i always found it odd, the philosophers who admit to knowing nothing, then proceed to tell us all they think they know. they say "i know nothing. but i know this!" then plato goes on to call love "a serious mental disease." then calls love "the greatest of heaven's blessings." is he saying mental illness is a blessing from god? is he contradicting himself? i think he's refering to two kinds of love. romatic love can manifest itself as a mental illness. it often makes us do the craziest and stupidest things. but social love, a universal love, a love for your species and fellow humans, is a productive love. the antithesis of the destruction caused by hate. tolerance and cooperation comes from love while exclusion and cut-throat competition comes from greed, corrupt self-interest and hate. so he's saying social love is productive and a heavenly blessing. while romantic love is a mental disease that can lead to jealousy, possessivness and conflict.
