Why you need a Food Journal NOT Calorie Counting

  • With over 45 million of us on diets each year and our society's health continually declining many of us are in need of some real support & lasting change when it comes to our health! Clearly diets don't work and quick fixes are leaving us worse off than when we started.
    So what are we suppose to do?
    Start looking within to build awareness around your eating habits, relationship with food, and why you are continually stuck & frustrated. The answers we need aren't in the next diet, fitness program or app! We have to uncover what is really going on so we can start implementing small changes that are sustainable. And that is where our Food Journal comes in!
    Our Daily Food Journal is not like other food journals! We don't focus on calories, macros or points. I know that might seem crazy in a world that is hell bent on telling you to eat less, workout more and endlessly pursue a desire to be smaller, but we have a different philosophy.
    We strongly believe there is MUCH more value in uncovering your eating motivations, discovering your relationship with food and understanding your habits. When you know WHY you are doing things you can begin to implement strategies to make sustainable changes. Simply logging calories and committing to eating less is a short term bandaid to a deeper issue and long term problem.

    I was looking at this thinking "I don't eat that often!". I'm so glad you mentioned 2-3 meals per day rather than 6! Great video. Thank you!

      Thank you for watching! Yea I don't eat that often either, but many do after decades of having the message drilled into our heads that we need to eat every few hours - 3 meals and 2 snacks. Science doesn't support that and I think people are starting to shift to 2-3 and feeling much better because of it! :)

    I need a journal since I only eat 2 times a day and I need to make sure I am eating the right foods so the journal will help me see what I am lacking or over doing.

    Thank you so much for this video! I was looking for journaling and intuitive eating. Journaling helps me in all areas of life and many articles on intuitive come from an ED perspective, and advocate not tracking at all, which is not relevant for me. I can weigh myself frequently and journal about food without being triggered. But I have decided no more calorie or even portion tracking as I had done WW for years. But I do want to be aware if my veggie portions are declining or I’m reaching for sugar too frequently and what feelings led to that (fatigue, stress, etc). Journaling is a key activity for me and my wellness journal isn’t focused just on food - mood, walking, therapy notes etc.

      Thanks for watching, so glad this video was help for you. Yes I don't advocate calorie counting, weighing yourself, etc for anyone (ED or not). Its a slippery slope. When you focus your food journal on the eating experience it gives much more useful insight and its key not to get in a habit of chronic food journaling as it can become obsessive.

    I am interested in purchasing your spiral bound journal but do not see it listed as a purchase on the website??? I did notice on one of your comments in response about a printable - what does not mean? TY for the video, it was very easy to follow and makes sense about moods, hunger rating & food.

      Thanks for watching this video. We use to sell this food journal as an insert for disc and ring bound planners. Unfortunately this past year we encounters printing and production issues are had to discontinue all of our inserts. We've thought on releasing this as a printable - meaning you purchase the file to download and print it yourself. We may look into offering a printed version in the future.

    How many days after a meal will symptoms of intolerance show? 2 days? 2 weeks?

      Hi Daniela! Tracking food symptoms can be tricky. For some the symptoms are immediate or within hours or a day. While others can see symptoms 3+ days later. It can be very hard to nail down what is causing symptoms bc of this. I think the best route is to track food, track symptoms and do that for at least 30 days and see once you have enough data if you can find a correlation.
