This games was *THE* reason I sold my Atari 7800 along with my 30 something games I had along with mowing my neighbors 2 acre yard in the 100F Texas summer heat so I could scroung up enough dough to buy a NES. As soon as I saw this game on display at Wal-Mart I was hooked. I used to wait until my parents went to bed and then snuck out into the living room to play for another hour or two. The shiny gold cartridge was big pimping back then too. :) (Edited to fix Atari console model number)
surfingthechaos Oops, that was a typo. I had the Atari 7800 that was released around 1986 or 87. Good catch! It was backwards compatible with my all my 2600 games.
It was Christmas of 1987. I was 9-years old. I was with my mom as she argued with the sales clerk at Radio Shack for the last copy of the game since it was sold out at Toys R' Us. Ah, such memories.
i remember when my mom was going through her old stuff when she brought an old nes out and let us play with it. I was around 13, I'm 22 now and I have it and play it occasionally. I don't want it to get ruined, it's a relic
The truly amazing thing about all of this is that the three themes of overworld and two labyrinths never get old even though you're forced to hear them over and over again.
I started playing video games when I was about 2 years old with my dad, and this and Mario are the first games I ever remember. This game is very special to me. I still remember the day me and my dad discovered Link to the Past in the rental store and we couldn't believe there was a Zelda for SNES. I was about 3 and a half at that time and my little brain exploded.
I also miss the days when background music was the norm in games. They could do so much with today's MP3s too. I guess today's game's ambient sound effects make sense and are more realistic... but I think the constant music from the 8 and 16 bit era are a lot of why I often have headphones in my ears in real life these days!
This takes me back to recording these songs with a tape recorder pressed to the speakers and then wearing out the tapes. Probably why I love techno music now :)
I would my original Nintendo would stop erasing my game so I can actually finish this one! XD I remember the good ol days when my sister and I would draw maps of the world on graph paper. Love this
My battery has never died on me, i still have the saves from when i was a kid and didn't finish the game :P I never beat it as a child, however i managed to beat Zelda II several times.
Suggestion: for some of the games that have short tracks, because they loop quickly, you should create longer versions, at least 2 to 3 minutes, especially for very addicting tracks like Zelda or Metroid that we'll never get sick of. I'm not saying do this for every game, just certain ones. I'm sure most of us would be very okay with a good 20 minute LoZ complete soundtrack made up of extended tracks. Remember, many of us like to have this on in the background while doing other stuff.
Thanks for the reply. Yeah. I played it (and got quite far in a Link to the Past and beat Link's Awakening on the Game Boy too). I admit I never finished the original on the NES, but I guess I hoped the dungeons would all have their own themes or something. Turtles 3 had over 24 minutes!
This game was Epic! Even that stupid commercial with the guy running around acting scared of all the creatures in the game made me want to buy it and when I finally got it I spent month's trying to beat it. This is one of my all time favorite games. Some people hate on it, I don't get why? Was it because it was hard like a game should be? The music takes me back! Thanks
Jeremy Kelley True, but back then I didn't know any better except to just keep trying until I beat them. I've beat so many NES games my friends use to come to me for answers. I used to want to be one of those game counselors who players would call on the phone with questions when I grew up lol but then the internet happened and all that went away. Metroid was my first game I ever got and I played that thing for about 8 months before I finally beat it. I would blame that game for my gaming addiction to this day. Those NES games being hard is my favorite thing about them.

@@matthewstone2545 Sorry, I just found that funny for some reason. Now here's funny piece of advice given during the game: DIGDOGGER HATES CERTAIN KIND OF SOUND.

It actually kind of sounds like this in the Famicom Disk System version. I would highly recommend that version, it has an overall more pleasant sound, and the "you found a secret!" jingle is really beautiful there.
Years. YEARS it took for me to beat this. I think when I got to the labyrinth with all the Wizzrobes I just could not handle it when I was younger. I remember having to grind for rupees just to go buy medicine and a magic shield, then I'd enter the labyrinth and just get absolutely slaughtered. Felt good once I finally beat the whole thing.
On my cart It saved items but not tri-force pieces and it got tedious AF to redo the dungeons. Mine was apparently faulty cus I made a similar comment elsewhere many years back and that was confirmed.
Only downside I can see is halfway through the "Start" screen, the treble and bass switch ears, which will make it a little harder to learn to play this, but at least they're separated so I can learn it on my keyboard. Thanks.
WiiGuys 8BitStereo a NES CLASSIC has been released that plays 30 different NES games, and 2-3 retroware consoles, which actually USE the original cartridges, have been released as well. Do you happen to know if the sound channels on ANY of these consoles are split? If the left and right sound channels are merged, like in the original American NES, I'd like to know.
The Legend of Zelda became a popular franchise. The only Zelda games that I own are A Link to the Past (Super Nintendo Entertainment System) Twilight Princess (Nintendo Wii) Breath of the Wild (Nintendo Switch)
So effectively, this entire game has only 126 seconds of actual unique music for most of the game (Overworld + Labyrinth). It seemed like so much more when I was 10. But....my poor parents. It's a wonder they didn't go mad hearing the repetition. Oh. Now I know why they didn't resist me putting the NES on the ancient TV in the basement....
Your media fire link tryna give people a virus, that "Your flash player is out of date" yeah, well, I don't have Flash Player on my Mac and that interface is Windows. Just fyi. Might want to host it somewhere else.
Of course it's a brilliant soundtrack. It's just funny how some things are considered sacred by retro gaming audiences, of which I'm a part. Saying the soundtrack to LOZ classic is poor is like saying, "I don't like Mega Man." It's simply not accepted.

The intro is soooooo EPIC.
"It's dangerous to go alone. Take this." 🗡
If I had the possibility to create my own country, I would choose the overworld theme as the national anthem. It's so perfect for that

Quite possibly the best game ever made. My childhood rocked because of this game. Dad and I played the hell out of it.
