  • Vince Gill got a rare opportunity recently when he was given the chance to play a guitar owned and often played by the late guitar wizard, Duane Allman. Gill was in Macon, Georgia, home of the Allman Brothers Band, on May 5, 2011 to do a benefit concert for the Alzheimer's Association of Georgia.
"I have chills running down my spine," said Gill as he showed off the instrument to the crowd. "This was the guitar that Duane Allman played with the Allman Brothers." The Country Music Hall of Fame member amped up the crowd's energy playing songs with extended guitar solos like his own hit, "Pretty Little Adrianna."
Like Allman himself, the guitar has had an amazing life. The 1957 Les Paul Gold Top Standard is the piece on which Allman actually recorded the rock classic "Layla" with Eric Clapton on the Derek And The Dominoes' immortal set, 1970's Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. Allman also played this guitar on the first two Allman Brothers Band albums.
Allman traded the guitar a mere week later, obviously with no inkling of the importance the instrument would have in the history of rock music. He died in a motorcycle wreck the following year. The guitar had been played in public at the band's annual March Beacon Theater run in NYC-by band members Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks-but this is the first time it was played in Macon, GA since Allman's death.
"It was a spiritual experience for me," said Gill, who was given the honor of playing the guitar by owner Scot Lamar and E.J. Devokaitis, Curator / Archivist at the Allman Brothers Band Museum at the Big House in Macon. "The moment that Vince first took a solo with the guitar was extremely emotional for the proud Maconites in attendance," commented Devokaitis. "There wasn't a dry eye in the building, and the combination of the guitar's tone and Vince's heartfelt playing transcended the concert...to me, it felt like Duane was speaking to us through Vince and his reverence - extremely special."

I have watched and listened to this video/recording of Vince for years by now...and this New Year (2024) I was finally moved to comment on 'it'.... And, I can't. This has moved me so deeply in the past, I sit and listened, 'mezermirized,' tearfully, by the excellence of Vince, and the spirit and soul of Duane. Nothing I can say would add to the heartfelt and soulful comments of the previous contributors.....except, "I concur...completely and totally." Magnificent music, 2 magnificent musicians...."Long live them both, Thank you."

As they say,...the tone is in the "hands" and Vince Gill has what is 'god given tone'. One of the best
guitarists the world has ever had.

It is a treasured moment in time for a person (musician) to have an opportunity to observe historic artifacts in person. To have the priveledge to hold and to handle artifact which are certified by an official board of Arts is a heartfelt moment in time. Vince Gill is a reliable and dependable musician, whom shown in this video-article, to have recieved the Honor of playing a 1957 Gibson Les Paul (that was once owned by Duane Allman); The 1957 Les Paul is certified artifact, registered by the Arts, and preserved under museum standards. The professionalism shown by Vince Gill, while handling the Les Paul is exemplar. Vince is LAUDED by the music industry and is recognized for his unique and creative application of guitar. As well Vince is well recognized for his song writing achievements and his vocalability to work music pitchings, phonics and pronounciations.

I had to leave early and didn't get to see much, but I came back Sunday with my Son. One of the best days of my life! I think my Son really enjoyed it too. He hadn't had much experience with the Allman Brother's music until the ride there and back. Now he's a new generation fan. The road goes on forever!

Vince is a great guitarist and talent. Duane, Gregg and the Brothers were simply the best in every since of the word. The Allman Brothers Band was just that, a band of brothers including their roadies and entourage. By luck my 1st album was Live at Fillmore East. I was 11 years old and hooked for life on the Brothers. I never saw my idol Duane play,
my loss but I have had the privilege to see the Brothers many times. GOD bless all the brothers .......

Fun fact: Duane traded this guitar for his cherry burst a marshall head, and $200. On the condition he could swap the gold tops pickups and put them in the cherry burst. The main part of the Layla was played on this guitar, and the ending(recorded 3 weeks later) was done on the 59' cherry burst with the 57's pickups.

Wonderful playing by Vince, he has such great tenderness in his touch when he plays, listen to that Les Paul sing! I wonder what kind of amp he is playing through, you know I don't think I've ever seen him play a Les Paul, he needs to record with it! Guitars are meant to be played, not just looked at, I know Duane would say the same thing.

Its hard to find an equal to Duane Allman's ability to make a guitar sound like he did. I would say his guitar was more than unique. Not to say Vince has a hard time getting around the guitar, just hear him struggling. Bet you wished you could struggle like Vince. Vince showed enormous respect to the guitar and the man who was a genius with it and acted with allot of class I would say. He nearly plays fabulous, huh.

Not sure that the original really required improvment - part of the charm was the phone video only taking up 1/3 of the screen - when the sound was what matters most and the unmistakable tone of that guitar transcends everything right or wrong about the video capture. That being said, I am grateful to be able to view the added footage shot at the soundcheck. Thank you for recognizing Duane's lasting importance and greatness.

I have not seen this until tonight, 5-23-17, and Vince Gill does this famous guitar more
than proud. Vince is a force of nature anyway, but it's impressive how beautifully he plays
here. What a sound! Of course, it may be the original guitar Duane owned but those
pickups are not original. Those were switched out to the cherry sunburst '59 LP he traded
the Gold Top, a Marshall 50 watt head, and $200 for. The pickups now in the Gold top '57
still P.A.F. humbuckers but not the originals. Who cares? It sounds incredible.

Today I watched the 48th CMA Awards for the umpteenth time which is a pretty happening view, guess who got the Lifetime Achievement Award,..I remember Vince back in the days of Pure Prairie League you know ''Amy'' aside the likes of Michael Murphy ''Wild Fire'' and seeing him here with Duane's Gold Top I preferred his playing on the '59 Tobaccoburst and Dickie on the Gold Top at times both Duane and Dickie on the SG/LP which Derek Trucks also made a staple of,..but hearing that Gold Top and the tones he wrangled really captured a sense of going back in my memories and giving thanks for the music will always be a big part of my life even have the 8 Track that I refuse to part with,.. believe it or not I wore that tape to the point I can't figure but thankful that it's still with me cause every other 8 Track gave it up long ago go figure it's the ABB's 1st recording without Duane and Berry and it's pretty obvious the country influences were about to become a huge part of our heritage mainly hearing the Outlaws, Skynyrd, Doobie Bros.and the Rebel fathers thereafter. I even saw Charlie Daniels play 2 back to back shows for the inmates at Attica Corr. Facilty and by coincidence my band that same night opened up for his opening band The Winters Bros.Band in Alden NY and the influences of their music was pure Bros music Dual Les Pauls and slide that you can tell was going to keep that night in Central Park alive forever in my life, I am very grateful for that night,WOW!!! BTW give a listen to today's Wranglers the likes of Blackberry Smoke and the Cadillac 3, it's in the BLOOD,Bro,Later!

Do you mean the Irving Waugh Award of Excellence that was given to Vince Gill? He was the only the second musician after Johnny Cash in 2003 to receive it. In many articles about that CMA show indicated much criticisms with lower rating this year and said awarding Vince was the best part of the whole show.

I came across an old vinyl copy of the PPL album with Aimee. No mention of Vince Gill in the credits anywhere. Not in the whole album. That band had several personel changes during it's tenure.

So many people know Vince Gill as a country music performer? In the early to mid 70.s Vince assembled a Group known as "Pure Prairie League"? The track he released was "Amy" a great introduction from Vince Gill.I seen Vince then, and a few years back! A sad thing is seeing a very accomplished Rock Guitarist playing country, instead of his passion, and love,"ROCK".

John Reynolds The song is 'Pretty Little Adriana'. It is included in one of his album called 'High Lonesome Sound'. He wrote a song about a 12 year old girl who was killed by a drive by shooting in Nashville. The incident struck him so deeply he decided to write a song for the her parents how they were feeling about their daughter. He earned a Grammy Award for the best male vocal in 1997.
