Add tensioner pulley.....Very common. Changed my SERP belt at 60,000 and noticed the tensioner unit shaking side to side. Showed the video to my dealership tech and he said it needs to be changed. FCP and ECS has a good kit under $150 for everything you need. Tensioner with new bolt, drive belt, and idler pulley. Lastly, I have 72,000 on my N55 and along with 5000 mile oil changes, I routinely put in only 6.4 quarts or basically a tad less than 6.5 with the mindset that any possible overfilling will just add to the eventual OFHG, OPG, or VCG leak. you should always get a tune if you're performing mods that will affect the flow characteristics of a turbocharged vehicle. In some vehicles the extra air cannot be metered properly on the factory tune and this can cause engine damage down the road.
Todd Priest I was also told not to change transmission fluid by bmw. Don’t believe this. I changed the atf twice and the transmission shifts better and quicker. The fluid was worn out.
my 435i has oil in the coolant tank and a water pump code, no coolant in the engine, no coolant leak at all. also engine overheating message. wtf is going?
I bought my m235i 6 weeks ago, and a few days ago on my I drive there was a notification about a drivetrain issue and full power is not available, I turned the car off and on again it went away, I floored the car after it and it didn't come back up. The next day I was driving casually and the notification came up again :/
hella-flush that happened to me couple weeks ago and it was my charpe pipe that blew! Ive also heard that notification pops up here and there forgot the reason for it but if your car drives fine now you shouldnt be worried
Sounds like the issue could be caused by a potential boost leak since your car is going into limp mode. I would check the chargepipe and search for any cracks. Also check where it connects to the intercooler.
Yoo omar, now tell us about B58 reliability and longevity . Is it better than N55? I love BMW, but also love owning a long last engine without some major catastrophic issues, minimal 200k miles at Odometer before changing a new car.

@@SimplyCarThings I have the N55 engine and the w/p failed at 45k miles. AFIK, it is the same basic design as the N54. Heat and vibration kills the integrated electronics inside and these fail prematurely. That is probably why BMW moved back to mechanical design on the B58 engines.
C15 0001229684 did the radiator myself which was about £200/$210 in parts. @kniaugaudiskis I would say around 65k. I love the car and I know BMW requires more work than their peers but the sticker prices per repair is ridiculous.
My 2015 N55 is at 66k. I've had it for a little over a year now and it's been nothing but a dream to own. Daily driver / still stock and its never failed me. Obviously there can be freak accidents but for the most part, we own amazing cars. Reliability was a big concern for me and I know the paradox of looking for reliability and a BMW but really the N55 doesn't get enough credit. If I hit 100k then thats a W in my books.
Too bad Lexus fail at over 300k
that's so awesome to hear man, I couldn't agree more! they're truly awesome and super fun cars
@@jayden56858 Okay, I'll play. How many reports can you find of people successfully taking a modern (2012+) Lexus north to 300K miles before failing? What components, if any, needed to be replaced?
question bros:
My car (2015 335i M sport) had an issue yesterday when i was just cruising along the street and stop.. my car just literally died and error came on dash like "transmission error"kinda like that.. i did have a gas still like 25miles range before empty.. but after that i turned the car back on and it started and driving home really well and the car acted like nothing happened.. 🤦🏻♂️

Can you run an off the shelf tune from MHD and a JB4 at the same time?
Yes
Hey, how much does the aluminum charge pipe cost approximately?
valvetronic motor and eccentric shaft just went out on my 2013 3 series n55 got quoted 4 grand to fix at 63,000 miles. any idea how that went out?
4 grand to fix?? who did you go to? that's way overpriced
Simply Car Things some expensive dealership isn’t it 2grand in parts?
@@bengy082 I would look into an indy mechanic or DIY. The parts are $2k because that's what the dealership is quoting you but you can definitely get them for less. Id recommend looking for the parts at FCP Euro
Does anyone know where I can get the charge pipe replaced in Southern California Or any trustworthy mechanics
SSR Performance in Orange County California! Just tell them you were sent by Simply Car Things and they'll hook it up :)
Thanks Omar I plan on getting a m235i pretty soon gotta prepare Accordingly 😃😃😃
Would you recommend this for a daily ?
Oh definitely! Great platform to daily
i tought the M135i 2012 also had the N55 in it, m i right?
it does
yea it does
I will be buying a 2013 135i for 2015 435i Gran Coupe cash soon. I've heard the N55 has rod bearing issues, is that true?
in earlier model years i've heard of it happening but it seems to be rare
@@SimplyCarThings I appreciate the insight. I enjoy your channel. I've thought about just going B58 but a rear mounted timing chain is a bit troubling.
N55 owner here, this scrub even doesn't know a 535 or 640i have n55s. I own a 535i. Only common issue is leaking oil housing filter gasket. Also any N55 owner knows open box air filters run like shit
I got an M235 2016 with 16k on it. If I do an intake and exhaust to it, do I need to tune it too?. I don’t like to beat on my cars. however I do want to make it a little louder and more powerful without getting crazy. What do you recommend?.
you should always get a tune if you're performing mods that will affect the flow characteristics of a turbocharged vehicle. In some vehicles the extra air cannot be metered properly on the factory tune and this can cause engine damage down the road.
More n55 content !!!
coming right up!
I’ve heard of rod bearing issues on the n55 early models do u have any idea of which models and was there a soloution provided ?
later versions has better rod bearings and aren't an issue, 2014 and 2015 models cleared this up.
Very informative thanks for the facts bro
appreciate that a lot man, thank you!!
Great job on this video bro !
thanks brotha! appreciate it!
Transmission Oil flush/change does not hurt every 60k
100% agreed
I was told by bmw not to touch the trans.. ?
Todd Priest I was also told not to change transmission fluid by bmw. Don’t believe this. I changed the atf twice and the transmission shifts better and quicker. The fluid was worn out.
Dustin Stevens good to know. I wonder why there so big on saying no? With previous cars I did usually by 60-70k
@@dustinstevens9964 i've heard that as well, good stuff to know!
Did you ever pass the Corvette?
yes, i did
Ayy
my 435i has oil in the coolant tank and a water pump code, no coolant in the engine, no coolant leak at all. also engine overheating message. wtf is going?
thought it was a head gasket but engine looks clean
I bought my m235i 6 weeks ago, and a few days ago on my I drive there was a notification about a drivetrain issue and full power is not available, I turned the car off and on again it went away, I floored the car after it and it didn't come back up. The next day I was driving casually and the notification came up again :/
hella-flush that happened to me couple weeks ago and it was my charpe pipe that blew! Ive also heard that notification pops up here and there forgot the reason for it but if your car drives fine now you shouldnt be worried
Happened to me then I blew my turbo
Sounds like the issue could be caused by a potential boost leak since your car is going into limp mode. I would check the chargepipe and search for any cracks. Also check where it connects to the intercooler.
Yoo omar, now tell us about B58 reliability and longevity . Is it better than N55?
I love BMW, but also love owning a long last engine without some major catastrophic issues, minimal 200k miles at Odometer before changing a new car.
B58 is great engine. But its Not long enough in the Market to tell how good it really is. But for now it seems Very good
yep it's a fantastic engine so far but only time will tell about its long term durability
My cousin's one does 230wkw and 520nm.. been driving it like a mad man daily and the car still hasn't complained for over 2 years since the downpipe chargepipe and turn by budler motorsport
Bought 2014 335i at 57K Miles, before I hit current 62K miles. Coolant vent hose failed, coolant sprayed coolant allover. Dealer wanted $565 to fix. Ordered my OEM parts from different dealer and had friend do it. Then oil filter housing gasket, had oil dripping down to the belts and pulleys, warranty covered it.
Not a single dislike! Keep being the arrowhead for n55 content!
thanks man! will do!!
My 435 is stage 2 but I’m afraid to comment about its reliability lol I’m far away from the car so it won’t hear me but I don’t wanna jinx myself. It’s been a great car though
Great video. I suppose the way to look at it is, that engine couldn't have been too bad if they put it in the M2?
Were you been at
i've been making videos, but i think they stopped showing up in a lot of people's feeds smh
Wow you hit all 3 major issues with the N55.
i tried my best to be accurate haha
Don't forget about the rod bearings it's a time bomb for them to go out and knock knock who's there New engine. My rods went out at 68,000 miles and had to get a new engine. I highly suggest changing your rod bearings before 70,000 miles it's expensive but you won't have to worry for a loooooooooooooooooooong time.
Rod bearings on the N55? I haven't heard of that being a regular issue for many people tbh.
@@SimplyCarThings yeah man my rods went out it's a common issue with the f30 so if you are planning on putting more power to your car I highly suggest you upgrade your rod bearings.
@@SimplyCarThings Rods went out on my n55 aswell. My dealer said they've been seeing more and more coming in due to rod knock. Its certainly a issue
Let’s not forget the coolant vent/return hose that likes to break off and spill coolant all over the engine bay😕
sounds sketchy who do u bring ur car to?
When you get a bmw and you can't afford the gym membership anymore.
Lmao
IMHO, the most common issue is the water pump. Charge pump yes but if not overboosted stock one usually lasts for a while.
yea that's a good point, on the newer F-Series cars the water pump issue seems to be fixed however
@@SimplyCarThings I have the N55 engine and the w/p failed at 45k miles. AFIK, it is the same basic design as the N54. Heat and vibration kills the integrated electronics inside and these fail prematurely. That is probably why BMW moved back to mechanical design on the B58 engines.
My 335 after one months ownership needed all gaskets, radiator and water hoses changed lol
How much did that run you?
C15 0001229684 did the radiator myself which was about £200/$210 in parts. To do the gaskets and water hoses the car had to go on a lift and luckily I had a friend who owns a garage so including parts and labour that cost me £600/$700 as the engine was pulled out to clean all the oil leaked everywhere.
@@amilasath9004 oof; I dont have any friends who like cars, let alone own a lift LOL

Amila sath how many miles did your 335 have?
Awesome video man. You are easy to listen to as well

Does the m2 have these issues as well?
yea i'd say the M2 would have these issues as well.

My N55 EWG wastegate failed in warranty at about 35k miles.
The most common issue is that its not a master race n54!!! :D
Ive had my 2011 bmw 535i xdrive for about 80k...still havent changed any gaskets lol thank god knock on wood
At 145k now
Still no issues?
Michelle over heated bc the water pump failed and it put itself into limp mode so it wouldent damage the engine. i am now stage 2+ and a E85 mix program. i spun a rod bearing and it made a rod knock. i had factory rod bearings. i get the car back in 2 days so i’ll see how it drives. i’ve never had a single problem with the car since i got it at like 60k miles. only the water pump. it is recommended to change the oil filter housing gaskets to avoid oil leaking into the belt and making the belt slip causing the engine to eat the belt.
@@danteecheverry8968 thank you, do you think I'll be able to pull 200k miles out of a lci 535i with around 40k miles on it if I do 0 mods on it except change the filter housing gaskets, oil pan gasket, charge pipe, valve cover gasket, rear differential gasket, engine oil change every 6-7 miles and transmission oil change every 40-50 thousand miles and possibly a valve cleaning job due to direct injection carbon build up at around 100 thousand miles? Thank you if you take your time to respond
Michelle where are you buying the car from? an what year is it? if you want ur engine to not end up like mine i suggest you to change ur oil every 3k to 4k miles and always monitor ur oil level, because the main thing that ruins the engine is insufficient oil and old oil that wasn’t changed quick enough. other then that as long as you maintain the car and change the gaskets, if you preventively maitain the car it will treat you well if you if u treat the car well. you can easily surpass 200k especially if u drive it normal. these engines are infamous for “spinning rod bearings” even at 35 40k miles stock engines no mods. i had a freind that spun a bearing at 35k miles no modz. if you want the engine to last change the rod bearings as soon as you buy the car. if you have any questions about the car let me know. i’ve done a lot of reasearch about these cars.

Bought an M235i last week with 22k miles. Pulled out of the dealership and the charge pipe busted. Luckily under warranty.
Was it previously tuned?
@@GrimJaw I dont think so, but I cannot tell. I would assume this particular dealership would have fixed it before selling, but with all the tunes available, i dont know how to tell.
Alan Sosebee if I were you I’d replace the plastic charge pipe with a metal one they are not expensive! The charge pipe doesn’t usually bust unless the car has been modded and pushed hard. Best of luck going forward!
