  • The flat set or scent post set is a must for any predator trapper to know. This set mimics where another animal has marked its territory, which incites a natural curiosity response from other predators. Whether you're trapping coyotes, bobcats, or foxes, you should be using this set, and it will catch other furbearers too, like raccoons, possums, and skunks. To me, flat sets are THE coyote taker. Mainly what I run in the mountains/woods. One of the main reasons is the leaves. Your always fighting them. But, when I use a dirt hole, it's really big and really rough looking. Dirt goes everywhere, and hole is the size of a football and deep with a trench out front that slopes towards the hole with my trap about a foot back. It's basically the old old charlie robbins style dirthole. I run the same hole for cats, only I block the chute down and run my trap about 6 or so inches further back. Dirt holes produce for me, but flat sets are my coyote takers. I noticed you use Dobbins urine. I get my cat urine from Paul too. It's Andy Weiser's urine but Paul buys some from him and bottles it. It's the best quality on the market, and Paul thinks it's by far the highest quality. That says a LOT coming from Paul Dobbins. His test lure this year was unbelievable. I'm hoping he keeps it on and makes it a part of his line. Great video though Kris. I like to take a 1 inch hardwood dowel and drill a 3/4 or 1 inch hole in the top and I put my lure in the hole and shove it into a grass clump on my flat sets. I use m-44's a lot too on my flats. If you haven't tried them, you should give them a try. I can tell you how to make them if ya wanna try 'em. Again, great video Kris

Get yourself some grass shears to blend in the grass on top of your trap. You can blend it in better and not worry about grass clogging your set.

I noticed that you used the same gloves for setting your trap and putting out your lure. Will that not contaminate your trap and cause it to get dug up? That was a great video. Keep em coming Mr. Pope!

Alot of times I will use different gloves, but that is why I like the rubber coated gloves. If I'm worried that I got some scent on them I'll just rub them in the dirt real good. I haven't had any problems with using the same gloves that way

It can cause problems never use the same gloves and just take your gloves off and use bare hands for baiting

Good info but I would have taken my gloves off when placing baits and lures.

I usually change gloves when baiting/luring but that's one reason I like the coated gloves, if I use the same gloves I'll just rub them in the dirt and keep going.

I don’t use gloves for anything. Haven’t seen a difference yet

Why dont you change gloves when you set traps and lure the site?

Honestly, laziness. I use rubber palm gloves and always rub them good with dirt after I get done luring, and I'm careful not to get lure on the gloves themselves. I don't feel like I'm getting any contamination on my traps, as I don't usually have dig ups or anything like that, but can't say for sure.
