    I’ve heard songs from King Jesus for 50 year’s. The most recent one had a drum sound in it. I’ve never played one of these, but am gonna try. I play strings.
    Singing with it will sure be a challenge, but I can Do all things through Christ, Who strengthens me!
    Thanks for the encouragement!!!
    Blessings

    Nice tone. I really like the slap note on that cajon.

      Thanks! Tone is so subjective, it's funny. I've been told that this cajon sound is terrible, and I've heard that people love it. I guess it's a polarizing sound. Glad you like it, and thanks for the encouragement!

    Dumb question maybe, but does each cajon player play the same song differently? I'm a beginner, but while trying to play along with you in this video, I hit my bass/snare drum mostly the same, but all the little notes in between, do you just play it how you think sounds good? Thanks for your help! Playing next week at church and want to understand better.

    • @ChurchMusicBoxPlayer
      @ChurchMusicBoxPlayer  2 года назад +4

      That's a great question! A lot of the time the subtle things are where players work in their own taste or style, for sure. With these videos, I mainly try to match the grooves that the original drums had in the song, more or less. Obviously it's not exactly the same when playing a cajon instead of a drum kit, but that's my goal and where I would recommend starting once the bass and snare notes are solid.

      I'm sorry this wasn't helpful for you; this was the best way I could figure out how teach songs how I think of them through a video. I hope you don't give up playing!

    What model cajon is this? How was it mic'd? Thanks sounds great..

    • @ChurchMusicBoxPlayer
      @ChurchMusicBoxPlayer  3 года назад

      Thanks! I don't think Meinl makes this model anymore- I've had this one for over a decade. It's an adjustable snare model with an ebony front plate, but only ones I'm seeing with ebony now are extra bass models. I'm planning on recording the next series of videos with a cajon from church, though, which will be a currently available model. I'm also planning on shooting a video walking through the sound, including tweaking the cajon setup, mic choice and placement, and signal processing.
      Honestly, I think a lot of people over-think mic'ing up a cajon. This is literally a Shure SM57 laid directly inside, sitting on the bottom of the cajon. No stand, no padding or muffling (though some cajons need just a touch, in my experience). That should get you a decent starting point. My 4-band parametric EQ and low-cut look like this:
      • Find the low fundamental frequency and boost it with a narrow band, cutting everything below it with the low cut
      • Use the next band up to find and reduce the loudest harmonic from the low hits- the combination of these two steps produces a clean low note.
      • I use the 3rd band to reduce some of the high-mid frequencies (between 600-1200 Hz), but this varies greatly from cajon to cajon.
      • The last band in EQ is used to boost the high frequencies where the attack of the "snare" slap happens.
      If I only have a 3 band eq, it's a toss up between steps 3 and 4, and I use whichever sounds best in the room.
      Other than that, there's some moderate compression (approximately 4:1-6:1 ratios) happening, and a gated reverb (which is admittedly probably a little more than I would use in a live context, but works alright here).
      Goodness, I typed a short novel. Hopefully this helps!

      @@ChurchMusicBoxPlayer excellent reply bud! I am what I like to call a fill in the gap musician, I play what ever the team needs at the time. Looking to expand my availability to more acoustic settings. Your sound is pretty much dead on what I'm wanting to get. I just bought the vertical subwoofer cajon, an was looking at tom/snare mic's to pair with it but I think your right the sm57 can do it all. I have a acoustic preamp that I think I can use to get close to the set up youve described here.. thanks a ton!
