  • He has to be the best singer in the world right now?! He must be! Who is better? Today I'm looking at at Dimash Qudaibergen, a singer I've mentioned fleetingly in my podcast with Elizabeth Zharoff before. I was blown away when I saw a video of him performing this song, and I want to share it with you now.

Thank you Justin, I've been waiting for this super reaction... Dimash is on his own league I would say... He has an operatic gem of Olyimpico if you're interested to listen to it... But he never cease to explore how versatile human voice could do, by crossing over different types of genres from folks, rocks, rap to jazz, not only pop, even the instrumental sound as well.. besides the octave range... You will see the creative masterpiece on one of his own composition The Story of One Sky...not to mention his other songs... Stranger and Ikanaide are so well worth listening..

Holy Sh*t, one of the RUclipsrs I watch regularly is cheking out Dimash!
When I bought the Permission to Land CD back in 2003 never did I imagine I would later watch Justin Hawkins talk about the man I now consider to the best vocalist alive and an artist I have travelled to other continents to watch/hear live.
Pretty sure your comment section is filled with comments about Dimash's versatility. Dimash loves all kinds of music and wants to do it all,so he does. Also, during a 3-4h concert he can't only sing the heavy and very voice demanding songs - he needs some lighter stuff in between (and so do the audience!). He truly utilizes his voice to the max in many songs, songs like The Story Of One Sky, Know, Ave Maria, Love Of Tired Swans, Stranger, Battle Of Memories are less pop, he also does some folk/folk-rock, he even sang the Go Go Power Rangers tune for a chinese OST" His voice truly can do it all and he loves to explore and cross between genres.
    Thank you for your reaction!

Watch Dimash Live Almaty Concert song = Story Of One Sky = Full on energy, full on voice(s), rocker scream at end... (btw performed 3rd hour in of concert) I too feel like his "pop" songs are a waste of talent (although I feel disloyal saying anything even slightly negative towards Dimash) He made a conscious choice in creating his own genre (completely encouraged by everyone to become strictly Opera but he wanted more = to expose his voice, music & performance to a wider /diverse audience).....If you look at his concert audiences (as well as fans) = all ages, all ethnicities, all music genre lovers,,,,,(i.e. able to sell out New York concert appearance in 10 minutes...although his music is not "radio play", etc. or even something one might listen to as a "personal pick", watching him perform is appreciated/respected by most ♥

All his concerts and projects were carefully scheduled around his studies, and is considered a top scholar among leading acamedicians.

You say it yourself, that he is currently writing his thesis, so he is not a PhD yet. Please use the title "Dr." when it is appropriate, that is, when he actually gets it after writing and defending his thesis. He is good enough in what he does, there's no need to overstate things he did not do (yet).
I am a PhD student myself, just finishing my thesis, and would never ever want anyone to call me "Dr." until I actually get the title. Many people study and write their thesis, not many actually finishes the process.

My dear Sanders, PhDs are "a dime a dozen in this bunch, so what makes you think you're hot shi* " (my Dad to a brother) Mine from Emory, siblings from Stanford, Cal Tech, University of Chicago and one a tenured professor of physics at UCON, my Dad, MIT, my Mother, Oberlin and therein lies the proverbial rub. We are all musicians as well, and my sister (Oberlin) and I grew up in Kazakhstan, my father working as an independent consultant in their then burgeoning oil industry. My sister and several friends went to uni with him and the program he's in is so rarified, few quality, fewer complete it. His thesis will take years, that's a given and very often the liberty of the honorific is given in light of this situation. It's the only Doctorate that's ever impressed any of us, so rigorous, demanding and overwhelming to those of faint heart. Ha ! He has a brilliant music intellect, mapped this course years ago to get the weight of the absolute necessity of this stringent exercise in education behind him as soon as possible enabling him to begin to compose seriously and teach on the university level later in life. Good luck on yours ! And I'll call him anything I choose, except a call to go to the grocery store. He draws the line there, won't even go for his Mom. Throws his keys to Mansur and runs ! 🤣

What you have to consider is that this song was the first one to make him famous. He literally had to have bodyguards immediately after his performance of this song was shown on Chinese TV. It's plain to see from his more recent work that he's trying to break away from the high powered vocals but of course the fans won't let him. It's like with every concert of every artist, fans are disappointed if they don't hear their favourite songs. His new song Weekend is a complete club track done in Collab with a DJ and I'm sure there's going to be a fair few people saying he's wasting his vocal ability with that one too.

@@MetalmcBiff You probably just haven't listened to the more palatable rap tracks out there yet. Hip Hop represents a wide array of styles, ranging from a technical display of flows and rhythms..-
      ruclips.net/video/jF27U4gHAGk/видео.html
..to something mellower, more vibe-y and sentimental like this tribute to a fictional setting in a commercially successful video game in history.
      ruclips.net/video/F1Vx-9TUyzA/видео.html
Furthermore, the lack of traditional melodic or harmonic outline in rapping is precisely a unique challenge in itself because rapping demands its performer to develop a distinct style and techniques, as well as the ability to stay in tune with the music. This is because rapping still emphasizes elements such as rhythms, groove a.k.a flow, intonation, articulation and tone.
I presume your experience about rapping may be limited to what's played on the radio, all those mainstream stuff. Because if you ever try to explore deeper and outside the mainstream realm, you'll find more underappreciated stuff like this.
      ruclips.net/video/TwLYHljPlUg/видео.html
You hear that clearly there, a rapper who's actually rapping in odd time signatures over a modern jazz/fusion composition. More proof that hip hop/rap will always have its place in music.

    1. If you really want to know Dimash, who he is, what he is capable of, what he thinks, go watch "The Story of One Sky". It is a Requiem he composed himself for 3 years. The plot of the Music Video was written by him. He sings and he acts in this video too. The key to understand the plot is "Man is the caravan, life is the path", a Kazakh proverb. The song is in English. It is a 13 minutes video. There you can see that Dimash has not this incredible voice, he is a human with values and he has no fear to tell the world what he thinks, what matters for him. 2. Dimash was invited to be a tenor in the main opera in Kazakstan but he wants to follow his own path singing what he calls a neoclassic genre that mix opera and different pop "genres". 3. Dimash always "paints" his notes with his hands. Hug from Brazil! The Story of One Sky MV ruclips.net/video/1Psjws97FoA/видео.html

This is just a signature song for him. Stranger is an original written specifically for him and has more range and genre bending. He also released 2 new original songs in the past year that are not even remotely pop - The Story of One Sky is incredible and is all over the map vocally with some throat singing, metal screams, traditional “yodels”, etc. and El Amor En Ti is a combination of classical and pop jazz where he becomes his own quartet. You can see both those songs back to back and sung live from his Stranger concert that is on his channel in part 3 (meaning he had already been singing for about 3 hours beforehand). He composed both of them himself. Give those a listen and you will change your tune. 😉

Been following Dimash since 2017 and from what I've gathered, he doesn't confine himself in a specific genre although many of his famous songs might sound more pop-ish. I'm especially impressed whenever he puts out songs of traditional sounds, folk genre. Most young singers these days don't do that. I'm glad he's not boxed into any spesific genre. It creates a surprise element whenever he announce a new song coming up.
Dimash's hands/fingers is one of the most favourite topic of Dimash aside from his face among his fans. They say his hands always look like he's playing invisible instruments or sometimes like he is counting fingers or waging his pointer finger. You'd realise in some performances the cameraman focuses some few seconds just on his hands as if on purpose. As if they probably know what the fans are very intrigued about.

The Singer show in China was with all Chinese seasoned singers, Dimash was a wild card from Kazakhstan and the youngest singer. Dimash's S.O.S. was the 1st performance in 2017. That is when he became world wide famous and gained his massive fan group called 'Dears'. Yes he does have a 7+ octave range. He trains every day for no less than 3 hours a day and has since childhood. He IS music. He sings in multiple genres and has a large catalog. His music videos are of the highest quality and stunning. S.O.S. is just the tiny tip of the iceberg that is Dimash. You will get goosebumps and tears with each performance no matter what genre or singing style. He calls his neoclassical. Thank you for your analysis, it was very enjoyable and informative. You clearly know your music. :) But I disagree with you about Dimash limiting himself to 'poppy' songs! What have you been listening to? What about 'Love of Tired Swans', 'Endless Dimensions', 'Marigolds', 'Love is but a Dream', 'Sinful Passion', 'Passione', 'Ogni Pietra', and so much more??? Dimash does three and a half hour concerts. It would be very difficult for him to sing one challenging song after another. Putting in some pop songs in the mix gives him time to rest his voice a little. Plus a lot of his songs are very emotional stories. The audience would be wrecks listening to that all evening. We need a bit of light relief. I suggest you watch a whole concert to experience what he has to offer. The recent Almatey concert is on you tube in three parts. Tell us after seeing that, that he is wasting his talent.

You did well, thank you. To understand Dimash, to learn from him, you need to listen to practically every song he ever sang. Then you'll hear the real range, the real power, the real control. He is a Godsend, and it's time for everyone, especially the United States, to realize that. Most of his songs no one on this planet can cover, and it might take another hundred or more years for God to create another Dimash. Good luck.

Two other songs worth seeing him do are "Autumn Strong" (about famous Chinese actress at end of WW2 who was discovered to be Japanese, and exiled from China). Beautiful song. And "Daybreak". (You may remember the news of a cable car disaster in China a couple of decades ago). "Daybreak" is about the only survivor (a toddler.. handed up before the cable car crashed to the ground). The woman who wrote the song (Han Hong) later adopted the little boy. Both Dimash's version, and Han Hong's version are worth seeing. Justin definitely worth checking out the Chinese show "Singer". But here’s where the difference lies, Dimash puts his whole souls into everything he does and not one of his songs has the same vibe throughout! He takes you on a journey and draws you in like a sorcerer! His voice and abilities are great for movie soundtracks! He is on a level unmatched! Another artist that comes close though is Hua Chenyu; another musical genius that commands the stage and engages the audience. Check out: Nunchucks, Great Sage Equal to Heaven, Jackdaw Boy and I Don’t Care. If you want to hear Dimash doing subharmonics and full on screaming a là Metal you can catch that in the live fancam version of ‘The Story of One Sky’. The ‘scream’ is more authentic and technically on point in the official MV. He’s dabbled with rock in songs like ‘War and Peace’ and the Kazakh folk/rock song ‘Durduraz’. But like you I want to hear him fully commit to a rock or metal track to let that Lamborghini out of the garage. He has all the tools and techniques to smash it. I think he’s a bit damned if you do and damned if you don’t with his fans and detractors. Still love his skill and demeanour but being a rock/alt-rock girl I’m gagging for a song in those genres. I beg to differ though on something you said. He doesn't only sing pop. What kind of music would you like to hear? Ican probably point you towards something you'd like better. He sings classical, pop, jazz, rock, rap, ballads, all kinds of ethnic traditional, film themes, video game themes, TV themes and more. He frequently mixes several genres together in the same song too. I like the songs that are powerful, dramatic and/or have oriental melismatic/yodelling vocalisations, but that's just personal preference. You probably need to listen to a lot more of his songs over a wider area of styles to get a more complete picture of what he can do. I have picked a few examples:
    Durduraz (Kazakh rock)
    Kieli Meken (Kazakh rock)
    Olympico (neo-classical in Italian)
    Stranger (power ballad in English)
    Golden (rock in English)
The Story of One Sky (original composition, mixed genres, 13 min mini-film in English)
Across Endless Dimensions (Sci-Fi film theme in English)
Ikanaide (ballad in Japanese, from Tokyo Jazz festival)
El Amor En Ti (neo-classical with some pop, in Spanish)
    Samaltau (Kazakh traditional/ethnic)
Swan Goose (duet with Mongolian singer Tengri and throat singing band, in Kazakh and Mandarin)
Diva Dance + The Drunken Concubine (duet with Peking Opera singer Li Yugang, in Mandarin)
Be With Me (original composition, original MV, pop in English and rap in Kazakh)
Thanks so much for reacting to Dimash! I have subbed in the hope of seeing you react to more! 🥰

Dimash is currently living in LA and has been busy composing and recording the soundtrack for the latest Jackie Chan movie as well as finishing a song he started prepandemic with Walter Afanasieff who wrote the Titanic theme tune.
I understand your comments about the pop side but Dimash is incredibly savvy when it comes to the music business and is fully aware that his more operatic songs don't appeal to the masses. In order to be a commercial success too he has to dumb it down for the average listener.

BTW, I don't consider practicing restraint and curtailing the vocal gymnastics to be "dumbing it down" in every instance...even some of us poor, unrefined, average listeners have extensive musical training and understand that less can oftentimes be more when the song demands a simpler approach...there are plenty of examples of performers doing vocal cartwheels in commercially successful songs...people would be much more supportive of Dimash overall if his fanbase wasn't so toxic...the tiniest critique or suggestion that he isn't the greatest vocalist ever born generally results in a massive assault from obsessed "Dears" that, for some reason, fail to recognize that his vocal stylings may not be everyone's cup of tea...it doesn't mean we have an inadequate or undeveloped, unrefined ear...it means we just don't love him like you do...and I'm sorry, but that's allowed...

If I had to listen to only Dimash's vocal acrobatic songs then I probably wouldn't listen to him every day but the fact that he has such a wide variety of music and that you never know what to expect from him next is what excites me the most. Agreed! Dimash is too serious, Justin just belts it out without a second thought. Also “who have we got like that in rock?”… you, Justin… it’s YOU! 🤦🏻‍♀️😂😂😂

@@NinStardustYeah...but because it's a serious song. In fact, that song is a cover from Daniel Balavoine's original one, a french singer. For me, the combination of Dimash voice with the beautiful lyrics and the arrangement is perfect, it improves the original song

That was my reaction too!!! It's like hello Justin, you just belted out the same notes and had to pull it back to avoid blowing out the microphone like you always do on the high ones!🤣@@NinStardust

This song was from a rock opera when his girlfriend was dying in his arms. So, yes, serious.
Justin and Dimash are completely different, and that is great! Variety in music is the best!
I have hoped for some lighter songs from Dimash. "Weekend" comes out in a few days. It is a club/dancing song.
Dimash concerts are a blast, and have a mix of energies and genres. He runs all over the stage, sometimes in his bare feet! He escapes his security guards and gets down into the audience.
It might not be your style. I just think it is good for people to see him, so they won't miss out if they love him like I do!

And Dimash wants to create his own genre... a song with classical touch, pop touch, and sometime folk, rap touch... just in a single song... my favourite ❤

Its funny that you say his other stuff is "poppy" cause he has songs in lots of different styles and genres. Other people say that his music is not not enough pop mainstream🤣😂

Dimesh is a phenomenal singer. Probably the best singer on the planet. It would be interesting to hear him cover Minor Threat’s ‘Straight Edge’ or Black Flag’s ‘Rise Above’.

Damn it, you've just opened another rabbit hole on RUclips for me to fall down :-)
It seems to me like he's is using his hand either to express his intentions or he conducts himself (to keep himself in check, avoid going wild, avoid doing mistakes). It reminded me Caroline Polachek, when she sings her song "Sunset" live.

Talk about holy sh!t!!! I just saw this video. I was looking at you and thought where do I know you from. Then it hit me. Duh the singer from The Darkness. Love love that band. So so nice to see you reacting to the Great Dimash.
