Always have a couple of fire extinguishers, and have different kinds like water, foam, and powder. And never forget the fire blankets so you can kill fire or use them as protection. Spread around the house but especially kitchen and exits. That is what I do in my modern home here in Sweden and I would not do any less in the Philippines.

Mike, I found this episode to be deeply reflective as you really took account of yourself and held yourself accountable (as in who was the common denominator).... Much respect my brother.
I think you have addressed the biggest issues by fact of doing such a good job in Mate Selection.... Janet is a wonderful person and you make a really good couple (perhaps you got it right this time). She will be there for you in emergencies and the long haul issues.
Not to add to your 'worries', but for me one of the primary issues I intend to address, in addition to those you mentioned, is long term (20-30 years) living costs possibly associated with inflation and US Dollar devaluation. That of course requires good prudent investments, for me that starts with a house with land, solar, water, animals, etc. I don't want to be 'reliant' on the Exchange Rate always being in my favor.... imagine if we go back to the exchange rate of 2014 approx $1USD=P40 peso but you still have this inflation (aka Stagflation), ouch!
Your plan of building a simple home with a couple rental units for Janet may in reality be what saves your butt..... should it need saving : ) ~ Wonderful episode Mike. Peace and Love, B Goat

An excellent video, Mike. It is not an easy thing to confess one's fears for all the world to see. I worry about containing my road rage anger as well. Almost getting hit by a car, getting killed or endangering a loved one, releases a TON of adrenaline into the brain. It is almost impossible not to let an F-bomb slip out. And then the driver of the other vehicle is liable to respond in kind. Good for you that you keep the bigger picture in mind. Janet is an outstanding reason to be the better man.

Hi mike my biggest fear came true two months ago. I was on my new motorbike with my girlfriend on the back. We were on our way from Bacolod to Dumaguete and decided to stop to turn on my gps. Well my girl moved to on side while my hand were not on the handlebars and we started to go over. When I grabbed the handlebars I got a little gas jumped forward and the bike fell on my knee and really did a lot of damage. I’m back in Denmark at the moment one surgery done and maybe another one to come. Just goes to show how important it is to have a plan I had a go home plan and travel insurance but the hospital would not accept it so burned some cash at the hospital and the got a rescue flight home . What an experience 😢

I travel to many places, and I take extreme safety measures to protect myself in case of being arrested in a foreign land. I get to know my state senators on a personal level, it's not hard to do. I always let these senators know when I'm traveling out of the U.S and supply them with my itinerary and other important information. I promise you my senators would NEVER let me rot in a jail or prison and they assure me they will find all details of why this happened and who was involved. I promise you these senators have access to the higher up politicians in the Philippine government. Keep in mind, your senators work for us, the U.S citizens. I hope this helps

Long-Term Care in the Philippines vs. the United States: A Personal Perspective
As we look ahead to our later years, concerns about long-term care are inevitable. In the United States, the reality is that quality home care or even nursing home options can be incredibly expensive, and often, they leave much to be desired in terms of comfort and quality of life. Many facilities may accept Social Security, but let's be honest-they are not places we would want to spend our final years. It's a tough reality to face, especially when financial resources are limited. My wife’s experience with an aneurysm opened my eyes to the stark difference between care in the U.S. and what might be available abroad. The United States, with all its advancements, can be surprisingly harsh and unaffordable when it comes to caring for the elderly. The idea of getting long-term home care here is almost out of reach unless you're wealthy or well-insured. In contrast, when you think about the Philippines, it's possible to re-engineer a better long-term care plan at a fraction of the cost. Home health care, with multiple people to assist you if necessary, is more affordable and offers a more personalized, compassionate approach than what you typically find in many U.S. nursing homes. It's a place where quality of life doesn't have to be sacrificed due to cost.
I know the fear of being away from familiar surroundings is real, but in terms of health care and peace of mind, the Philippines offers opportunities that are hard to match in the U.S. And with some proper planning, it could be the better option in the long run.

One of the huge benefits of being a SE Asian Slow Traveler is not being a static target for locals. I’m not a reactive impulsive person and my reactivity has been tested many times in the Phillipines. I’m happy to say no matter what so far I am non reactive. I carry doctors kit with me based on my condition in case of anything. I’m very healthy and take care of my health. I chose to come to SE Asia because my boots on the ground medical research showed me I will be 180 degrees better off here after 90 than in the US where care will be $15-20 per month at that time, 3 decades, and I will be isolated and lonely. I have designed a life without marrying where I won’t experience any of that. Great video Mike. Thank you for your efforts. Your channel is so much better than the younger guys just promoting coming to the Philippines and idealizing the Philippines

I feel ya Mike. I'm an expat in Costa Rica, been here for 30 years. I've shared many of these same fears. Now that I'm on social security, and live in a place where there is no postal service, I've learned to download the form, (the proof of life one) fill it out and sign it, and send it in. (We have outbound postal service if I'm willing to drive an hour to get to it.). I found out how to do this the hard way, by having my checks cut off for 4 months. At least when they reinstated me they paid the back checks that I missed. So once every year I send them a form, I have no idea if they requested one or not, but better safe than sorry.

and the neighbours went mental. I am 56 and slim and can outrun a knifeman but cant dodge a bullet. We live in the UK and both in our fifties and I have been to the Philippines 9 times and love it. In the UK I drink Guinness and in the Philippines San Miguel. I never feared for my safety there and someone was shot 1000 yards from her house while I was there last time.

Needing long-term healthcare is a reality unless you are fortunate to die suddenly. Elderly people don’t decline gradually. There is an event that puts you in the hospital for a long period of time and you’ve gone from being able to handle day-to-day tasks to being a semi invalid. Some recover with physical therapy and some don’t.
One attractive thing about Thailand is that they revere the elderly. I don’t know if that’s the same in the Philippines. Cost is lower in both countries, but you can attract very high quality people in Thailand for elder care.

Good video Mike. With regard to your health, It would be a very good idea to get an annual echocardiogram yhat looks at both the heart and carotid arteries. With your comcern regarding strokes, the carotid artery check the cardiologist will determine if you have sny blockages. It is also good to have the annual chemical induced stress test. That will also look at your heart at your maximum heart tate compared to your testing heart rate. I have this done annually and just by coincidence had these tests last Friday. You may have to go to Cebu or Manila for these tests. The most modern equipment is in Thailand. Having these tests annually should help with your fear. Good luck.

Even if you live a healthy life and live beyond your 90s you will still be set in your ways. So the hard part is having someone who will have the patience to take care of you and tolerate you. That's why even in our late years we need to be able to be patient as well and tolerate the new way of things. Otherwise we'll wind up alone.

Did not get upset once until back in the airport in Manila waiting to go home, I’ll tell you they had been 50 people on wheelchairs getting on board ahead of me and others. Jeeze Mike, that's a lot of fears! 😱 I'm your age, and I have been living (if you can call it that) in Mexico the last two years. I've only been back to to the US once, and that was to buy a motorcycle and ride it 4,000 miles back into Oaxaca, Mexico. Since then I have lived in several places, and put thousands of miles on my bike. I now have decided to leave, especially since my reason for being in Mexico has packed her bags and went back to Canada. (never again, a western woman) At our age we do tend to focus on things like that ticking clock of time, and our future. At least you have a solid relationship with Janet to count on. Like you I don’t want to end up in a nursing home pushed into a corner. My intention is to live as full a life as possible before I croak. I don't know what the future will bring, but, I cannot let the possibility of what might happen to decide my future. I'll be looking for you in the next few months, I hope to find you well then.

I think you have to remember that when choosing to live in a place like the Philippines you are choosing adventure over security. And so all these issues you mention are part of having an adventurous life. You have to keep your adventurous mindset. If at some point it seems that the negatives outweigh the positives then it's time to return to safety/comfort snd ditch the adventure. Or adjust your thinking. Many of the issues you mention can be planned for. Eg. Have fire extinguishers and an exit plan, keep documents in a fireproof safe, move closer to hospitals and transport, stop riding a motorbike and get a car with driver or use taxis, lock up your stuff to prevent theft, excercise and eat healthy, plan on getting a live in helper to look after you when you get old, make sure a trusted person has power of attorney for you do they can access your money if you get too confused to get it. Plan plan plan. Lucky to all the people who can afford to retire before retirement age. In the UK that's now 67! So we don't have as many years as you to live abroad and will be so much older when we start the adventure.

Testing costs more than the tank, but BUT, an appropriate place won't refill after that date. I'm only guessing, but I would bet that is not an issue in the Philippines

There are 73 motorcycle accident in the Philippines every day of those 9 people die. You have to be an experienced driver to be safe over here. No stop light,no stop sign and Virtually no enforcement of the driving laws, they do have checkpoints Where they check paperwork and helmets but many times they don’t even stop you. Traffic moves slow over here 40 mph is considered pretty fast and putting up with slow traffic will constantly aggravate you, but you need to adapt, it is there country. There is a Flow to traffic and when get used to it things gets easier. If you are only visiting use public transportation.

There are announced check points for some reason. People with no license or helmets just drive around tjem if possible. If not announcedthe policeman will have a cousin he tells and after that everyone knows. If you want to keep a secret here, do not tell a soul. The people here can not keep from opening their mouths about anything!

One, I'm in US have had a house fire. Amazon has fire blankets, need one for each location, close but far enough away so you don't endanger yourself. I live in country, volunteer fire department, love where I live but I know at some point need to be in city, I'll die from heart attack long b4 VFD can respond. In US, I will never ride cycle again. I drive Lincoln towncar and still, everyone else is driving truck or SUV 3 feet taller. Buy a Uninterruptable power supply for storms. Midwest, South, I'm used to losing power for a day or so. If younare high and dry, you can at least charge phones and know what's going on.
I am thinking about having second home, at the least I would bite the bullet, pay the duties and import fire blankets, CO/smoke detectors, Tesla or Generac power wall

Effective January 1, 2025 our medical insurance premiums will be $1,202.00 per month. We have an 1100 square foot house. Our property tax is $5,700.00 per year. Regardless of what our government says about inflation being under control. It’s a lie. Inflation is very bad here.

I fully understand your health care concerns. I live in the U.S. and just 1 1/2 miles from a world class hospital. Four years ago at 2 am I had a hard time breathing. I woke my wife and told her I had to go to the hospital emergency room. I drove to the hospital. When I stepped out of my car I couldn’t take one step. My wife went inside of the emergency and summoned help. I was taken by wheelchair to the emergency room where I was admitted to the hospital. I was 82 years old at the time. I had double pneumonia and my heart arteries were 90 percent clogged. The surgeon told me before he operated on me “when I operate on you, your kidneys may shut down, you may have a stroke and you may die”. After the open heart surgery my kidneys shut down. I was put on dialysis. Luckily after 3 weeks my kidneys started back. 6 weeks in the hospital and my hospital bills were $450,000. Luckily I have good insurance that paid it all. Just wanted to tell you my story because this is how fast an emergency can happen.

You’re extremely lucky…. Driving oneself to the H is never a good idea to drive yourself because when you walk to the car, you put a load of on your lungs and your heart. The best thing to do is sit down bolt upright call 911 and have them carry you out to the ambulance and to the hospital,
your arteries being 90% clogged usually results in a massive heart attack and you’re very lucky to be alive and that you didn’t have a sudden collapse resulting in a cardiac arrest most cardiac arrest when resuscitation efforts are performed after the age of 70 , the majority of people do not live ,you’re very lucky congratulations.
It’s a lottery win being off of dialysis ,that is a bad life having to go three times a week, but it does keep a person
      Thank you for your story

HI MIKE , This was a good video.
I think the #1 fear I have is the MEDICAL CARE THERE , even in MANILA , unless you live near to a hospital , the traffic or lack of transport can KILL YOU.
Well a few things on the other side of the coin , HERE IN THE USA , YES we DO have good hospitals BUT I have seen traffic where an ambulance CAN NOT GET THRU , a lot is due to people not moving over or no shoulders...
If you follow the new here in USA , THINGS ARE WORSE THAN EVER , I don t mean just the economy but more IMPORTANT IS THE RISE IN CRIME...
    Lastly , FORGET DATING HERE...
I enjoy all your videos , give my best to JANET and be safe.
    GOD BLESS CIAO

Just keep your hands to yourself no matter what, better to get a little roughed up by tolerating some shoving and punching than spending a year or 2 in jail. Also just stay away from the southern part of Mindanao, it has been trouble since the 80's.

Yeah if it wasn't the NPA or the coup attempt it was the Victory liners flying off cliffs or Volcanoes. We had to blow everything on Clark because the ash was so heavy they were afraid the building would fall on the squatters living in them. I look back now and it seems so chaotic, but when I was there it was all just normal.

In 2008, I was visiting the family of my Filipina in the Philippines. My girlfriend lived already many years in Canada. Her piece of land was taken away from her brother without her consent! She did send the tax money and the brother claimed it because “he paid the tax”. Anyway. I got in contact with a lawyer for her. “Well. It’s done. She lives n Canada anyway….” And then he gave me an advice as a foreigner: “YOU HAVE NO RIGHTS IN THE PHILIPPINES. You get into an accident, even if you don’t drive, it’s your fault! Think about that before you decide to move into a country where foreigners have no rights.” That closed the story on retirement in the Philippines for me suddenly. I do live now in Panama. I did buy legally a piece of land under my name. I’m building a house what will be my house. Nobody can take it away from me without my consent. Asia is very nice. For holidays ONLY!
