Very interesting. Pontiac certainly knew how to build muscle. I was amazed that it beat a couple of Ferrari GTO ‘s.They are one of the most collectibles in the world. 30+ million

That Morter trend test was done on a early 1962 421 sd which came with 389 sd heads that had small 1.92 intake valves and not the 2.02 valves or the higher compression heads of 12-1 or 13-1 the 980 head engines were able to make over 500 HP the 1963 engines had 980 heads . wish i could remember the magazine that i read , of Ford racer saying those damn Pontiacs should be rated 504 HP and not that 405 HP RATING .

I think the black Tempest at the drag strip was a 4 cylinder.

It did say "4 CYLINDER 4 SPEED 4 BARREL" on the rear window. There was a version of the Trophy 4 engine (the 4 cyl engine that was the passenger side half of a 389 V8) that was equipped exactly that way and rated at 150 hp with premium gas. This one in the video has definitely been breathed on.

It was really an interesting car with several unusual solutions. Keep in mind this was 1963 and the Pontiac GTO came out the following year, so maybe it's the first muscle car? Everything is of course a matter of definition and whether you factor in acceleration or top speed. Another great car is the "Dodge Hurst Hemi Dart 1968", which was also mentioned in the comments.

How did this car compare to the very rare Ford Thunderbolt (not Thunderbird) of that same era?

I owned a 63 Lemans and it was the worst car imaginable. It ate timing chains, broke ball joints and rear axel shafts.

you should stop bs-ing around, you're clipping everyone else's vids to make your own vid. talking 421 but showing Nunzi's Tempest 4 cylinder burning the tires ? then showing Paul Goldsmith in a Plymouth, not a Pontiac ? you're saying GM build a twin 2 speed/ 4 speed trans, that was done by RAY NICHELS, is was one or one, in his race shop. not by Pontiac. is the video voice A-i too ? it's goofy already. the vid obviously doesn't come from your own authentic knowledge building these engines, you're just parroting what you or A-i Google has found online about the topic. just to run up a hit count and get a payoff from RUclips ?

With Only 12 Built, it Didn't exist unless you were Mickey Thompson or Similar.....The Only Available Tempest--GTO to Joe Blow was relatively Lame hydraulic(Juice) Lifter, Standard compression, warmed up Std production based 326, 389 & 400 engines...The Same "No Factory Hotrods" GM decree while Severely limited Pontiac Enthusiastically sold Many thousands of Hot tuned, High compression Solid Lifter 409, 396 & 427 engine equipped cars to Any Joe Blow down at local Chevy dealership......Production juice Cammed GTO not even on same Planet compared to easy Available Chevy's.......

Not the fastest muscle car of the 1960's...but...Ferraris are just red. They aren't all that fast. Small block Fords made monkeys out of them.
