The waves on Katara’s water tribe outfit indicate she is a waterbender. The Triangles / fixed geometry of Sokka’s water tribe outfit indicate he is a non-bender. According to some behind the sceenes each tribe has clothing that indicate bender or non-bender for water, earth and fire. (All airbenders are benders intrinsically).

      @@sunflowerangelnctzen Yes. Yes exactly.
It has been cannon since the early “Discovering the Air nomads” section in the Avatar the last airbender Legacy books approved by the creators. They were first published between 2008 through 2012 before Legend of Korra. All Children born to Air Nomad parents inherit Airbending and are also Airbenders.
If one parent is an Air Nomad and the other is a bender from a different nation, (I.e. Aang being an Airbender and Katara being a water Bender), the same gender children of the Airbending parent inherit Airbending / Airbending potential. An opposite gender child might or might not, inherit airbending ability / airbending potential. Other factors do play a role. The equal presence of 2 bending potentials tend to cancel each other out, causing the child to appear to be a nonbender, as only one type of bending is possible for anyone, aside from the current Avatar to express and use. In the case of 2 bending potentials if one is a tiny bit over 50% that is the bending ability the child will be able to express. The Avatar is born to one nation but has the potential and ability to express the bending of all nations, which makes the passing on of bending ability genetically a bit more complicated.
Aang’s daughter is a water bender like her mother Katara. This demonstrates gender is a factor, but not the only factor in passing on bending to the next generation. She did not inherit the ability to Airbend, but she does most likely have essentially, dormant or inactive airbending potential. Aang’s daughter may have unexpressed airbending potential that is less than 50% but the waterbending trait, Katara, her same gender mom gave her, combined with the fact that Aang is also a water bender, with waterbending potential, means his daughter inherited a waterbending trait greater than 50%, making her a waterbender.
In Legend of Korra Aang has 2 sons capable of Airbending. One has it active from birth, as he seems to have only inherited the ability to airbend from Aang with apparently no waterbending potential from his mother Katara. The other son was born with the potential for both waterbending and airbending. However, only the Avatar can hold and express more than one type of bending, therefore the presence of the Air and Water bending potentials canceled each other out. That is why Aang’s other son initially appeared to be a Non-bender. He finally receives Airbending, when Airbending finally returns to the world, in Legend of Korra, when his airbending potential, as a result of the events in Legend of Korra, becomes greater than his water bending potential by a tiny amount.
Aang’s Airbending from birth son married a Non-bender and they had 4 Airbending Children 2 girls and 2 boys. Showing that the ability to airbend will show up, it’s a dominant trait, when an Airbender mates with another Airbender or non-bender.
Avatar Kyoshi was born with green eyes like most earthbenders. Her dad was from the earth kingdom; but her mom was a banished Air-bending nun, who abandoned her as a very young child, according to the Kyoshi books. Important context, during Kyoshi’s lifetime and before, marriages between people of different nations was not permissible/ highly discouraged/ criminal / an automatic reason for banishment, depending on nation. Therefore when Avatar Kyoshi’s mom left the Air Nomads to be with her other nation mate, she became a banished nun and circumstances resulted in her becoming essentially a pirate/traveling performer, while keeping her airbending 100% hidden.
When Kyoshi was born her mother could not believe that she had failed to pass on airbending, to her daughter, as that was unheard of, for as long as the Air-nomads had history. The books suggest Kyoshi’s mom was devastated, and took it as a judgement from the universe against her, a universal punishment for abandoning her air-nomad culture and teachings. It is suggested in the books that her mom abandoned Kyoshi without knowing or ever learning that Kyoshi was the Avatar. Kyoshi’s mom had not failed in passing on airbending, it was just the time of the earthbending incarnation of the Avatar. Kyoshi developed Earthbending first and obviously the other bendings as well, as per the Kyoshi books. Kyoshi’s Airbending fans are the one possession her mother left with Kyoshi when she left, which Kyoshi kept and used her whole life.)
So YES according to Cannon all airbenders are benders. They are the only nation for which this is true. Every Air-nomad is a bender.
The term Air-Acolyte began / came into being, and is currently applied to non-benders, from season 3 legend of Korra and after, who choose to live among the air nomads at one of the air temples, following the Air-nomadic traditions, in order to stay with loved ones who became airbenders according to the events in Legend of Korra.
Again Yes, All Airbenders are benders intrinsically. Any non-bender, from the time point of season 3 of Korra or after living with the airbenders is called an Air-acolyte, not an airbender.

The Lord of the Rings was filmed in one go and so could this have been. This is Netflix not committing to a major IP and it's quite worrying. They should be confident in their producers and not wait 3 years until they get the reception of season 1. If LOTR had waited this long, it wouldn't be what it is now. Hell, Netflix even filmed the fucking disaster that was Rebel Moon and committed to the second part. Even though most people don't like the movie, it is the right way to finish stuff, otherwise people don't engage with new projects to begin with anymore.

Since nobody in the series is really impressed by Azula's blue flames, it can be assumed it's a skill most firebanders could learn, but most likely wouldn't bother with it since regular fire is already good enough. To be honest, I would guess that Azulas role in this first season would be something more as a back story, a flashback, or something more discrete. A behind the scenes with the producers of the Netflix Avatar the last airbender show on youtube that I found by chance, as a result of the new trailer dropping, revealed that in designing the costumes, the Netflix producer noted that the waves, ripples, swirling water, and patterns of water changing state are found on the clothing of waterbenders like Katara, while non-benders of the water tribe like Sokka have fixed geometries in the patterns of their water tribe clothing. The producer said “…watch for it, even in earth kingdom, and fire nation outfits, benders and non-benders will be indicated by distinguishable clothing patterns connected to the appropriate bending element, or fixed static patterns (I.e. not all fire nation soldiers are firebenders) if one is paying attention.” It is a new aspect/detail that the producers / costume designers added as an Easter Egg. It also helped distinguish on set bending actors/actresses from non-bending actors/actresses to assist in keeping the choreography and appropriate actions consistent for individual scenes.

I think them playing it safe and not counting their chickens before they hatched is a smart move, now once the show drops and it's a hit (and it will be) I'd expect a green light for season 2 and 3, and I'd be very surprised if they weren't filmed back to back to take full advantage of current ages. Honestly I can see them in the planning stages by mid-March, Pre-Production by May at the earliest, they could realistically have the next 2 seasons filmed within the next year and spend whatever time they need on it after that. I think a year+ timeline isn't awful, but that ticking clock of "by summers end" is still a very important thing imo. If it takes several years to arrive.. it just makes the entire Fire Nation look completely incompetent that they haven't found/captured/killed the avatar yet.

    • @itsmeike
      @itsmeike 8 месяцев назад +3

I'm sure it won't take several years, but like two or maybe even three years is logical. Especially when you consider that Aang went all spirit mode and wiped out an entire fucking navy at the North Pole, the Fire Nation would be weakened militarily for a good while and Aang would be off limits until he leaves the North Pole (and if they do a time skip, my assumption will be that the Gaang spends significantly longer at the North Pole so Aang and Katara can truly master waterbending).

Outside of live action limitations with age, I actually think it may improve on the original story if it spans over multiple years instead of all within 1 year. Makes more sense for Aang truly mastering Water and Earth etc. + They may be able to add it to the Library Arc to learn about the Comet date as well as the Eclipse. Also a young adult Aang fighting Ozai IMO makes for a better finale than a 12 year old fighting Ozai. Kind of like Harry Potter's character evolving into a young adult for that final showdown.

theres a few ways they could get around the age elapsing problem:
    1) They could just say Aang's chi (life force) catches up with him more quickly cuz he's really 112 and not 12. That's believable enough for me.
    2) Do what Avatarist said and make it suspenseful that we don't know when the commit is coming and it could take 1-5 years (like why would they have exact dates anyway, precisely tracking a comet is hard even in today's times)
    3) Remind people that it takes most Avatars 20+ years to master all the elements, so there is still a significant ticking clock for Aang to have to learn all the elements in only 5 years.

One part of the live action that I am glad that they changed was the budding relationship between Aang and Katara. By aging the cast in a more natural progression the story line can be explored with it not feeling icky. The time elapse will also make the over all threat of the fire nation feel more intense. Has there been a war for the last 100 years? Sure. But build up of the attacks, the fall of Omashu, the taking of Ba Sing Se and the near complete obliteration of the other kingdoms will feel more terrifying if it is over years rather than weeks.

I can totally see them pushing the comets arrival reveal to the live action "the library" episode. While there, with Toph and the Professor, Aang and Sokka sneak off to the planetarium and the events play out pretty much 1-to-1 with the animated series. Only this time, the reason they go there in the first place is to find the comets arrival. Or they find the date for the eclipse, but see something that mentions the comet and they further investigate. I think organizing it that way clears most issues up. Make it the book 2 season mid season finale reveal, then with the added gut punch of appa going missing, I think that will make for a stellar viewer experience. If done right.
