I was reading Seneca's "Of Anger" last night and I found this quote very evocative:
'Plato was about to strike his servant, and while his hand was in the air, he checked himself, but still held it in that menacing posture. A friend of his took notice of it, and asked him what he meant? “I am now,” says Plato, “punishing of an angry man;” so that he had left his servant to chastise himself.'
What a display of discernment and self-control, to check yourself in that situation and recognize you are the one who needs to be punished for having let your anger persuade you.

Seneca is rich. Stoicism is a mental therapy.

"You are a little soul carrying about a corpse, as Epictetus used to say."
As for proof, one only need to seek within. Who is the 'I' that exists in all three states of waking, dream and dreamless sleep?

As one of one of the first quotes we can be the most savage of animals if we are not careful. Maybe even worse than any other primate as we so often choose worse than a ape.

@@truepremise2053 I disagree. I don't think Norse mythology covers nearly as much ground as the Greeks and the Roman philosophers. There's certainly value in the Norse, but it's more anecdotal and story driven which, for me, makes it shallower. Out of curiosity, what baggage do you think comes with philosophy?
