Just more proof that we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. Mr. Solvoll looks like he could be a member of the Hell’s Angels, someone who would just as soon punch you out as look at you. But then, he plays a sensitive, beautiful guitar introduction to this wonderful song. And when he starts to sing, my jaw drops. Rather than an expected gruff, raspy sound, this beautiful, mellifluous, gentle tenor voice comes out. To me, his is the definitive interpretation of this song. Thank you, Mr. Solvoll, for this beautiful musical offering.
Still here hahaha.... I just love the fact that 'someone' can sit on a park bench, and play something nice like this, without being "John Denver".... Kudos my friend!!! xoxox
I was honored to graduate with Steve Gillette from Whittier H.S. in Calif. in 1960. At our 50th high reunion, Steve introduced me to his sister, Darcy, after whom Steve wrote the song. She is a very lovely lady, and Steve has not changed with his fame in the music field over the years; he is still the laid-back person he has always been. He has never let his extensive and superb music ability surpass his gentle qualities. I first heard Darcy Farrow on a John Denver album, and later bought the video of his last concert honoring Wildlife Conservation in 1995 just prrior to his untimely death.
Dear Mr. Smoot…thank you for sharing your insights about this beautiful song. I had heard it years ago, and thought that it was a long-time staple of the folk repertoire, perhaps even written in the late 1800’s. I believe I thought that because of the setting (the “pony,” the “Truckee,” and best of all, a young lady being “courted.” (I think this was the last time I heard that word used…in this context, at least.). As you graciously point out, it is of a far more recent vintage. So thank you for enlightening me. Yours is a distinctive and somewhat uncommon family name. I believe there was a Senator (from Tennessee, I think) of that name. And when I lived in DC (in the mid-80’s) there was a wonderful gentleman, Brawner Smoot, who worked in a mens’ shop and assisted me in selecting appropriate attire for my work as an attorney. So your name (and your thoughtful post) have only pleasant associations for me. Sending good thoughts your way. Kindest wishes…JET
Oh my god!! I'm never tired to hear you singin ' and playing your fine martin guitar. You are very talented. Keep go that way. You give me thrills. Thank's.
Absolutely magnificent! Your's is the very best rendition of this favorite ballad I've ever heard only second to John Denver's. Thanks for keeping both the music and his spirit alive!
I have watched this many several times and really enjoyed his picking. I play travis also.As I was watching him,it hit me that he is playing exactly like Travis, thumb and one finger. Excellent my friend. I use thumb and 2 fingers. Doc also played with thumb and I finger
i first had the pleasure to hear Steve Gillette perform at Long Beach State in 1969 (memory a little foggy) I was just learning to finger pick, what a blessing to have stumbled into that performance that day. Thank you sir for your delightful rendition.
so nice..my oldest brother recently passed away..hè was a guitarist and brought his guitar a lot on familie partijen to enjoy us!appropriate that cemetry..thanks..it moves me!you can never underestimate what importnce it is to have a brother with a guitar!
Wow..Interesting intro pick & melody that pulls one into a lay-back mood, with lyrics that brings back similar memories and reminds my old heart about a young love, lost, long ago,,1969... Must share with present love ones..as I guess we just have to move on,, and not dwell too much on the heartaches..thanx for the song & hopefully gets added to a cd soon !
Mate, you played that so beautifully! I can’t thank you enough! Helped me to get my own guitar playing of that song up to scratch. Cheers from Australia.
I'm 11 years late but I'll add my "Bravo". Excellent version. Lots of mention of John Denver's version in the comments but, for me, the 1963 (or 64) version recorded by Ian and Sylvia remains at or near the top of the list.
Wow. I'm a guitarist, and my prior introduction to this song/playing was by the late & great John Denver. I knew he didn't write it, but this is a beautiful rendition!!!
Just discovering this 4 years after you posted it, but LOVE your version of it. Love the chord transitions, your Travis/Cotten picking, your lovely Martin guitar, & even your singing! I play it similarly, but not as well. Nicely done.
You my good guitar player singer , do what you do so very well ! Guitar Vocal & Heart all blended as one , thanks for this convincing and moving love ballad , not many are able to pull this off ! My hat is off to you ! J D would be proud !
One od John Denvers songs I always stopped to listen. Hence, seeing you come into my feed. I stopped to listen to one of my favorite songs/ballet. You did the song proud.

This might be the best cover for me... a real talent brother.
The real Darcy Farrow, Steve Gillette's sister, lives the next town over from me!
WONDERFUL! :)
Just came across this version of "Darcy Farrow", simply wonderful, thank you
This is such a lovely song...one of my very favorites. You have the voice of a thrush! PLEASE...don't stop singing :)
The very best version of this song. You have figured out a way to play the intro lick without that crazy stretch. Can't stop watching this video.
Very beautiful playing & singing. Inspiring.

Awesome rendition of one of my favorite songs....
So moving, so guileless, utter simplicity!
Wonderfull song, very good performed.
This is a beautiful rendition of a very lovely song. One that I sang in college more than 40 years ago. Well done.
One od John Denvers songs I always stopped to listen. Hence, seeing you come into my feed. I stopped to listen to one of my favorite songs/ballet. You did the song proud.

Your vibrato is very similar to Denver’s

Just as nice as John Denver. Your voice is so different, gives it a nice m delicate feel .
Absolutely beautiful!! Well done
