Great share. Log homes are constantly shifting, shrinking and swelling, therefore there will always be caulking issues to be addressed. The solution is to stay on top of it by doing annual inspections and making repairs as necessary. It doesn't take long and most people can do it themselves or you can hire a professional to do it. Just make sure it gets done before any real damage occurs and you are faced with some real expense of replacing damaged logs or other woodwork.

.We weren't told of the maintenance these took when we got our kit. They left all the caulking and staining to us.Didn't know about backer rod when we caulked.8 years later all the seams are pulled apart, caulk looks terrible, stain faded out.Wanted to start all over so i could maintain it properly, called in a company for an estimate and about keeled over.$37,000 dollars to cob blast caulk and stain! Will to take years to get back into shape.People need to learn about time and $ investment of log.

Very helpful video! Some of the corner joints in our milled log cabin have larger gaps. I have stuffed pieces of backer rod into these gaps to fill them until flush with the edge of the wood. Do I need to staple additional pieces of backer rod over these seams (as you did on the long wall seams) before I apply the caulking or can I apply the caulking directly on to the filled seam?

In Finland they would just hammer ferns into the gap. Blunt chisel, hammer, fist full of ferns.
Assuming you can source the fist, ferns and blunt chisel for free, you only have to pay for the hammer.
A rock would work instead of the hammer.

Does your Conceal caulk have tiny particles so when you smear it with your finger it matches woodgrain?

Our home is 16 years old. 6" D-Style. The seam joints are pretty tight. Should I still use a backer rod? Meaning these logs have already shrunk as much as they are going to?

I know what you mean, but this is one of the worst ways to build a log home. The logs are very badly split and they are leaving the build to what are usually unprofessional people who may work in an office.
much better to use larger newer logs and they can then be fitted together precisely, NOT the terrible way this cabin was done, there is very little strength in these types of cabin, but the exact opposite in a properly build chinless build, I have seen builds where I am pretty sure

I understand what you do if that is what you say fair enough.
Unless people in America have more money than sense well, I really am gobsmacked they would lay out almost 40000 dollars for something that is only the basics of a building.
I think if anyone did not think ANY home would need maintenance at some time they are absolutely in ga ga land. Any home even a Palace needs maintenance. Unless these are professionally built they will end up as little better than trailers without wheels

Unfortunately, the way these kits are sold, basically like a lego home for you to assemble just you want should be against the Law.
You need a whole lot more knowledge about water levels, and just general building before ever buying a so called kit like this, which is nothing apart from some logs. I doubt they mentioned anything about drainage, and or Water Tables, foundations and insulation, and heating and window installing? They will say anything to sell what is little more than logs.
