    I don't use tubs but I can definitely see benefits for humidity and the opaqueness making it feel more secure at the end of the day they're all just boxes as long as husbandry is met it doesn't really matter

    I never thought that I, a girl who has always been afraid of spiders, would eventually love them and find tarantulas cute! Looking forwards to hopefully keeping one in the future. Thank you for all the work you do and for encouraging me and others to look at "scary" animals with an open and thoughtful mind! :)

    I agree with you! Tarantulas absolutely do not give a crap what you keep them in; they are happy with their basic needs met. I enjoy having the super clear enclosure for mine because I have them on shelves and I can look at them without moving the enclosure.

    Hey Dayyan, thx buds for helping me with my arachnophobia. You and the Dark Den are giving me the knowledge I need to enjoy these guys more than be fearful. I appreciate that so much. Living in the Okanagan of BC, I’ve lived in basement suites that have been overrun with giant 1.5 -2 inch hunters and black widows so knowing more about spiders is helping prevent a heart attack lol
    I’m even starting to admit that your slings are actually cute to me lol

    Would suggest the catch cup method of transfer for the old worlds/teleporters! I learnt from Tom Moran.
    As for containers, as long as they're being cared for properly, then keep them in whatever you want! Personally I use tubs when they are growing, but I do like a fully clear container for adults.

    For enclosures, I prefer bioactive clear ones, so you can watch the animals. But when you have so many, it doesn't matter. As long they are good for the animals it's okay. Perhaps 1 or 2 in clear ones for our own amusement and the rest in plastic pots... they are well fed and look healthy and aren't agressieve, so they are okay... they don't mind. I think they feeling secure in there boxes.. ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

    Nice! I don't keep tarantulas and I am impressed with the lack of hair kicking.
    QOTD: I agree completely! As much as I like to see through the enclosures and I like natural looking setups, plastic is so much cheaper. Going to the dollar store for hides and water bowls (and enclosures for smaller species) saves so much money. When my cats broke the top of my kingsnakes enclosure I went to Walmart for a $20 storage tub with an airtight lid. Drilled holes and it is much bigger than a glass tank that would have cost much more. The humidity holding quality is a very nice aspect of plastic too.

  • @laurenczarniecki1993
    @laurenczarniecki1993 2 года назад

    I think that for your situation that cheep plastic tubs a great solution! You have many, many spiders that if you bought glass tanks for every single spider you have, long story short you’d be broke! For someone that has 1 or 2 tarantulas glass tanks would be a good way to display the beautiful invertebrate. I believe you are are not only considering your bank account and your well being for cheep and easy setups but also the animals! The inside of these enclosures are phenomenally decorated! You are a amazing pet owner. Keep going!

  • @user-teresastarantulas
    @user-teresastarantulas 2 месяца назад

    I definitely agree about glass enclosures. They are super heavy and have no side ventilation. I use the XL Critter Keepers from PetSmart. They are super clear. No handles so no holes there and they have ventilation with locking mechanisms on the sides. I have been buying them online for about $12 each. I have moved all of my larger T's in these.

    I would love to put my tarantulas in clear glass so I can enjoy watching them easier, but I think the plastic containers are better for the humidity, and for their sense of security, so plastic it is!

    For the encounter question, I see a lot of people with t's who have a giant collection with a lot of familiar/repeating species. That's well and good, but I've really only been interested to have like 3-4 species specifically. I think that a lot of the enclosure debate is a debate of necessity between keeping those with big collections a realistic shot at making their collections reasonable. I'm really drawn to some of the acrylic enclosures that I see at The Tarantula Collective, but I think it's because I only want a few T's that I think I'd want non-plastic tubs. However I will say that having the plastic enclosures is really helpful when you're raising the slings into adults because they're cheap and easy to collect and upgrade as the T grows.
    Plastic and glass e closures both have their uses:)

    You can go either way on the enclosures but glass aquariums should supplement humidity. I use a dedicated washcloth that tops the metal screen lid that's sprayed in the morning.
    On plastic enclosures... Cheese balls. get one of those huge plastic "cheese" ball containers because they're so easy to look through and look cool to boot. Use an anti adhesive to clear whatever residue is left by the label.

    I think it depends on the species and the individual tarantula. If you have a tarantula that is out of its hide/burrow most of the time then a nice glass enclosure is cool for viewing. But if you have a fossorial species that spends most of its time underground not much point in putting it in a big glass decorated enclosure. Most important thing is, the needs of the animal are covered.

    I think the key difference is people get confused with Preference VS. Requirement. For example, I personally prefer pvc/glass/clear plastic containers where I can visually see for my own personal enjoyment. However, that does not mean it is a requirement for the animal's health and well-being. It is more a cultural thing in my opinion. When you are at work and your boss says I prefer you to do it this way they aren't telling you" you have to do it that way" to get the goal completed they are telling you that's how they would like you to do it. It is one of those overlapping grey areas that is just part of our culture and everyday lives so we get those interchanged just out of habit with no ill intent or even thinking about it.

    I only have one semi adult and 2 slings so I like display enclosures for my own pleasure, but for people with very large amount, there's nothing wrong with plastic bins as long as long as they are the proper size. Spiders couldn't care less as they are not keen on being disturbed anyways. Also, I just watched Bethany's Spiders (check out her channel 😊) and she just got a M robustum. I definitely want one now. While I love the idea of crystal clear acrylic/glass enclosures they tend to become very expensive for larger collections. At the end of the day, what is important is the animal’s health and plastic Tupperware containers do really well for moisture dependent species. I don’t have a large collection of inverts compared to many keepers, but my thought is while they are growing to keep them in the cheaper plastic bins, and when they get to be adults maybe keep a few species on display in the nicer clear glass/acrylic enclosures as long as they thrive in the setup.

    Clear cages means more visibility, which is great for us but not necessarily great for a spider who has great eyesight and is more of a hiding species. Part of why your are so well behaved I believe is because of their housing. I would have to agree with you on their comfort level especially when you notice their reluctance to leave or move from their enclosure.

I know Dave (Dave’s Beasties) and Bethany (Bethany’s Spiders) both talk about their secure spiders hanging out visible every evening (so long as it’s not say, a trapdoor species). Makes me wonder: if that’s their experience, does it suggest that the hobby may be repeating truisms that developed when people didn’t know the best ways to care for their animal, and now that’s repeated because it’s what people know vs what’s accurate?
      It kind of reminds me if hamsters. When I was a kid, it was okay to keep hamsters in these small 30cm enclosures, maaaybe with a really tiny wheel and a second level, some tubes for climbing. These days, that’s nigh on animal abuse-folks in the ham hobby now keep their animals in these beautiful DIY cages with deep digging boxes and separate food/run areas. (Size varies by species, but think of the bare minimum as 2800 square cm of unbroken floor space-so all one level-for the smallest hamster.) We did the best we could with what little we knew in those dark pre- internet days, but knowledge changed. And people were really resistant to that knowledge change, because well. It’s a pretty big size difference in cages!
      Sometimes, I wonder if the same thing is going on in person the invert space. 🤷🏼‍♀️ People are seeing different behavior based on different care, and so what we “knew” many not be what we “know” at all.
      If nothing else, you could try an experiment. 😉 See if you get Dave’s results if you replicate one of his enclosures?

    I keep the majority of my tarantulas in sterlite tubs, as well as my Goniurosaurus hainanensis. They don’t mind and I feel as though they like it more because of the reduced visibilty. I’ve also got to rehouse my juvenile 0.1 GBB. Worst urticating hairs I’ve ever received was actually when I pulled a molt from my T apophysis. Whew! She burned!

    Nice collection. My GBB likes to live in an arboreal set up but also bone dry. My T vagans is called Bilbo, he's such a good eater and one of my favs. My T violaceus is growing on nicely as well, heard they are amazing display species when older if plenty hiding spots available. My Kaeng krachan is loving called crackhead cause thats his energy and vibe haha! My OBT is actually a fairly chill sweetheart for all they have a scary rep but in saying that - never trust a 'calm' oldworld!!! LAMO. In regard to the tub vs glass enclosure question of the day - it really doesn't make a difference to the animal, as long as the requirements are met and they can burrow or web up they don't care. I use a mix of glass and plastic enclosures for my collection and out of 60 odd they are all happy :) Also I do all my rehousings in the bathroom in the bath with catch cups, tongs, paint brushes and the doors shut with towels at base of the door haha. Good job though very well done!

    I don’t keep invertebrates so what is the benefits of keeping them in a smaller enclosure and upgrading as they get larger? Could they start in a large container? And live their entire lives in it?

    I put wondering “who” in my tarantula enclosures lol. THEY are the easiest! I do my soil just as you but I don’t buy Creatures soil. I also keep sand and….pretty much every substrate material ur heart desires. Pretty sure the tarantula soils are peat, sand and maybe topsoil.

    I just don’t see how you can appreciate viewing or enjoying watching them in their environment but it’s an affordable alternative I guess

    Do you save any of the old substrate?

      @Reptiliatus  2 года назад

      Yes all the time. Just be super careful with hairs. Personally if it’s a new world tarantula I don’t bother because you DO NOT want to forget and stick your hand in their soil!

    The old world rehousing seemed a little stressful. As for the question, I think that glass enclosures are the best for viewing, but they are heavier and cost more.
    Plastic ones can be stackable and save on space. Either way, if the conditions are appropriate inside, the tarantula will be okay. After all they are not exceptionally visual animals.

    One thing I’ve learned since getting my 2 Ball Python’s is that the number one thing they care about is security. Then food. Then temperature. (For some, those last two may switch). If you’re keeping your reptiles in an enclosure that is secure to them, the right humidity and they get food and water, they’re “happy”. The aesthetics are for us humans. 🕷

    Hey I have a question, so I have a 49 gallon tank (for my beardie) I am thinking of getting a reptile that won't need a bigger tank than 40 gallons (because I need to upgrade to a 100 gal when my beardies older) so I'm thinking maybe a tarantula would be a good pet for 40 gallons
    What are your thoughts??
    Also I would like to handle a trarantula time to time (I have actually got to hold one, a Mexican red knee) and I want to know which kinds are more easier to handle

    How can you tell when a tarantula is comfortable? How much space do they need? If they are comforted by the scent of their own web, would it help to put a piece of their webbing into the new enclosure before moving the animal? Am I asking too many questions? :)

    The fancy glass enclosures are for the humans enjoyment. As long as the husbandry is on point the spider could care less.

    The first tarantula you rehoused, you put them in a bin with no air holes, hopefully you caught that mistake 😅 love your videos though!
