These types of markets are hit or miss bro. Scammers are everywhere but I feel you on the overpriced products/groceries. Last year I went to instanbul Turkey to the famous Grand Bazaar, very popular and well known gorgeous place. But everything in there was 2-4x more expensive then what you can buy locally in neighborhoods around instanbul. Basically a tourist trap lol.
As a Brazilian, I recommend the local fairs on Saturday and Sunday, these are the fruits we eat and come from the Family Agriculture of people in the countryside

At times I definitely miss my bed…. Traveling can wear you out! São Paulo definitely has some thieves…. I have strategies to make it hard to catch me… In less than secure places, I constantly move to limit the chances of getting plot on. Even when the camera is on I’m constantly glancing and checking peripherals.
