Johan is such a fascinating villain, the mystery surrounding him truly elevated Monster as a work of storytelling genius. It's an incredible series unlike any other anime I've ever seen.
I love this video but i wish you would have talked a little more about johan getting shot by the "drunk". It was so thematically pleasing that this useless drunk who was resented by his son, killed johan for the sake of his son. It is such a cruel way to rob johan of his perfect death, but its so fitting. Love and embrace from a parent is what he never receieved and ultimately led to his death. Not to mention the fact that he saw tenma as a parent, so he basically gave him the same choice as his mother. Would he choose johan or would he kill him for the sake of others? However, just like he never got the answer on who his mom really wanted to give up, that answer was also taken away from him
0:07 I never understood why people consider Johan a “realistic” villain. His abilities come off as more supernatural than the death note and Geass power (which is not a good thing for a story that’s supposed to be grounded in reality). How does Johan do the things he does? How did he poison the candy for example? I know it’s left to the viewers imagination but you atleast need some explanation for some stuff? Every impossible thing he does is all offscreen, except for a very minimal amount of scenes (and those scenes are mostly him shooting or him doing the last step such as Burning something). He also somehow manages to be everywhere and be a part of literally every case that is happening at every point in time. Johan is literally omnipresent for no reason whatsoever and somehow just happens to be in every situation. I don’t think even Urasawa knows how Johan does these things. Urasawa wrote a character smarter than himself with Johan and played the "smart and charismatic card" all too often. There's a lot of things to appreciate about Monster, but for a story that's so grounded, Johan gets to pull off some rather blatant cheat cards and noticing this always makes me laugh on re-watch. Keeping him from getting too much spotlight helps with that a little bit, admittedly, since we're mostly following Tenma. Speaking of Tenma, I honestly found him and Johan, who are the two most important characters in the story, to be the least interesting alongside Nina. Grimmer, Lunge, and Eva (after her development) were my favourites. I liked Martin too.
I can see a lot of similarities with the dark knight's joker. Again another movie praised for being realistic. I like both characters as villains but they are not realistic. Both Johan and the Joker seem to be able to predict the future for them to successfully pull of their plans.

Watched this series start to finish while I had a bad cold over a decade ago, and the most terrifying scene from that series for me was when Johan was compared to Hitler. The character explaining it to Tenma (can't remember the speaker's name, sorry, it's been awhile) said that while Hitler became a monster into his later 30s, Johan was raised to be a monster from BIRTH. His potential for chaos among humanity would be far, far worse than what Hitler could ever achieve. Johan could manipulate people like a walk in a park, and almost anyone could become his plaything to do so as he pleased. He was given the potential to END humanity. I always wondered if that's what Johan wanted others to see with such desperation: a perfect doomsday, the end of all human life on earth through war, tragedy, and death. Then he'd truly become the character at the end of that children's story, a monster with no one remaining to call him by his name.

Monster still holds up till this day
Johann's presence in the show always evoked unease whenever he showed up, I never feel that way about any character in any media, it was just.. he felt so.. dark
Y’all like the video, we need an analysis on “Friend” 👽
Totally agree, he's up there with Griffith. Thank you for bringing light to a character (and especially, a SERIES that is soooo underrated and unappreciated (most people want corporate fucking predictable trash. i remember when i got LAUGHED AT for liking anime. but now? I was ahead of the curve. Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Fist of the Northstar.... and eventually was led to BERSERK and Inhabitant of Infinity, or the English Translation, which I think is much better: BLADE OF THE IMMORTAL.)
Monster then Pluto then 20th then billy is objectively correct. great taste bro
Thank you for the vid Mr. Mexican ;)
Monster is one of my fav anime and in media in general.
in the light novel it was stated that he has rebuilt his life, so in a way Johan redeemed himself after being proven wrong
This is by far best representation of any character I have ever seen....
Great video
Bought the first two volumes of monster perfect edition over 3 weeks back. Was busy with some work and exams. Will start the first volume today.
P.S- already completed the anime 10 years back, suggested it to 5-6 friends (both serious and non serious otakus), everyone loved it.
Entertaining video. What is the piano music you used at 10:06 ? I'd love to use it in a video of my own, great watch!

"The Greatest Villain Ever In Anime And Manga Until Next Week When I Need A Clickbait Title Again"

lol I’m glad someone is calling him out on it. Seriously he really needs to stop the clickbait titles because it’s getting annoying.
