    love the video, havent been up goler canyon since early 2000. sucks to see barker ranch burned down, stayed there many times. also sucks to see someone took the sign and bull head off russells cabin, glad to see its still there. cant believe its been 20 years since ive been up there. gonna have to make a trip again, so much fun.

    No we went there in the 70s not to long after he was arrested and the roads actually looked worse. We always wondered how the heck he drove that bus up there.

    We went up to the start if Goler wash in a 4x4 Acura SUV but realized we most likely couldnt make it to Barker w/o tearing the oil pan. Have to go back in a proper high clearance vehicle.

    Really enjoyed your video. I’m planning this trip and was wondering exactly how bad Mangel pass was.

    • @lvfire68
      @lvfire68  3 года назад +2

      The part of my video where you could hear me scraping bottom (on the skid plate) is the worst part of the road and if you are coming down it's easier than going up. High clearance 4 wheel drive is a necessity and your skill level is also a big factor but careful line choice and maybe some rock stacking should get you through it. Have fun!

      Thanks. I’m in a decent built Tacoma. We definitely heading up here. I’ve wanted to see Barker and that bus for over 30 years after reading Helter Skelter. Death Valley is way interesting coming from the PNW. I’ve been a few times but only the main parts. This looks like a fun one.

    That is Emmitt Harder's cabin. Years ago we cleaned up the bus and covered the windows for a bunk house. Obviously some ass wipes trashed the bus thinking its Charley's (its NOT!). Bummer, that tree was huge, lots of shade. Sad. Looks like numbskulls burned the damn tree down! Nothing is scared!

    • @lvfire68
      @lvfire68  3 года назад

      I don't think anyone burned that tree, it didn't look burned anyway. I agree it is sad to see what vandals do to things out in the back country. Thanks for the history of that cabin, I had never heard of whose it was.

    • @lvfire68

      I suppose you could do it in one day if you just keep moving and don't stop to explore much. There are some pretty rough spots in the road and those require a little slower approach but part of the fun for us is exploring the sights along the way. Thanks for watching!

    Baker Ranch is more damaged than just a fire. The way I heard it was after the fire it was intentionally broken down as it had become too much of an attraction for people who lived there off and on.

      THERE MAY HAVE BEEN MORE VANDALS BUT THE PART ABOUT BEING TORN DOWN BECAUSE OF THE PEOPLE THAT LIVE THERE ON AND OFF .DON'T FLY IT'S IN Death Valley National Park ~~

      @@RimfireRat Your probably right. I cannot think of any reason the Park Service would want to discourage camping at the Barker Ranch. RUclips Wonderhussy "Barker Ranch and cabins of Goler Canyon"has a great video on the trip to Barker Ranch. At the end is a good comparison of the ranch before the fire and after with many of the walls collapsed. Wonderhussy also has an excellent video on the German Family that disappeared in Death Valley and their fate. "Retracing the Final Steps of the Death Valley Germans.

    What type of hitch do you use for your trailer?

    • @lvfire68
      @lvfire68  3 года назад

      I have been using a standard 2" ball hitch for all of our adventures but I also have a pintle hitch I can use for extreme articulation. I plan on upgrading the hitch soon but haven't decided which one to get yet.

    • @dianaauerhammer5681
      @dianaauerhammer5681 3 года назад

      @@lvfire68 Thank you! Have you ever had problems with your ball hitch on the rough terrain? We are pondering upgrading, too. One reason is the articulating hitch would make it harder for someone to steal the trailer when we are off in the car exploring.

    • @lvfire68
      @lvfire68  3 года назад

      @@dianaauerhammer5681 As a matter of fact I just ordered an articulating hitch from a company called Lock N Roll at locknroll.com We have never had any problems with the ball hitch but there were a couple of places we couldn't pull the trailer because of the extreme angles and I was too lazy to change to the pintle hook. As for security, I use locking hitch pins to make it very difficult for anyone to steal anything and since we usually camp alone in remote places we rarely even see anyone.

    I do not think my Ford Edge would go up there.

    • @lvfire68
      @lvfire68  2 года назад

      High clearance and good off road tires are the most important thing on this road to the Barker Ranch coming up from Panamint Valley. Going on over Mengle Pass requires a much more capable vehicle and I wouldn't recommend doing it in a Ford Edge.
