great, welcome to the club.......WARNING: it get's addicting! You should consider taking instruction, even if it's NOT Coyote U. It would take 5-10 years off of your learning curve and plenty of schools/instructors out there depending on your needs and/or geography.
You know, I thought that was a big old gummer male....but it was a giant old female She behaved very well for the camera and she's in the video a lot. Frankly, I only had Chris (Producer) with me one day, and that was the first coyote of the day. And, we were NOT sure if I'd catch any more, so we maximized her film time!!!!

I also trap in the Northeast. Northeast PA. I started using your set a while ago. Here and there, but I think its going to be my go to set 20-21. I trap in shale and clay. The pipe will help me keep my bait and lure visible. Someday I would like to go to Coyote U. Someday soon. Look forward to seeing you at the conventions.

Great video I just listened to you on Trapping inc podcast and had to see how you make the pipe dream set. I have been doing it a little different by leaving about 8 inches above the ground. I didn't know you were just leaving 2 inches above the ground. I will have to try it this way as well. But I would have to say I did catch fairly well last year on what I was doing and I live in south Louisiana. Thanks for passing on your knowledge here as well.
Awesome video mark I enjoyed it very much. I started using your set last season and I was impressed with how it performed in this northern Illinois freeze thaw freeze thaw conditions. This season im gonna run 50%pipe dreams and 50% dirt holes with my waxed sand and record my data to evaluate at the end of season. Thanks for pouring this out there id love to come to school one of these years.
I would love to hear your results. If you watch the video of me trapping with HeadHunters host Randy Birdsong, the pipes did far better in the snow than his hole sets...and he switched to pipes and grass right in front of my eyes. You should come to Coyote U.......2.5 days of instruction covers FAR more than the Pipe Dream Set. Let me know your results!

I’ve trapped on & off for years, mainly pocket gopher & other garments, & never yet have I caught a coyote, so here I am, attempting to learn what I can, also 54 years old. I’ve learned a lot of useful methods, just searching on RUclips! Triangle of death, ziplock baggies, pipe dreams, lures........
It can get confusing as there is SO much information out there compared to when I started in the 70's........so a guy can get confused as to a lot of ways to skin the cat, so to speak. The good news is that its out there for the taking and the discerning trapper will figure out what does and doesn't work for them.
early 80s i trapped a valley in central Ill. that i checked with binoculars from half a mile away. We had a inch of snow overnight and ill never forget the sight of three red foxes id caught that night. 24 years old at the time about and worked for min. wage I sold those for 75 dollars each back then. Loved that life but fur prices forced me to take a job traveling building golf courses. Got married and never went back. Good memories ive got plenty. i hang cable for yotes around here nowadays from time to time just to keep them out of my chicken coops and for controlling numbers around here a little anyways. you do things right, God bless
Great video i have been trapping in a 5 mile circle off a side by side i run double and triple traps at each set i mostly use gland lure and urine most of the year i have found that saving my own glands and aging them with good urine . I use very little food bait one of my best things ive found to use is blood i collect while my family butcher shop i get several buckets of fresh blood each day that i freeze and make a liquid bait from believe me i dont go chase them they come to the farms im trapping ive went from 25 a year to 80 to 90 coyotes off these 5 farms that are huge beef cattle farms i cant understand how they keep coming in such numbers

I love trapping, I’ve had nobody but RUclips teachers. We got some smart yotes here in western Idaho. Big things I’ve learned are location, how tight you pack around your trap and making the whole set feel natural. Good bait seems to be less important. I caught one on a mouse last week
We have very dry sandy dirt here. Hardest thing for me is getting my trap pan set right. I can’t believe California, I won’t even visit family in the state I hate that liberal poophole

Yes give them a little taste and they will linger and make lots of steps. Even if wind is wrong and they come in on the back, they will work around to the trap side if you put something in the pipe they like the taste of and/or want to possess......no wool, but you could,.....I don't because one strand of wool can be grabbed and pull the whole works out by coons, whatever. I DID use it in pipes in Illinois and we couldn't keep the cats out of the sets.....
I think those are Rhino chaps.....I think I got them at Cabela's......but they are a decade old so might not have them any more but any manufacturer will do
I assume you mean in a dirt field like a corn field? Because my sets are largely in HAY fields. So, I ONLY use grass if its a hay field. In the woods I use leaves instead of grass, and in corn fields I'd probably NOT make a pipe set, but rather a dirt hole with peat moss OR if dry enough and warm enough, just the dirt excavated at the set
If you watch me dig my bed, its easy to dig a SQUARE bed, and the Jake is the only true square-jawed trap on the market. If I used a round jaw, I'd not be able to use my Pulaski Axe to dig my square bed. There's a million other reasons I like the Jake, including being the easiest to use steel screen on to support my material. Also, I feel the bigger jaw spread AND extra power helps me up here in mud and snow country. That said, an MB550 is a great trap and if that's what you use, play around with it and tweak the set to match your trap.

With the trap covered only with grass, will you still make a catch if the coyote steps on the jaw and not so much of the pan, won’t they feel the jaw ?
Oh man, NO, I lost both dogs in 2016.....the old man Rusty died in his sleep Jan 2nd and I had to put his son Boone down in August....he got ate up with cancer. Sure miss those dogs, and they helped to build my catch significantly, and to a large degree, put me on the map
@@markzagger5856 2016?! Time flies. Losing both within a year really empties a home. I still have a pile of dogs with chessies and sled dogs. When Steve G's site went dead I lost touch with a lot of fellow trappers. I have a channel called Musher's Tails if you want to see some of my trapping and sledding.
is there a reason you use the grey pipe instead of the white? the pipe dream set ,i will be trying it your way , i was leaving to much pipe sticking out and was having trouble getting them to commit.they would stay back like a bobcat does .
I think I had hide a grey one better than white....but if you have white try it. A buddy out west uses white, leaving it exposed. Said he thinks it looks like a bleached bone
That screen is cut to fit perfectly inside the jaws but it tucks under the jaw post rivets on each side. The pan of the Jake trap sits lower than most and that, combined with the jaw rivets, make it, in my opinion, the best trap to utilized steel screen on. Well, I think its just the best period for a million other reasons!

It is next to impossible to bed like this and tuck it under the jaws as when I tap it in with my hammer it pushes to other side and then bucks up in middle when pack that side. Can this be bought at Lowe's, etc. or is it special order, special stiffness. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks again.
I used steel screen....I know many people use aluminum screen. Steel screen can be found by some trap supply dealers......NO BS Lures and Baits, Keg Creek, OGorman. I've heard you can buy it from places like McMaster Carr, etc. but I've never done that......
Over the last 5-6 years, coyote fur prices have been the highest they've been since the fur boom in the mid-80's in general. That said, costs to produce are up as well. Lots of reasons to trap and control coyotes. Gets down to the individual and reasons thereof.
I use a .22 low velocity round (CCC Quiet) dead center above eyes below ears in flat part of skull. NOT between the eyes in the nasal cavity, but rather higher on the big flat part of the skull.
63 pounds. I have only trapped TWO that broke 60-lbs out of thousands. Several over 50 lbs but even those are not as common as one might think. I'd guess I get ONE 50-lb coyote out of every 100 coyotes I catch in NY.
Have u ever tried/used tim wells squeaker for trapping? I think it'd be a cool video if u compared 2 sets one with using the squeaker and one without I'm just getting into trapping and debating on buying one to try it out
Great stuff. I used the pipe dream set exclusively last year and used a quarter of the bait I would usually use. In CT we have similar climate and this definitely turned into my go to. What kind of .22 was that?
I actually love coyotes, I have respect for them too even though I plan to dispatch most. Population control is the goal, not too wipe them out completely. I’m just glad I’m not a watermelon farmer around here lol they keep the feral cat population down in big cities which protects wild birds. But out here in the rural areas they are pesky chicken thieves
Very nice, Mark... lotta myths and misinformation debunked about your very own set right there... I always laugh when people explain how to make this set and get it completely wrong.
You can used a #3 Bridger as well as long as you INSIDE laminate the jaws to decrease the inside jaw spread. NO BS Traps are also very popular. What ever you choose I'd go dog less, center-swiveled, laminated, offset jaws. Stalker Fabrications has a website and the can do modifications for you, including laminations and baseplates for center swiveling

I do...just table salt in the round one-pound containers......that video was shot on a bluebird day and week, so no salt. Later, I use it with gusto!

works fine in frozen ground...easier to get a pipe in than dig a hole set. 22 subsonic for dispatch

Yes, but it won't move since hammered into place, so no issue

Ha! Its a firewood/log carrier! Grillinator is the brand name.
So your levers stay on top of the ground? You don’t put the levers below surface of the ground?
yes, but I DO hit my hammer at 3 and 9 O'Clock on top of the sod to counter-sink them and let the trap drop a little lower into the bed

fleas and ticks are an issue and I spray them all down in my shop when I unload them with Sawyers and haven't had any issues in years.
I don't know that anyone else has mentioned it but why do you use a rifle instead of maybe a small pistol, 22-caliber when you dispatch?
More accurate (sometimes they don't hold still!) AND it doesn't hurt my ears like a pistol!

Set more traps over a bigger area.......its a game of percentages. You need to look at several good sets to catch one or more......

Winter is tough......I think you guys can use snares there and if that's true, you DO have a great alternative approach vs. using only foot-grabbers

I used steel screen....I know many people use aluminum screen. Steel screen can be found by some trap supply dealers......NO BS Lures and Baits, Keg Creek, OGorman. I've heard you can buy it from places like McMaster Carr, etc. but I've never done that......

Are their even places to sell furs anymore ? Would the prices even make it worth it ?
Over the last 5-6 years, coyote fur prices have been the highest they've been since the fur boom in the mid-80's in general. That said, costs to produce are up as well. Lots of reasons to trap and control coyotes. Gets down to the individual and reasons thereof.
What size trap do you use for Coyote.
Those are Jake traps....I'd assume the size of MOST #3-sized traps on the market
When dispatching, where is the best shot placement without ruining the fur?
I use a .22 low velocity round (CCC Quiet) dead center above eyes below ears in flat part of skull. NOT between the eyes in the nasal cavity, but rather higher on the big flat part of the skull.

any .22 rifle will do.....nothing fancy needed.

Whats the heaviest coyote you've ever gotten?
63 pounds. I have only trapped TWO that broke 60-lbs out of thousands. Several over 50 lbs but even those are not as common as one might think. I'd guess I get ONE 50-lb coyote out of every 100 coyotes I catch in NY.

Have u ever tried/used tim wells squeaker for trapping? I think it'd be a cool video if u compared 2 sets one with using the squeaker and one without I'm just getting into trapping and debating on buying one to try it out

Great stuff. I used the pipe dream set exclusively last year and used a quarter of the bait I would usually use. In CT we have similar climate and this definitely turned into my go to. What kind of .22 was that?

I actually love coyotes, I have respect for them too even though I plan to dispatch most. Population control is the goal, not too wipe them out completely. I’m just glad I’m not a watermelon farmer around here lol they keep the feral cat population down in big cities which protects wild birds. But out here in the rural areas they are pesky chicken thieves

Can you recommend some NY legal leg holds. I know the bridger #2 is legal with 5 3/4 Jaw spread. Any suggestions much appreciated
You can used a #3 Bridger as well as long as you INSIDE laminate the jaws to decrease the inside jaw spread. NO BS Traps are also very popular. What ever you choose I'd go dog less, center-swiveled, laminated, offset jaws. Stalker Fabrications has a website and the can do modifications for you, including laminations and baseplates for center swiveling
