The same thing happened to me with a leopard print fabric, mine became a skirt and I love it so much! Opening a seam and adding a zip is way too much work just to finish that dress. Keep it in mind for next time but right now, just bite the bullet and sew on those buttons. Give yourself a little treat for each one you do. Also, one of those expanding measuring tools will help with getting the placement right. Figure out the top and bottom ones, and one right at your bust, then you just need to use the expanding tool to place the rest of them. OR, take the dress and buttons to a tailor and have them finish up the buttons and buttonholes. Good luck. Glad you see your sewjo is returning.

Just do the buttonholes Angela, that seems easier to me than unpicking the side seam and putting in a zip 🤫. Love the double gauze fabric, that will be a stunning blouse. Glad you are getting back to wanting to sew. I think it's all weather related. How can you imagine it ever being warm after such a long winter and wearing anything other than a big jumper lol 😆

I am with you on double gauze except for loungewear/pyjamas but that white border print is a game changer- I love it 😍. Leopard print- why not? No-one to please except you. 😊 Happy Sewing. Lynne

Hi Angela. I have made the Tilda blouse. It is a lovely sew. The pattern didn't give finished garment measurements so I went with the size I thought it should be but it is still a little big but does fit over my high bust well. I made it with cotton fabric but it was a bit more structured than your double gauze so should be lovely. The gathering over the sleeve head isn't too big so won't be too puffy. Can't wait to see your finished one. If I get chance I'll put mine on and get a picture on Instagram and let you know, so you can see it.
By the way. If you don't like doing the button holes on your dress, do enough to allow you to get it on then sew up the rest of the placket and just put buttons in it. If you have buttons with holes you can sew them on your sewing machine, something I like to do
    Good luck

New subscriber here. That white fabric would be gorgeous as a Tilda blouse. The pleats would be so beautiful. I made it with a patterned fabric and now want to do it in a plain, particularly white. My sleeves turned out fine. That edging is divine. Just be careful as my Tilda turned out longer than I expected and after a couple of wearing I've decided I'm going to shorten it. You won't be able to do that if you want that beautiful scallop on display. Can't wait to see how yours turns out, Bláthnaid.

For the apron: I love that fabric that looks brown with an interesting white dot pattern. Just because you have black fabric with kitchen items dotted around on it doesn't mean you should wear it as an apron LOL. That brownish fabric looks chic to me and totally would look amazing as an apron. For the pretty green dress: If you sew for pleasure and you hate to sew buttons and buttonholes, take it to a tailor and have them do it. Don't waste another second of your precious free time on it. Others below also have good ideas - partial buttons to the waist or maybe poppers. Just give yourself permission to not do the dreary buttons and move on. It's the joy of being an adult! You're the boss of you! All the best; I love your channel and your sunny vibe. 🌞

New subscriber here. Your personality lifts my spirits. I'm a quilter, not a fashion sewist, but I am interested in it. For the apron, I wouldv pick the food fabric. Seems most appropriate. And this may be totally off the mark for your dress button dilemma, but how about doing a partial (2 -3) actual buttons at the bust/waist area to give you enough room to pull it over your head, and sew the rest closed like you wanted?. I love the animal print skirt. The double gauze fabric chat gave me a laugh. I was literally thinking that ,just as you said then why did you buy it😂?. Enjoy whatever you decide to sew. You seem very talented.

Hi Angela. I am not much of a buttonhole fan either. I have made quite a few dresses with poppers instead of buttons and they look great and sooo much easier and quicker. I think the zip would take so long to do, I'd rather do buttons than unpick etc. As for the apron, yes the kitchen fabric for the win! Look forward to seeing that leopard print skirt. I want one now! 😊 Lisa x 🇦🇺

What about sewn in snaps instead of buttons? Alice said she completely agrees with you about the buttons 😂
Fabulous fabrics. This leopard print is just fantastic
Re apron, I would go with fabric with dots. Kitchen utensils one would be good for doing pot holders/mittens or something like that.

I’m not a huge fan of buttonholes either but I love the foot for sewing the buttons on 😂. My buttonhole foot has hissyfits for no good reason but I grit my teeth just so I can then get out my lovely button sew-on foot and get all the buttons sewn on beautifully in no time at all! That said, I’ve made four button-up blouses in the last couple of weeks and my button-hole foot hated the fabric of one of them so much that I only managed two functional buttonholes - one unpicked twice - before just sewing the rest of the buttons through both plackets and I pull it on over my head! It was such a relief to finally give up on the last of the buttonholes.

The green dress is gorgeous .I would make the buttonholes and buttons. You can buy a sewing foot to sew on buttons and for placement buy the expanding buttonhole tool . If you decide on a side zip don't forget to sew it on the opposite side of your dominant hand. I would use the kitchen tool fabric for an apron. You should, definitely, donate fabric to your sister. I loved the border of the double gauze.Have you thought of pinning the pattern pieces together and see if they fit?You can leave one side open so you don't damage the pattern. You seem much more positive, sewing wise, than you have been. Your daughters dress is going to look amazing.

Hello Angela. The green dress is beautiful and what I suggest for it is to ask HELEN 😊 to do the buttons and buttonholes! The white double gauze fabric is beautiful and would make such a gorgeous summer skirt. I don't blame you for losing your 'sewjo' I am over weight at the moment (thanks to Type 1 diabetes and insulin) and I was planning to make these garments which is more suitable for the warmer weather (and we are heading for winter here in Australia), so I am just going to make some garments for the cooler weather and when I have lost weight and we are approaching summer then I will make garments for summer (and boy, do I have fabric to make them...). Happy sewing.

Hi from Australia. This is my first ever comment so here goes….for the blouse, have a look at the Itch to Stitch Seychelles top. This has a simple pleat detail on the sleeve but is otherwise unfussy so would be a good one to show off that lovely border detail.

I’m the same with buttonholes but my reason for hating them is because my machine just doesn’t cope with them well, it’s a basic Janome and I would love to upgrade but don’t know where to start. Please don’t take the dress apart, it’s beautiful, the pain of doing the buttonholes will be worth it when you can wear it. You have some lovely fabrics and plans, can’t wait to see what you make. I agree with you about buttons. I don't make anything with buttons, and I certainly wouldn't put them down an entire dress. That sounds like torture. Plus I don't like the bother of unbuttoning and buttoning when I'm wearing a garment. How bad would it be to just stick that invisible zipper down the center front 🤷😄 or if you just need a little extra room, maybe you can take it out of the seam allowance on the center and the sides so you can have a pullover dress. Or instead of buttons all the way down, Maybe you can sew most of it up and then just have a few buttons at the top. I'm sure you will figure out something great. The fabric looks lovely, and I could just picture you wearing it on a summer day.

Oh Angela I am so with you with not liking double gauze, I've tried to like it and made 3 garments but end up hating the finished results. HOWEVER I am not surprised you couldn't resist that white fabric ❤. Re buttonholes, like you I am not a fan and wish they were the first thing you had to do rather than the last when all you want to do is finish up 😂. Plus you can do everything perfectly and then you get a buttonhole mess up and it's the end of the world 😅. Having said all that my new machine with the extra metal plate under the foot makes it so much easier 👏🏼. Thanks for sharing your plans and purchases ❤

Hi Angela. I love your videos and your makes are always lovely. With regard to the dress and buttons, I'd like to make a suggestion. You could sew up the front of the skirt part to a point where you can get the dress on over your head. You then might only need to do 3 or 4 buttonholes but you can still put buttons all the way down the front. Practice the buttonholes on a piece of scrap and I think you'll be fine. Regards

I have only just gone back to garment sewing, so I am probably not the best at making suggestions for the button issue on your green floral dress. However, could you make, say, three real buttonholes (sufficient to get the dress on), then sew the remainder of the placket closed and then sew the buttons on the top. I know it would mean sewing buttons, but at least you don't have to mess around with making the buttonholes. Apologies if that is a bit bonkers. LOL

You do make me laugh, I would suggest you face your fears and sew buttonholes and sew on your buttons, otherwise we limit ourselves as there are some lovely blouses and dresses out there, not to mention some fantastic buttons! Why not talk to Ruan, she loves sewing buttonholes so what’s her secret ❤ xx
Also I don’t like double gauze for day wear, I made a cream/white blouse and the colour did nothing for me. I think we need to get back to wearing more colour, which I’m sure will lifts our spirits.
Love the idea of charity fabric donations, such a great idea.
Good luck with your other plans xx

You should use both fabrics and make an apron for you and one for John! Why not put a working button at the waist and fixed buttons on the rest of the dress? The Tilda would be beautiful for that fabric! The animal print skirt would even be great in the fall with black/brown boots and a black or brown jumper !

Putting a side zip in that dress would be too far for me a l hate zips as much as buttonholes😆Have you thought of snaps? I use these quite often and there are lots of types. You do need the tool or pliers though.
I think the Tilda blouse with the neck pleats may not be the best choice in double gauze. Just my opinion but think they may be hard to get a sharp pleat.
I’m attempting to get ready for a sewing retreat but as my room is in such a mess I keep losing things I need😳 so I’m a bit frustrated with myself to be honest. xx

How about tacking the dress together top and bottom to see if you can get it on with just a few “real” buttons around your waist. Then you could sew most of the buttons on through two layers, and just have three or so functional buttons with buttonholes in the middle? Just an idea, but I’m with you on the buttonhole dread! Especially when it’s a finished project, the prospect of ruining it is just too heartbreaking!

If it's a full button front, then the first button at 3/8 " or 1 cm and the second button should be at your fullest part of your bust, then measure the whole opening and see if you can divide it equally if yes then follow through.I generally fit at least one button between neck and bust. I sometimes have to fudge the placement so that it looks ok. I also practice buttons on scrap fabric. I used to have a Pfaff machine which required I turn it off between button holes, newer machines are much easier. This sounds harder than it really is. Your news a about your foot was great news and I hope it continues to behave.

You are funny! As much as I detest sewing buttonholes and buttons too, I don’t know if it would be more work to unpick the side seam and insert that invisible zip!!?? 😂
I hate double gauze too, but that is very pretty. Just bare in kind that gauze stretches with wear so if you make a toile of that blouse, you might not get the same for anyway!?
I’m also not a fan of leopard print hut that colourway is gorgeous and will suit that frugal pattern you used xx

I hate buttons and buttonholes too would much prefer doing a zip. I always use poppers instead of buttons if I can’t use a zip 😂😂 i don’t like double gauze either I’m not a fan of the feel when wearing it either!!

Do the buttons and buttonholes on the dress!! Get it over with. Zipper, unpicking, still having to finish the front??? Your buttonhole foot will be already on the machine from Amy's dress. You can do it...and then you can wear it.

The zip solution sounds risky, send the dress to a seamstress somewhere like the zipyard if you have them in England.......why not if you hate doing them, no shame😅

re dress why not only put buttonholes on above the waist and do what kara suggested below the waist and do just buttons and sew up the join, that way you will be limiting the number of buttonholes you need to do just a thought. lovely fabric 🙂

Have you got a button sewing foot for your machine? It makes the job so much quicker the dress really needs to be finished it’s a shame to make more work for yourself by putting in a zip
