Hawaiians need to start using the USA Flag.
You guys aren't helping the local kids growing up in Hawaii by spreading the false notion that they're not apart of the USA and/or that one day Hawaii will be it's own country. This has negative affects on young Hawaiians and they grow up with hatred towards mainland USA. You guys are idols and role models in their eyes and should be promoting American Pride so that they grow up wanting to be a proud American; a country where people from all over the world, fight tooth and nail to come to, so that they can make a better living and future for themselves and their family.
Also you guys need to have some respect for the men and women (both islanders and mainlanders) who've died for this country and whos' death paved the way for you to have a very privileged life of being a professional surfer. Wearing the USA flag doesn't represent war, it represents their sacrifice, including the 2403 people who died at Peral harbor.
If you want to represent the Hawaiian flag on one sleeve then that's fine but Hawaii is a part of the USA. Stop segregating Hawaii from the USA, it's bad for everybody, especially local children. You guys need to teach them that it's a good thing and a privilege to be an American.
Unite the world, don't divide it.
Hawaii is apart of the American Ohana and I'm proud to say that the Kanaka and Keiki of Hawaii are my fellow countrymen.
And don't even get me started on Kanoa Igarashi... Bro... You parents left Japan for the reasons stated above. You don't even exist in the world of surfing without having had the privilege's of growing up in the USA. I get that every 4 years you want a shot at getting an Olympic Gold medal and by wearing the Japanese Flag, that gives you a easy foot in the door, but let's be honest, you're taking a true Japanese Citizen's spot by doing that and you're showing fear towards competing against other Americans Surfers (like yourself) for a qualifying spot in the Olympics. The Japanese Samurai way is Loyalty, Respect, and No Fear; you're not representing that by wearing a Japanese flag, you're only choosing self-interest and displaying fear of true competition. You're an American whether you like it or not and you're 100% good enough to qualify for the American Olympic Team, they should fear you taking their spot, not you fearing them; that's the Bushido Way. Show honor towards the Japanese surfers who were born and raised in Japan; that's the Bushido Way.
