  • Just tried Mark Zagger's Pipe Dream set out this past season and can't argue with the results! Felt weird not covering the trap with dirt but for dealing with rain and mud it sure was helpful. To be a good trapper you've got to always be learning, and if you've never tried this set I would recommend giving it a shot, especially if rain plagues you during trapping season. I was really skeptical about this set, especially with the pipe, but I caught several coyotes this year using it. I'll definitely be setting more this way!

    Been using similar sets for years for fox trapping, only I didn't use a pipe. Just lure on a clump of grass or hay. But I like to use fine grass clipping, or I cut the grass up in about on inch or smaller pieces over the trap. This really creates a nice flat spot for them to step on, and I'm using a smaller trap, typically. The cut up grass doesn't bunch up and get caught between the jaws. They will keep working in most weather better than dirt or even peat moss.

    • @coyotetrappingschool1575
      @coyotetrappingschool1575  5 лет назад

      The little bit that I've set them I've found that getting hay that gets left in the field after it is cut and dried seems to be the best, if I get clippings from my yard they always shrivel and crinkle and don't create the nice flat spot like you're talking about

    Seems like a great set for the rain. I'm a new trapper and have had problems with very heavy rain causing my traps to be caked and not fire.

    • @coyotetrappingschool1575
      @coyotetrappingschool1575  4 года назад +1

      Yep, especially if you are in the east, rain is a constant issue. You can use peat moss too when bedding traps to help keep your traps working through the rain

    The one thing you don't do that Mark does and I do also is use heavy screen wire to help hold up the material when it gets wet. I have been useing this same beddin method for several year but without the pipe. I just use the tbones, coyote paw, and cow hoofs. Cow hoofs and yote paws are my favorite, very deadly. @coyotetrappingschool1575  6 лет назад

      Hey Richard, what do you do with the hoofs/paws? Put them down a dirthole? I'm still experimenting with the set but I'm liking it alot. We'll see how long I can get away with not using screen wire, I'm planning to have some grass clippings to use this year and that may make the screen more of a requirement than just using what is available at the set.

    Since there is no backing, what stops the yote from approaching the set from the back and satisfying his curiosity by sniffing the pipe from above? It seems to me that the yote could approach the set and "work" it from any direction. I'm kind of iffy about this one.

    • @coyotetrappingschool1575

      So that when it rains your dirt doesn't wash out and you need to recover or your trap is sitting in a bed of water. Its all about keeping your set working in wet weather

    • @coyotetrappingschool1575
      @coyotetrappingschool1575  6 лет назад +1

      I prefer my traps nite latched. I run pretty exclusively MB 550s and they come nite latched. To me its just easier, you want your trap set where the pan is just before firing but doesn't fire. For my first few years trapping I didn't have night latched traps and would eye ball it as I was setting the trap but some fire on you and you have to reset them, it saves me a little time to be able to hear that click and know its good to go. Its not a necessity by any means but it is helpful

    • @treyferguson9393
      @treyferguson9393 5 лет назад

      NO you do not have to night latch your traps and unless your gonna run a true 3 pounds of pan tension I don't recommend it. Maybe for rat and mink

      Coyote Trapping School, you are your own worst enemy, you said yourself that Mark moves his remakes to the edge of the circle. So why wouldn’t you too? If you want to be a pro then you have to start acting like one. I see you making all these videos and clips, and you do a great job, plus kudos to you for sticking with your podcast. But you’re putting out so much misinformation and lacking of the important details. It would be highly beneficial for you to maybe study the details from Craig and Mark before you put their stuff all over the internet. Go make 100 of their sets and tend them, then maybe you’ll be able to see and explain the details that you’ve been missing. Keep working at it you’re gonna get there eventually :)

    What kind of pipe did you use and how much in the ground and out of the ground?

    • @coyotetrappingschool1575
      @coyotetrappingschool1575  7 лет назад

      1" Schedule 40 electrical pvc, the gray pipe. It seems to hold up better to hammering into the dirt than white pvc. I cut them 16" long and hammer them halfway into the ground or so. You can put them with only a few inches sticking out of the ground, with softer ground I probably would. My ground is pretty hard. I don't want a passing coyote to be able to grab it and run off easily.

      Herbert Newman You just use a real thin covering, I felt like I wasn't covering them up enough because if I looked I could see the trap through the grass, but as long as the trap is bedded solid and doesn't move except for the pan, it works

    • @herbertnewman4595

    • @studawg66
      @studawg66 6 лет назад

      I was surprised by the amount of covering you gave it as well, but if it works that is all that matters! If you read Zagger's descriptions of his set in Trapper's Post, he says it is very important to use a very light coat of clippings over the trap. He goes so far as to say that you SHOULD be able to see a little of the trap through the clippings if you look hard enough. The key, as you said, is to bed it solid and blend it in pretty well and it will give great results. I used very light grass clippings over a wire screen pan cover and it looked very natural and was the most effective of my sets so far. I have incorporated this bedding technique to my other sets now, because it is really hard to find dry soil to sift where I trap. No more clogged traps and no misses yet.

    • @coyotetrappingschool1575
      @coyotetrappingschool1575  6 лет назад

      I've been doing this on my other sets too, and intend this year to have some grass clippings to make life easier instead of using what is at the set. I'm really liking the bedding technique

    Just shoot the coyote behind the front leg...little to no blood and ignore if there is any. Coyotes run into blood all the time.
    U scrape it away with your trowel and got blood on it. U then laid your pliers on ur trowel and contaminated them. U then put those pliers in ur bag contaminating everything in ur bag. Even ur hammer.
    If u shot the coyote in the head it created a mist which is now all over ur hands and knee pads.
    The only way to get close to eliminating blood at the set is to remove the 'yote out of the set for dispatch...facing downwind. If u still head shoot it u still might get misted.
    Just saying don't get too wound up on the blood. I probably watch too much CSI...lol!!!!
