. And vise versa on
Those heads weren’t going to be used anymore and were old so that’s irrelevant. I can see your point if they were new heads though.

I have the same exact snare that you have
I’m using a pearl championship FFX 14 X 12 and the same heads Remo heads in this video. When I play, I still get an ugly ringing sound the same pitch as what my bottom head is tuned at. I have no clue what I’m doing wrong
Try running the guts up a bit more aswell as the bottom head
What is a Foul em type head?
I put on my heads which are evans hybrid grey and evans MX5 but i hear a high pitched ringing after hitting the drum, can someone help?😭
Step 1. Take Evans heads off
Step 2. Throw them in the trash
Step 3. Get Remo Fallam II snare side + either a White, Black, or Suede Max snare drum head.
Ringing will be gone.
put some tape on the bottom head
@@endermanunboxer4566thanks but i converted it into a marching snare drum but with only the double rims
@@sdjmaliki needed help with ringing bro not drum head brands
You missed my point. Evans heads were the culprits of my drum ringing, and they’re likely the reason for yours as well.
What type of drum is that
Yo Sdj, how long both heads last if I crank it up to that high
So, just crank the shit out of it? lol. Love you bro.
Can I put an Evans Hybrid at the bottom and a Remo Black Max at the top?
I would put Evans MX5 on the bottom and Evans Hybrid on top. If you want to use REMO heads instead then I use Black Max on top and remo ambassador on the bottom
Okay but how do you Know if like the bottom head needs better tuning or the top head?

can i use other snare side head?

what is this monster snare drum
Why does my drum sound like it has echo? it's like it keeps vibrating the lid and sounds like a can, it's not a dry sound

watch Matt savage videos from Remo and make sure you pay attention. You'll know when you need a new head I'm new too.
Where can I buy the snares for the bottom of this drum?
Hey Malik, do you need to have the same brand top head as the bottom head? It’s my first time tuning and I’m thinking of using an Evens top head and a Remo bottom head
I'd stick with 1 brand. Plus, the Evans heads (on a pearl snare drum) puts out an ugly ringing sound
@@sdjmalik Thank you 🙏
Why are they so high pitch in the first place ?
snare drum tuning, its just the norm
When you do a rim shot, it should sound like a popping sound.
Are snares tuned to a certain pitch or are they just tuned to a tacky sound
Unless the snare wires themselves are broken/damaged, there shouldn't be a need to manually adjust each wire to get a snare sound out of them. In most cases, if a snare drum isn't getting a snare sound out of it, you'll have to twist and align the snare drum shell with the guts so that the snare wires are touching the drum head.
Does the quality or brand of the drumhead matter?
Yeah, it does. If you use certain drum heads in certain snare drums, it could drastically alter the sound quality.
Thanks my idol.
One snare drum pearl
I absolutely love the sound don’t get me wrong because I play snare but that’s gonna Disturb the neighbors
I want to become a snare drum player seeing all of these people and drumlines wondering why I don't have one realizing that my family is not rich 😣😥
There are cheap used ones on eBay you can start out with, or even Facebook market place
You're amazing man thanks as an 11 year old I really needed that help
Worst part is the first drum sound is how sum of the school actually tune their drums in my county
God advise
I wish i can try but my snare is trash
heh, take rim off, put threads in dirt. I keep missing that step.😆
