Given how much better the 16gb M3 performs than the 8gb M3 in real world tests, it would be great to have a video comparing the 16 gb M3 to the 16 gb M2.
I've used a quad-core Intel MBP for the past 4 years, and I just purchased the base level M3 MBP ($200 off on Amazon). I upgraded the base level to 16 gb and 1 TB SSD. I love it.
The system alone already takes about 5GB of RAM (excluding cached files), and browsing requires at least 3GB of RAM. Swap is unavoidable and I'm afraid if my 8GB M1 MacBook Air breaks one day, and fortunately, it has been over 2 years I used it and it's still fine I know how Apple handles RAM, it uses the entirety of the RAM (this includes cache) for speed, but the system usage alone (without other apps) is much bigger than other OSes
I think they should put a tag on each of those laptops because sometimes it can be very confusing. I know they have different colors, but going back and forth all the time I can sometimes get confused.
Saved forever to get an M2 (My first ever apple computer). My friend started bragging about the new m3 they got and I had to look up a video to see how “obsolete” things would get after one gen passed. But man looks like I really lucked out. Im just really happy we both seemed to get laptops that work pretty well at the end of the day
For Blender, you are running out of ram on the 8GB when using GPU with the party tug scene. If you were to use a higher ram config version of the m3, using cycles and that same scene, you would see a MASSIVE jump using the RTCore option in the system settings. The new M3 (base/pro/max) RT Cores + Blender are no joke, and go beyond simple pre-packaged benchmark apps.
To be fair, none of these machines should ever offer less than 16GB of RAM as the lowest config in 2023 so I don't feel bad about it. This is still a like for like comparison at the same price.
I would have said M1 Pro vs. M2 Pro vs. M3 Pro also M2 Max vs. M3 Max. But overall the performance gains are overhyped , usually the interactive part of work will dominate nearly everything the faster machines will deliver, and yes the human factor shouldn't be underestimated , otherwise ALL the work could be done by monkeys. And if the interactive work is just monkeywork why to bother with any accelarations. How much more productive is trhe Human if his computer is 30% faster, the answer is usually the produvitiy gains are somewhere between Nil and Zero.
One reason for the M1 vs M3 is that is what APPLE did at the launch presentation (and having an M1 myself I'd like to see how honest they were). Probably because as these tests showed the M2 vs M3 wasn't a big difference, and anyone upgrading would be Intel or maybe M1.
I think what could be interesting for many potential buyers is comparing the M1 Pro with this base M3 chip. It seems that the M3 could be up to the performance of the M1 Pro, or even better in some cases!
I think we need to see an M2 Pro vs M3 Pro to see how the new architecture and the redistribution of the CPU and GPU cores are affecting real-world performance. How much of a real improvement do we have on the Pro chips. Because yes, we know that the Base model and the Max have improved well... but has the Pro? Do I buy a M2 Pro for less price or go for the M3 Pro for the original price?
I would like to see that same video comparison. The M3 pro chip vs M2 pro chip. But so far on the videos and articles I found, seems like the M3 pro chip was not upgraded as much as it could have.I just go my hands on the M3 pro. But I am thinking about returning it and getting the M2 pro. $400 cheaper and about 95%+ same performance. Im just hooked on the new space black color haha.
ah very interesting. honestly I am really annoyed by the fact, that you could have bought a relatively expensive and powerful machine in this february (m2 pro) and now you don't have the most recent version anymore already. I think this is really to fast and they should even compensate people. haha, but I know that's naive and magical thinking. but yeah. since most people would go for the pro configuration because it's the middle ground of performance and price I'd like to see a direct comparison here. and yes, I am a sucker for the space black as well! :-) @@ezequielmuniz3376

it'd be great to add a Lightroom CC test with AI-masks. Compared to traditional edits and processing, this is one area where I suspect there could be great performance-differences between GPU-cores and processor generations. It's trivial to add sclera recognition and other very specific masks that previously weren't possible, and it is the norm now. Applying them to 200+ photos for event / wedding / portrait-photographers is a common task and I am very curious how the M3s compare to previous generations.
HEY!!! just wanted to point out that you mentioned in the Lightroom test the M2 was faster than the M3 but the graph labels were switched. Was not sure if you noticed that. Also sorry for not subscribing earlier. I thought I did and I watch your apple review videos all time before making a purchase. Keep up the good work!!!
That's interesting that you managed to get around 490 for the Speedometer 2.0 benchmark on both systems. I only managed to get about 420 on my unbinned M2 Pro running in Safari, I wonder what's causing the discrepancy. Edit: Turns out I was using Speedometer 2.0 instead of 2.1. Got 473 in Chromium on Speedometer 2.1
you forget another reason to buy the M3 one. i personally dont care about the extra slight performace of the m2 pro over m3 base, but i would take the huge extra battery life any day, while keeping the same case/screen/formula, etc. then i'd get the mac mini with the m3 pro when it comes out, to use in the office, and keep this base m3 mbp 14 as a macbook air replacement (i think it canibalizes the air in my opinion). i currently have am M1 pro MBP 14 inch base (8 core), and i think i will replace it with this M3 base for on the go + the mac mini M3 pro for the office
I have bought the base m3 just to try it out. It's actually my first Mac. I just use it for some light photo editing, and school work at uni. It works fine compared too my old Windows laptop. Which was a intel gen 11
I made the switch from windows as well. I'm really happy having made the switch. Only downside is some of the productivity short keys aren't available on the Mac. But the build and battery life is great even compared to my surface book 2.
This video was confusing to differentiate when you were talking about the M3 vs M2 Pro. The lightroom benchmark also seemed inverted. When showing the laptops and screenshots of the benchmark tests it would be helpful to label them on screen, and also reduce referring to "this one" and "that one" in the script. Just my two cents, appreciate the thorough content.
In terms of the speaker comparison, I did notice that the M3 MacBook Pro does sound a bit more detailed and cleaner than the M2 MacBook Pro. But I'm sure most people wouldn't notice the difference.
Awesome video! I decided to buy a refurbished base M2 Pro MacBook Pro for $1599 a last week rather than pre-order the base M3 MacBook Pro and this reaffirms that I probably made the right choice.
After all the good videos you guys make... I am beyond disappointed to see the NOOB mistake of comparing hardware by ADDING ANOTHER VARIABLE when using different versions of the OS?? How blatantly flawed can you get? At 05:03 we clearly see MacOS 13.5 VS 14.1... Do you not know after aaaaaall your testings thst different OS are tweaked differently, literally making your results LIMITED TO ONLY THIS SETUP. PERIOD. IF you want your result to be worth anything, IDENTICAL versions of the OS is the least you can ensure. Very very amateurish mistake right there guys. Remake the video ASAP and pay attention next time.
watching this video after buying an open box 14" M2 pro 16gb ram 12 core CPU 19 core GPU with 1 TB storage for $1400 from Best Buy. couldn't be any happier! almost pulled the trigger on a 14" mbp base M3 or 15" mba base M3. I can sleep very well tonight
Maybe you should not blow the hot air of one macbook into the other ones by placing them so tight together. the air outlets and intakes are on the sides.
@@chezchezchezchez the M2 macbook pro 13 with the oudated design has been tested to have shitty thermals even tho it has a fan and the air doesnt but the air like has better thermals
Even Apple didn't dare to compare the M2 to the M3 because there's practically not much difference. I have an M1 Pro, and for my workflow, I'm going to wait until the M5 to make the switch.
As insightful as this all is, as others have said it's a very specific use case that doesn't account for the difference in ram.... Given people would likely want at least 16gb ram, I think a M3 16gb vs M2 Pro 16gb comparison would be much more insightful, particularly in helping decide between the newer M3 or discounted M2 Pro
Agreed that 8 Gb isn’t enough for somebody who is making real money with their computer. But it is ok for some people who do occasional pro things. I fit into that last category, still upset about the cost to upgrade to 16Gb. I haven’t upgraded yet because of that.
The M2 Pro's Cinebench 2024 result are so all over the place, you can find results online that can range from the low 700s to 851 (highest I can find), there were probably some tweaks to the fan curve or power budget included in the various macOS updates.
My question is the number of fans in the cooling system for the MacBook Pro models with the M3 pro and M3 Max chip, is it also only 1, or is it something that only occurs in the M3 chip?
The one fan _should_ only be for the m3 base model, not the pro/max chips. Not much different than last gen with the m2 13inch mbp and the m2pro/max 14in mbp. The only difference is they purposely made a different shell for a “lesser” 14in mbp. It worked the exact same way with the old 13in mbps with 4 thunderbolt ports vs 2tb ports. The 2 port model had one fan vs the 4port model with 2 fans.
66 FPS is still poor. My old RTX 3060 Max Q GPU laptop gets 82FPS and it's not the lasest generation of graphics and was an 800 laptop. CPU is slow, but not needed for gaming focused tasks.
PLEASE repeat this comparison this year with the M3 Pro 11 core vs M4 10 core chip when the laptop comes out. Both should be around the same price, hopefully around $1599, it would be great to know which makes more sense for each workflow. 🙏
Hi MAX. Would it be possible to include in Lightroom section test of Denoise function (lets say for 10 images)? In my opinion it is the one of the most demanding feature in LR right now. On top of it. It would be good measure for comparison. Thanks!
The time it takes to render a video is not the most important thing when working. You would check the time needed for stabilization or denoising in FCP
Why are you doing the test with two different operating systems? 13 vs 14 as shown between minute 4 and 5. In addition the better bandwidth of 4 slots for ssd is related to the bigger processor eg max und not just a bigger ssd. At least according to apple website...
I got the brand new M3 MacBook Pro 16GB Ram / 512GB Hard Drive for $1499 last month. This Month, Micro Center offer M2 Pro MacBook Pro 16GM Ram/512GB Hard Drive only $1549. I missed the deal of M2 Pro, but 16GB Ram on M3 MacBook Pro is good enough for me.
I don't understand why you guys kept saying all along that the old M2 Pro could be upgraded in any way. They are no longer available. If you need anything special in terms of configs, you either find an used one or try to find one from 3rd party sellers. Most likely any still available are going to be the stock config. I'm curious to see the binned M3 Pro against the binned M2 Pro. It will be fun.
Great test. From what I've seen is that Lightroom but also Davinci Resolve needs to be updated since these two run faster on the M1 Max than they do on the M3 Max.
The fact that these videos exist show that it is bad to buy a product for this amount of money that can’t be upgraded. This is why I won’t ever buy one of these and why my iPad Pro will be the last Apple product I will ever buy; I had the hope that it would be able to run true professional development software, but it can only be used as a dumb terminal in a remote configuration for anything more complicated than scripting languages.
If you guys wish to see the real GPU difference of M3/M3PRO/M3MAX I suggest you use the benchmark Gravity Mark GPU Benchmark This bench uses the ray tracing and the new mesh shaders of Apple Silicon M3 GPUs. With this bench you finally see how fast the new GPUs are comparing to previous generation. I don't think that current GFX bench are meaningful to be honest.

16:52. There is a mistake in the graph. it took 1:47 min on M3 and not M2 Pro.
Idk how they're going to cram that M3 in an iPad. Thermals seem to be even worse than M2.
HEY!!! just wanted to point out that you mentioned in the Lightroom test the M2 was faster than the M3 but the graph labels were switched. Was not sure if you noticed that. Also sorry for not subscribing earlier. I thought I did and I watch your apple review videos all time before making a purchase. Keep up the good work!!!
The bar graph of 63 seconds vs 107 is actually inverted.
M1 Pro vs M3 (not the pro version)
Ueah we need this comparison
That's interesting that you managed to get around 490 for the Speedometer 2.0 benchmark on both systems. I only managed to get about 420 on my unbinned M2 Pro running in Safari, I wonder what's causing the discrepancy.
Edit: Turns out I was using Speedometer 2.0 instead of 2.1. Got 473 in Chromium on Speedometer 2.1
I got 380 on my M1 pro in Chrome on Speedometer 2.1
Got 447 on my M1 Air in Safari Speedometer 2.1.
What was battery life like? I feel like that could be a big reason why people choose the M3
Apple actually binned the M3 battery by about 300mah to not exceed the m3 Pro and max
The max has had pretty poor battery life in the past.
you forget another reason to buy the M3 one. i personally dont care about the extra slight performace of the m2 pro over m3 base, but i would take the huge extra battery life any day, while keeping the same case/screen/formula, etc. then i'd get the mac mini with the m3 pro when it comes out, to use in the office, and keep this base m3 mbp 14 as a macbook air replacement (i think it canibalizes the air in my opinion). i currently have am M1 pro MBP 14 inch base (8 core), and i think i will replace it with this M3 base for on the go + the mac mini M3 pro for the office
You should have also compared the battery life. M3 MBP is quoted at 22 hours vs. 18 hours on the pro models
Battery life is a very important aspect of a mobile workstation (aka laptop). Often ignored by performance junkies.
I see the extra 4 hours of battery as me having to charge the laptop less often. And that is valuable to me!
$1599 in US dollars?
@@storytimereadaloud805 yes
Your browser bench score seemed wrong for the M3 because my M3 iMac scored 546 which seemingly fits with how much more single score performance is...
Exactly right Sir. The M3 is a wonderful machine but those of us with an M2 Pro Macbook should sit tight for a while.
Keep up the good work! 🙂
Did anyone make a comparision of M2 Max 14 inch vs M3 Max 14 inch?
watching this video after buying an open box 14" M2 pro 16gb ram 12 core CPU 19 core GPU with 1 TB storage for $1400 from Best Buy. couldn't be any happier! almost pulled the trigger on a 14" mbp base M3 or 15" mba base M3. I can sleep very well tonight
Good.
Maybe you should not blow the hot air of one macbook into the other ones by placing them so tight together. the air outlets and intakes are on the sides.
The brightness is just a software lock.
Especially if you can get it at or below $1000 on second hand.
I question the fact the computers are sitting right next to each other for thermals. Was that how it was during the test?
Me too because that could effect the accuracy of the test
There’s a wrong information in 16:55
The big disadvantage of the M3 is the thermals have been found to run too hot even with a fan, the m2’s have been running cooler
@@chezchezchezchez the M2 macbook pro 13 with the oudated design has been tested to have shitty thermals even tho it has a fan and the air doesnt but the air like has better thermals
I'd love to see a comparison between M3 vs M1 Max.
I am sticking with my M2 14 MBP. I will check back again when M4 ships.
Even Apple didn't dare to compare the M2 to the M3 because there's practically not much difference. I have an M1 Pro, and for my workflow, I'm going to wait until the M5 to make the switch.
@@carlosap78 you just reminded me to wait for an odd number.
@@carlosap78M1 Pro owner here also. M4 should be double in raw performance over an M1.
I’ll also wait for an M5 then. 😂
108 degrees within minutes running Cinebench is like the Intel era all over again. Even throttling. Just throw in the second fan for 1699 Apple.
Apple needs to rename the M pro chips to M plus because it confuses people since model of the macbook is already called pro.
I just wanna see some souped up m3 max MBP’s against the souped up M1 max!
If i ever bought a new MacBook, first thing ill do is put a fan curve to keep it under 70c.
I would love to see a test M3 vs M1(the original 2020)
These are getting out of control on price yes they are good but not 2400$ good. Apple needs chill out. Im just going to stay with my m1pro
Bro retired from being the cover of subway surfers to doing apple reviews
Agreed that 8 Gb isn’t enough for somebody who is making real money with their computer. But it is ok for some people who do occasional pro things. I fit into that last category, still upset about the cost to upgrade to 16Gb. I haven’t upgraded yet because of that.
Yup, I have a 16gb M1 Pro and it’s not enough ram for me at times. Prices for higher ram specs are eye watering
At the price it's being sold there shouldn't be a 8gb model
I would like to see the binned M3 Pro vs binned M2 Pro and vs M1 Pro
Please compare macbook 14 M1 pro vs Macbook m3.. should i upgrade from m1 pro to base m3
I just recently got the m2 pro without knowing the m3 was coming out so soon. Glade I got it now. 😅
YES! Exactly the comparison I was looking for!!!
I don't want to spend a lot and want to buy a macbook. Can you please specify ideal configuration with model for music creation ?
Macbook Pro 16.
I've been waiting for this comparison. Thank you so much for this video!
Max, Vadim! Super video! Please, don't forget about musicians! Logic Pro X benchmark very interesting to see! Tnks guys!
Your graphics are wrong you had the times swapped 16:56
Thank you for the Browser Benchmark. Only available on this channel
The M2 Pro's Cinebench 2024 result are so all over the place, you can find results online that can range from the low 700s to 851 (highest I can find), there were probably some tweaks to the fan curve or power budget included in the various macOS updates.
What a pity that there is no logic pro test anymore... any reason why it has been canceled?
Great video! Can you guys do some test for music applications (logic, ableton) as well?
Do the top models of MacBook Pro M3 and Max M3 have 2 fans? Or the 16" models? Does anyone know how to answer? Thank you so much
Please compare M1 models to M3 models!!!
@@Alex-vp4ky thank you 🙂, MMM that "should" Is there a channel or website where it can be verified? Thanks for your time
How about M1 Pro 14 vs base M3 14??
thorough! eagering to see the comparison with the 16gb ram base m3 model
66 FPS is still poor. My old RTX 3060 Max Q GPU laptop gets 82FPS and it's not the lasest generation of graphics and was an 800 laptop. CPU is slow, but not needed for gaming focused tasks.
Not too surprising though
PLEASE repeat this comparison this year with the M3 Pro 11 core vs M4 10 core chip when the laptop comes out. Both should be around the same price, hopefully around $1599, it would be great to know which makes more sense for each workflow. 🙏
Now we just need to see the M3 pro model vs the M2 pro model for the real comparison.
Great video guys!:)
Thank you! Was a long video for sure!
Hi MAX. Would it be possible to include in Lightroom section test of Denoise function (lets say for 10 images)? In my opinion it is the one of the most demanding feature in LR right now. On top of it. It would be good measure for comparison. Thanks!
He's Vadim, not Max. xD
Yeah. I was referring to the name of the channel.@@tha_realness
Have to compare M3 with 16GB Ram vs M2 Pro also with 16GB Ram to see if there is improvement.
The time it takes to render a video is not the most important thing when working. You would check the time needed for stabilization or denoising in FCP
Getting rid of ports.... so stupid, frustrating, etc. What is Apple's problem with constantly getting rid of good options.
16:52 the graph is swapped showing incorrect numbers
Why are you doing the test with two different operating systems? 13 vs 14 as shown between minute 4 and 5. In addition the better bandwidth of 4 slots for ssd is related to the bigger processor eg max und not just a bigger ssd. At least according to apple website...
16:54 You mislabeled the graph.
About to be 70 different RUclipsrs with the same title
Great test.
From what I've seen is that Lightroom but also Davinci Resolve needs to be updated since these two run faster on the M1 Max than they do on the M3 Max.
Is this the base M3 or the M3 Pro?
Apple should have kept the Pro and Max chips for the Macbook Pro. This new setup confuses the lineup.
well that 3500$ helmet is coming w a m2 chip next year
HELL YEAH! That's the comparison that i wanted!
Apple ditching Intel for running too hot. Apple: Imma do it with myself
I am a graphic design college student I do plan on getting the refurbish MacBook Pro m2 14 in It’s has the specs I need so for 150 less than the new one.
Been waiting all day for this!!
