Feedback on Devoro I make manga, so I'm going to focus into technical stuff and talking. Short and sweet notes Pro : I love the astetic, gives me bloodborne and cosmic horror vibes. The art can be hyper detailed and beautiful, Panel structures are for the post part standard making them easy to follow, I love the undead horse and some of the passive world building was interesting and made me wanna know more. Con : I know art style is subjective, but this was my biggest complaint. I literally got a headache trying to read this thing as it goes from hyper detailed to more simplicist along with the deep black sometimes blending the two made it hard on the eyes. Too much fighting and not enough worldbuilding/character development. Detailed *ART* First off with the art style, I know your artist is talented and that's clear by the hyper detailed sections and expressions. But, I feel this story doesn't know what style it wants to be at times, and as such it gives off a very inconsistent vibe which reviewers and even some of my own community agree with after asking them to read. Sometimes the MC will have detailed hair in close up shots, sometimes he doesn't, normally we go high detail when a big show piece shot is does to really make a panel/page stand out, but it feels random when things are detailed and not. I don't know if this is an artist thing or an art direction thing that you control, but it feels like there is a disconnect. Character and creature designs are amazing, love the theme you picked and stuck with it. Really helps this series stand out. Like the bridge lady, LOVE HER, and the way she lowers the bridge, amazing design work! It's these shots that make it feel like the team was on the same page and knocking it out the park. *Lettering* For the most part, it was servicing the story. I would caution you on some overlapping page two "We can handle more", it forces the reader to move down and left to right, when the format is right to left. By doing this you are creating a disconnect in how the reader should be naturally scrolling across the page.Another example is "Da**. I already..." with the door, it goes into pnl 3, which naturally calls to the reader to bypass pnl 2. The lettering of the word "SLAM" is hard to read. I play with distortion alot with SFX, but number 1 priority is to always go for readability. With the smoking lady, either commit to making the word balloon made of smoke or not, it feels off that only the word balloon tail is smoke and the rest is just normal like the rest. Some SFX are PERFECTLY done like the horse, splat and Krrrnch, perfect. *Less Combat and More Talking* As several others have mentioned, your fight scene is cool, but we don't know enough about the character, why they're doing anything, to care about their survival. We're not attached to this character, so what does it matter if they die? *Final Thoughts* My main concern is that since chapter 0 (As the 1st chapter) is the most important chapter in manga/comics, and will be the decision point to many readers as to whether they will continue the story. I worry that too much emphasize was put into the art, rather than creating a compelling hook that attaches the readers to the initial cast of characters. I see the talent here, but as a reader, I'm curious if the chapter could be improved to help encourage readers to keep going into chapter 1 (Second Chapter of the series). Note : I hope you don't take any of this as rude. As a fellow manga writer, I know how important feedback is, so I wanted to be as detailed as I could with this. If you need clarification on any points, or want me to look at anything else let me know. Also as a sign of good faith, I'm not above critique as well and I welcome any feedback you have on any of my 3 series, cause I too can always improve as a writer.
Obviously you’re just making it now but i have to wonder if you’re going to make it physically as well. I just read it and I’m basically in love with it now can’t wait for the next chapter
Griffith solidified being one of my most hated characters in media when he "did the deed" to Casca just to spite an already heartbroken and tired Guts. And that's not even counting the backstabbing he did to his entire crew.
Personally what I find hardest-hitting is the way Griffith/Femto ruthlessly stares Guts down during the act. The saddest thing was the way Casca told Guts to look away; even as she is being violated, her love for Guts shines through. On some level, Casca knew Griffith was harming her to hurt the person she loved, and in the only way she could, she wanted to protect Guts from yet another psychological scar. If that isn't pure love, I don't know what is.
@@Doktor_dooom That comes from a misunderstanding about reactions to sexual assault. Casca reached orgasm while being raped. IRL, this is a thing that happens and does cause very real mental trauma. Rapists use the orgasm as another layer of abuse; the victim O'd, ergo they "wanted it". In reality of course we recognize this as another layer of violation, manipulation, and even justification with a victim's own body causing great distress to the victim. Casca may have O'd. But that is in no way an indication that "she wanted it".
precisely. he was a born leader of men and destined for greatness we just dislike the kind of greatness he choose to achieve and his methods in doing so.
Love is not the opposite of hate, but it's cause. If you truly didn't love or care for the person, their actions would not pain you so much that you feel hate.
Tbh he replaced them with wings ability to move (lost his cords in the torture ) ability to speak( tongue been cut) a new body strong one at that power and influence
Aside from the eclipse, there was one more thing that really made me hate Griffith. As the series went on, my hatred for the guy simmered down a bit, mainly because guts wasn’t chasing him. He was trying to escort casca to puck’s home in the hopes of pulling her out of her regression. By this point, guts had made a shit ton of new friends and companions he could rely on and travelled with. When they eventually make it to elf island, Farnese and shierke are the ones who help put casca’s fractured psyche back together. And for the first time in like 200 chapters, casca talks. She’s finally been made whole. This made me so happy. She goes to see guts. After so long, she can finally be with him again, she’s excited, heart pounding in joy. She sees him in the distance, she’s so happy AND THEN……..The memories flood back. She sees guts, and once again, she’s brought back to the eclipse. Once again, she is utterly helpless as her friend and mentor violated her. She once again sees how helpless guts was, desperately trying to reach her, even maiming himself, but to no avail. She remembers pip and judo. And she breaks down and screams. Griffith had taken so much from guts and casca in one day. And now because of him, casca can’t even look at her lover without breaking down in fear and panic. That shit made me so unbelievably angry and sad. I love berserk.
@@Dischingo, that question is certainly a theme in the later chapters of berserk, but definitely catch up because that question is imo definitively answered. Very sweet but sad too.
Something I love about Griffith and Guts as a dynamic is that both of them have similar wounds. Both of them have been sexually exploited and they’re both trying to bury it. Guts isn’t able to bury it forever and eventually after getting closer to Casca, he fully lets out his pain piece by piece . But Griffith is almost an example of what happens if you continue to bottle it up. Just like how he’s the opposite of Guts in every way, he’s also the complete opposite of guts in their methods of healing from trauma. As the story continues after the eclipse, you watch Guts slowly heal himself and become more open to expressing his feelings and making friends again. Griffith on the other hand is slowly turning into his idea of God and making himself so large in the minds of everyone around him, that it’ll be impossible for him to ever get back down to earth again, and heal himself like Guts especially because he’s actively caused wounds for everyone around him. Griffith is not only evil, but the direct opposition to healing pain, which is the personal journey of the everyone in story to begin with.
Funny enough this kinda reminded me of that Marvel comic where Elric of Melnibone met Conan the Barbarian through a dimensional rifts. It basically proto-Berserk, given the fact that Miura was inspired by Elric of Melnibone.
@@YogurtNight_ Yeah in the end of the comic Elric indirectly caused the death one of Conan lover during their battle against Elric evil Chaos worshipping aunt, Conan sworn he will slay Elric and Elric went full poetic on Conan that if they ever meet again one shall slain the other and leave. Elric of Melnibone was the inspiration for the dark fantasy genre like Dark Elves, Drow, edgelord in dark armor, The Witcher, Warhammer universe, duality between Chaos and Order, Dungeon and Dragons. Elric owned an evil demon sword called stormbringer that one day will bring the end of the world and had will of its own, Elric is basically Guts if Guts had Griffith body, handsome face and long hair and a insufferable poet instead of depressed Conan.
A song about a man committing the most unforgivable act to someone that was closest to him during the part where Griffith is about to commit an unforgivable act to those that were closest to him.
i never really rocked with Griffiths dream of wanting to become a king was a selfish dream about obtaining power. Never once does he ever state that he wants to be a king for any altruistic purpose. He simply wanted to be a king because he wanted to be a king and any good fortune that fell onto others or the world as byproduct of his dream was completely secondary or inconsequential to him.
This is why i couldn't get into game of thrones. It's just a bunch of rich assholes killing each other for power. Why? Are any of them actually going to make the people's lives better? That's the only question that actually matters, and it's never even discussed
@32BitJunkie that's one of the reasons I loved Game of Thrones so much is that it shows the nobility as the power hungry and ultimately terrible greedy selfish pieces of crap that most of them have been throughout history. In my youth I read a lot and I had this idea that princes and princesses and kings, emperors etc. Were mostly good or at least they were a representation of their people and acted in the entire kingdoms interests and not just their own but.... turns out that is rare. Game of Thrones would have lost a huge amount of appeal if it showed these people as something they have never really been.
@@32BitJunkie Fuck you mean, it was the whole point of Daenerys' character. She was meant to be the "good" ruler, while others fought for power itself. Then she was killed because she misused that power, even if she had good intentions, her goal didn't justify the means.
The reason I hate Griffith is because I loved him pre-eclipse. Even when he had a temper tantrum when Guts left and screwed his crew by sleeping with the princess. I thought he could be redeemed. We know that's not the case.
I saw him cracking I forgot which arc, but when he started getting more and more unstable I had a feeling something bad would happen from his actions. Turns out I underestimated what he would do lol
Griffith is literally loved by gay closeted guys And chicks who are obsessed over the feminine prince charming ideology. Every other person liked GUTS because he represents normal masculinity and hated Griffith because he's gay he looks gay Dresses gay Acts gay And sells himself gayly. The only people who love Griffith are chicks and people who want what he is selling. Any normal man would say the same thing and any sketch like man would say the opposite .
@@enriqueperezarce5485 I guess you didn't get the hint when the Nosferatu demon saw his talisman and let him be. Or explicitly told Guts exactly what his fate would be.
I think Griffith not wanting Guts to leave has a lot of reason behind it. Without a doubt, Guts carried them through so many of their battles, even moreso than Griffith himself. To lose someone who is not only your closest friend, but by far your most valuable tool, would be devastating.
Especially because Guts is the one thing in his life that he can't control. He constantly tried to put it in Guts' head that they were meant to be together forever but none of it worked.
@classydays43 Guts would've gladly stayed if griffith didn't run his mouth trying to be cool and saying that real friends can't follow their friend's dream. Guts overheard that and ddid exactly what needed to be done to be considered Griffith'ss ffriend. So literally griffith was his own arch-enemy.
@@draakoss1492 What makes it more tragic is Griffiths might have just been posturing for the princess then... and then again, that might have been honesty too.
@@hariman7727 I think it was a bit of both. He meant what he said at the time, but when the reality of losing Guts hits him, he realizes he needs him and truly did view him highly, and that's what kicked off his downward spiral.
Zodd said that once Griffith's ambition falls, a death will come which none can escape. Meaning that all the torture he endured wasn't his low point, if it was then the behelit would have gotten to him since it was an act of fate. It was only realizing that Guts can never be his that he loses it. Knowing the man he loved and the girl he saved and mentored were closer together without him broke him. His act of selfish hatred came from a place of emotion. He was always so cold and distant but at the same time stoic and determined. Griffith only showed his true emotions to Casca when he was sleeping with a man for war funds, and Guts when helped him get rid of the queen and Julius. Considering Griffith was always smart, calculated, stoic and determined to a single goal it's a massive character development for him to let emotions course his path instead of his strategic planning. The two people he loved dear didn't rely on him anymore, so his dream serves no purpose... Ironically at that moment Guts realizes that the appreciation from the Band of the Hawk was all he ever needed. Guts realizes his purpose when Griffith loses his, so beautifully poetic.
Personally what I find hardest-hitting is the way Griffith/Femto ruthlessly stares Guts down during the "act" with Casca. The saddest thing was how Casca told Guts to look away; even as she is being violated, her love for Guts shines through. On some level, Casca knew Griffith was harming her to hurt the person she loved, and in the only way she could, she wanted to protect Guts from yet another psychological scar. If that isn't pure love, I don't know what is.
@@serpicopiu3591 Supreme trauma. Another layer of the suffering is that Casca was probably in extreme pain the whole time due to her Brand of Sacrifice, which Guts says is extremely painful in the presence of the Godhand. It is like a fractal of suffering, with more layers the longer one thinks about it.
@@daniell1483 I think the worst part is that at some level Casca thought this may have been what she wanted, since she always had mixed feelings about Griffith which she never came to terms with, since everything was also her plan she felt guilty for everything that lead them there, which is what broke her mind imo
What makes Griffith such a beautiful character is that he is such a realistic and profound depiction of pure evil. A lot of people prefer villains that are "broken heroes" or villains that are "pure evil", but what makes Griffith special is that he shows that there's not really a difference. It is incredibly easy for us to dismiss some evils as being perpetrated by people who have no soul. They're different. There's something wrong with them inside. But... Griffith is one of the worst and at the same time so understandable that many people say they might do the same thing if they were in his position. The harsh reality is: you have the potential within you to be as bad as Griffith. Just because you love someone does not preclude you from enacting great evils upon them. Just because you believe in goodness does not mean you are good. Just because you are strong does not make you unbreakable. NEVER forget to question what you think is true and right.
@@Molnigt That's fair enough yeah, if you become evil you're likely to become a version of evil that fits with who you are specifically, I guess the main thing is just that there's a lot of roads which can lead you down a path as bad as Griffith's. Also, when I said that about people saying they'd do what Griffith did, I meant specifically the part when he's got to make the choice of sacrificing everyone but probably not the you know Casca part. You have to choose between living as a DEEPLY broken cripple and being a god... regardless of the stakes there's nobody who wouldn't pause at a question like that.
This is a great understanding of the character and its even reflected in how Guts is constantly fighting off his inner demon that threatens to make him as vile as Griffith all for his revenge, right down to him nearly S/A-ing Casca in a blind rage at one point. The story shows through Guts that nobody is safe from committing the same evil they hate.
@@redjirachi1You gonna like reading Elric of Melnibone, he’s the inspiration for many dark fantasy, dark Elves, dark brooding edge lord, handsome king white hair albino, Warhammer Chaos myth and Miura himself. Elric is basically Griffith if he got what he wanted but regret that decision to the point of brooding abandon it, seeking a meaning to his life and at the same time fighting off being a pawn to higher beings battling each other between Chaos, Law and Balance, or he’s just Guts if Guts an insufferable depressed poet, Elric carried an iconic evil blade called Stormbringer which a double edge dagger that keeps him alive by eating souls Elric slain or threaten to drink his friends and love ones souls if Elric refused to feed him, sounds like some big sword. The book were written in the 60s and were very trippy and weird, also the author of Elric created the term “Multiverse” and all his novels set in different multiverse but the same deities and mythology.
Unsurprisingly,Miquella from “Elden ring” is 100% a reference to griffith. The DLC makes it VERY clear that he is inspired by griffith. What with notes how he literally was throwing away”guilt/hesitation/doubt/etc”. Even love. Anything that wound stand in his way of godhood. Like griffith, his goal WAS noble. But he did MONSTROUS things to try to achieve it. And also had the gift of downright supernatural manipulation
The Souls games have been heavily inspired by Beserk since they started back in 2009. We have several nearly-direct Guts references every single game. But we didn't get a single Griffith reference until the final dlc of Elden Ring. It's incredible, and it truly brings everything full circle. After 15 years, our final boss is Griffith.
Inspired yes, but Miquella and Griffith seem quite different levels of evil to me. Miquellas intentions are morally superior to over just wanting something and being willing to sacrifice others for your own "dream". Miquella motivation was mostly compationate and came from the will to improve the situation. Not really his fault that his only option was to replace a destructive tyranny with an absolute dictortorship. In his case we can argue whether the sacrifices he made and the impact on the world were worth it. When it comes to Griffith the answer is a clear hell no.
@@Sykroid griffith was kind of referenced already actually. False king Allant is basically “what if griffith but old”. Gyndolin is the “androgynous male with ties to a dark sun”. Also don’t forget lordran being a kindgom on top of a tree/s. But yeah Miquella is by far their best and most obvious imo
I think the main reason why Griffith is hated so is that, for all he did during and after the sacrifice, he is immune to retribution. Such is his ascension that he is, up until now, untouchable, unable to be held to account. This video reminds me of the video you made about Bondrewd the Novel, Sovereign of the Dawn, where you mentioned the book written by Michael Stone, the Anatomy of Evil. Truth be told I think you were right; Bondrewd seems to score significantly higher than Griffith, but he is not immune to justice.
I think you put it succinctly as far as what the issue with Griffith is. We all feel like Guts in that moment. Unable to do anything, ripping our very limbs off just to try and get a single punch on that piece of shit. The best justice we can get is the fact that before all of that Griffith was probably the most horrifically tortured prisoner on Earth. Maybe the best Guts can hope to do is at least tell Griffith he deserved all the horrible things the kingdom did to him when he was imprisoned. As a final act of defiance and as a reminder to Griffith of the pitiful state he was in before he ascended.
I wouldn't say that he was the most tortured. Father Mozgus was definitely putting random people through some pretty comparable forms of torture. Griffiths definitely lasted a lot longer though.
Really? I thought that aside from Bondrewd's whole research lab being destroyed and losing his magnum opus form he made through Prushka, he was able to regenerate and get off scot free.
What I hate the most is he literally achieved (near) world peace in the most idealistic of ways, and I can't stand it. All the reasons humanity fights for: conquest, resources, religion, etc., and he found the one way to unify everyone, which is to have everyone desire peace over all other things. I hate it so much because world peace isn't something that can be forced, but has to be chosen by the populace. Much like a magician performing a card trick, he used the illusion of choice to make everyone think this is how to live together, all the while forcing the outcome. It's beyond ingenious, but it makes my blood boil that it happened through someone so insufferable. As you said, he is immune to retribution. He is literally Jesus x10 and even if there was a way to kill him, the whole world would see you as the Devil for what you did to their "savior". God, I'm so angry lol
Shou Tucker is also in the running, because Worst Anime Dad EVER. Also Bondrewd is a monster, and only "loves" his victims as tools to be used and discarded.
Not only is he an incredibly evil, horrifying and hateable villain, but he's also a genuinely great characters with tons of flaws, nuances, vulnerabilities and insecurities that make him feel realistically human and even empathetic to a certain degree. That's what makes him number 1 villain imo.
Griffith is not a 'villain'. What is a villain anyway? can you define it? no. 'Villain' is a cartoon term made for comedy and/or propaganda uses. The moral framework you use to judge him changes from individual to individual and is eventually shown to be redundant.
@@vorpalinferno9711 Villain is just a term that means someone who opposes the main protagonist, how evil or not evil they are has nothing to do with it. It's very simple. Draco from Harry Potter for example is one of the major villains/antagonists that constantly threatens, challenges and causes problems for Harry, but he's not a bad or evil person at all. Griffith is morally complex and has many empathetic and redeemable qualities, but slaughtering your loved ones and r*ping an unarmed woman just to spite your best friend and fulfill your own selfish needs is nothing short of evil. There's nothing that can excuse or justify that.
I will presume you are joking by trying to look different. Here is why that mindset is wrong; saying oh you are being judgemental requires a judgement in and of itself therefore you are already are siding with them. And to quote a wise proverb I hate to tell you this but evil exsists in this world if you can not except the fact then you either become it or worse get used and influenced by it.
Griffith became who he is on one day, playing with his childhood friends over control of various pieces of junk. On that day he looked up, the skies cleared, and he beheld a majestic castle, one that to him was "the biggest piece of junk." Inside Griffith was born a single-minded dream to take that castle. Griffith pursues that castle (synonymous with his kingdom) simply because it is the dream - the goal - that he has arbitrarily chosen to devote his life to. To some extent it is as simple as that. I genuinely believe that if you were to come up to Griffith and ask him why he wants his own kingdom, he would not be capable of giving you an answer. He doesn't have one, he simply pursues it for the circular reason that it is the dream he must pursue. Introspection comes poorly to Griffith. Perhaps at some earlier point in his life, Griffith did have a more ideological reason for pursuing his dream, such as becoming the king to help uplift the poor. But even if Griffith did once have those thoughts, he has long forgotten about them and the only thing that remains is his obsession with his dream. Griffith is obsessed by his dream, so much so that he defines himself by it.
Griffith is a character I love to hate. Griffith's dream consumes him, and he would have been far happier if he had given up his dream and formed real relationships with the people he cared about. But in the end, he could never let people close to him, and the flames of his ambitions burn away his humanity. In the end, he gets his kingdom, but ever since his reincarnation, I've not seen him be even a fraction as happy as he was as a human. He looks as empty, robotic, and mechanical as Femto. Such a fall from grace.
Fun Fact: I stopped reading the manga for 5 years cause of the Eclipse (returned and the Boat Arc was still happening). I have never felt such hatred for a fictional character before, but Griffith is in the top 5. Kentaro did a fantastic job.
The fact that he keeps doing horrible things as the manga goes on that straight up rival the eclipse is wild to me, like how much did Miura intend for us to hate him
@@ArtificialDjDAGX Wikipedia can be edited by anybody and is not a trustworthy source. Also, from what I have heard, there are quotes from the author saying that of course there's going to be some kind of happy or positive ending for Guts and the others, because otherwise everything that happens is meaningless.
Miura is such a good author that he made a manipulator that manipulates some readers to believe he did nothing wrong. Edit: It's a compliment to Kentaro Miura.
Nice to see you mention the Master in present tense hes still alive in alot of our minds and hearts. I've read some of the BIG works, Iliad, Odyssey, Paradise Lost etc and Miuras work is the modern EPIC. I dont even think things like Star Wars, Lord of the Rings can compare to the pure artistry in writing and aesthetic. The best way I could describe Berserk is a Beautiful Nightmare.
As he was when I first experienced Berserk from the 1997 anime back in '99 or '00 when a college buddy loaned me his whole set... Judeau will always be my favorite character. Great video on Griffith! I love these deep dives into Berserk's lore and characters, even if I've seen/read enough of them to have encyclopedic knowledge of the series at this point. :)
Judeau is such a selfless character. He hides his true feelings from Casca because he knows that Guts and Casca are falling for one another. He saves both Guts and Casca numerous times in the Manga and anime. He's always putting his comrades before himself. He's basically the polar opposite of Griffith.
Berserk is going to end with every reader thrusting their arms into the air and lending Guts their hatred to defeat Griffith, like the people of Earth lending Goku their energy for a spirit bomb.
1:59 this sentence really opened my eyes. There were certain parts in golden age where I forgot that Griffith was the main villain despite him being a little weird at points. The story does a really good job of grounding Griffith to the point you forgot what he becomes by the end of the arc
Just read through all of berserk, instantly in my top 3 stories ever, but I prayed everyday on his downfall, cause post eclipse this man just got W after W with greatest of ease simply by existing, cause at this point he was basically a SI character with himself as the author of the story. He really is more childlike than anyone, wanting have it all and skirt any all consequences for his actions. Needless to say, I don’t pity him
W vid really enjoyed watching it, normally I put something like this in the background while gaming but had to lock in for this one. Keep up the good work.
It's funny to see people sympathizing with this written villain, and then all the people wishing real world harm on that person. Damn, you people scary.
I don't how you can truly hate him. The guy went nutz after being tortured, that's basically a completely different person, everything after doesn't count (I only watched 1997 series, and no I will never read manga, everything after the 21th episode I consider garbage, it's just completely different show to me then). Tho the other thing is he was always the guy who was killing people for money, that's not very moral by default.
given the world of berserk griffith is not even on the top 10 list of evil characters that we have seen in the manga to date. several of the nobles are probably much worse and objectively more evil than grig. the reason why you hate him so much is because of ther emotional and parasocial relationship to the characters while you have no relationship to the evil nobles or their victims.
@@KT-pv3kl Yeah I agree, throughout the manga you definitely see some foul crap. However, we see Griffith and Gut's form a strong bond, we see them joke around occasionally and we see each of them stand up for one another. You almost see the band of the hawk as one big family. That's why the eclipse hits so hard because up to that point Griffith was like a brother/mentor to Gut's and then he does a complete 180 and sacrifices all of the band of the hawk & grapes casca infront of him. For some damn wings. If he was just some random evil guy (or a random Apostle/Noble) it still would've been awful but I wouldn't 'HATE" the Apostle/Noble. At least not near as much as I hate Griffith, because it's what I would expect from an evil character like that. Having a former best friend/companion do it? Just makes it hurt 10x more and genuinely makes you hate him for it. The betrayal is incomprehensible I wanted to legit throw the book out my bedroom window xD
@@KT-pv3kl Griffith is definitely fucked up but who’s even more fucked up is that one demon who raped basically for fun and even forced his men’s who was in his army to do so as well even if they enjoyed it or not I forgot his name but this is before the eclipse
@@KT-pv3kl Do note, that the reason the world is so shit is at least like 80% Griffith's fault. His whole Jesus plan is the reason why the spiritual realm and human world are combining, meaning he's responsible for every single innocent person the demons torture and kill. He's like a firefighter who sets fires so he can swoop in to "save the day" by putting it out. Except he "saves the day" after 5 houses have already burnt down and dozens of people have died. And then expand that to a global scale.
0:48 “ … hate who they are, not how they’re written.” A brilliant observation. I hate Griffith so much that I refuse to “like” fan art featuring him, despite the art being exceptionally beautiful.
I really hate this bastard. Not only is he the most hated villain in manga & anime, but also in fiction as a whole. This is because the original manga series is still on hiatus for too long. As of the latest chapters, Guts couldn't come close to kill him. At one point we loved Griffith during the Golden Age Arc as he has noble ambitions, but after his heinous crimes of that infamous Eclipse thus becoming Femto, he has haunted us to this very day & we feel sorry for Guts & Casca. I want nothing to do with Griffith/Femto.
Great video. I think the real tragedy is Gut's listening to that speech after the assassination and not realizing that he was the exception that proved Griffith's rule. That one moment was the beginning of the end for everyone.
dont know how guts can overcame all of the struggling while century doesnt help the king of fairies to kill Casuality! even with a sword that cut space nothing harm Femto so what kind of thing can make Guts win??
@@karimmime1050 I don't think kentaro miura saw Griffith dying to guts in a battle , I personally believe Griffith would have so much sorrow in his heart , shown how he no longer smiles due to the boredom of conquering his dream and desiring for more , that he would give up him self to guts and guts would either kill him and live in peace or wait for death still with hate since all of his former friends are dead or he forgives him
Great video. Reading that Miura quote about how the series momentarily tanked in popularity because of the decision is kinda funny. Can’t help but think it was cruel joke for the 90’s anime to end at that moment. Kinda genius tbh cos I remember being livid that I immediately decided to read the manga for resolution. Still trying to seek it 😅

What made me fall in love with berserk was I had heard about Griffith before so I didn’t like him, but even knowing where he ends up, I still found myself liking him and wishing his path went differently as I went through Golden Age, the story made me both understand *more* why he did what he did, and hate him him 10x more at the same time. Even the hate I felt is a different kind of hate. It just such a good story
One part of me that loved Golden age Griffith tells me that Femto is completly different person and my Griffith died when Femto was born but I know subconsciously that Femto is just Griffith that sacrificed his own empathy with his own will and it hurts me so much. I could forget everything he did if not for what he did to Casca and killing Judeau
To me that's what separates Griffith and Femto for me, to me Griffith is his best, the care for his men, the part of him that's willing to suffer the worst of violations to keep them safe. Femto is his worst, the man that would smile at the news of Adonis's death, who would kidnap a little girl to make her father dance on his puppet strings, and the type of person to make the sacrifice in the first place. but that's just my take
I don't think Griffith ever truly had much empathy, to be honest. He dressed up his actions in altruism and nobility, such as when he prostituted himself to further the Band of the Hawk. But the BotH was only ever a reflection of himself and his own ambitions to begin with. Everyone under him was only valuable insofar as their ability to be a valued member of his band. Even the princess, to whom he is supposed to become a loving husband, is just a tool which he uses to either advance himself or to drown his sorrow at Guts' departure. Griffith grew up as a little boy who was treated like trash, and essentially worthless. His ultimate goal is to become so great that no one can ever doubt his worth again. No single person will ever be worth more than that to him.
@@derek96720 I believe that Griffith doesn't know who he is to be honest. He says that someone equal to him can be his friend and that someone has to follow their dream but Guts was Griffith only friend while lacking those qualities. He was the only person Griffith could talk without his noble face and just chill out. The same with that boy that died. In the eclipse Griffith had a vision where he had to climb on his dead comrades to reach his dream and he was holding that boy getting ready to place him on his pile of corpses. He said that he wanted wings because he didn't want more those young boys die under him for a price of 200 or so men. While Griffith has many red flags his Golden age arc had some empathy even if he didn't know about it
Griffith died when he was tortured imo. His mind was far gone when he made the deal with God hand. They force a deal on him when he's barely even mentally there. It's like people didn't even read berserk. The whole "is the destiny of mankind -" monolog just goes right over everyone's heads, it's implying the gods are pulling the strings and no one has any real control
Your griffith is psychopath he would kill you or use you for his dream until you are useless. Any moment of humanity durring the golden age arch was manufactured all a lie.
Great essay: well-written, thorough, and particularly keen examination; accessible vocal tone, pacing, articulation, and general delivery. But my favorite part is the use of the Legend of Zelda background music. Some of it puts to mind Majora's Mask, some Twilight Princess. All excellent choices. EDIT: Subscribed.
I recently got a friend of mine into Berserk. I told him for so long that he really should read the books before watching the show, and that it wasn't the best introduction to the series in my opinion. I told him he wouldn't properly be prepared for what the anime covers given how short it is, but he's one of those people who needs to buy all the volumes of a manga if he wants to read it and buying every chapter of berserk is a $300 endeavor. Finally i caved and agreed to watch through the show with him to explain the different bits that were missed (the apostles, the skull knight, etc.). He loved it at first, really vibed with the characters and didn't understand why Griffith was so hated. Then the eclipse happened and the look on his face was like that look someone would have if they saw their hero do something unspeaka- oh yeah. At least he can't say I didn't warn him.
I think... the best single word to describe where Griffith went wrong, was because of "Innocence." Now, not that he is without sin or didn't cause crime or hurt anyone, but the Definition of Innocence that he is overcome by Purity and Naivete. He, regardless of all his sword skill and charisma, cleverness or natrual beauty, was like a child like Judea said. His grand desire was a childish one, all the war a game. But as a child, he lost once, took his frustration out on someone weaker than himself, and once he was punished for it and made to be unable to win his game he didn't want to play anymore and threw away all his 'toys'. The fact of the matter is, his actions are evil, undoubtably, but he does it without thought because as one very meme-y video game puts it best "Kids can be Cruel, Jack." The worst part is, we finally got to the part where the last piece of his humanity is stripped away. That Innocence of a child was lost the second he woke up from his dream as a child. His Tears are because he realizes now that he can never have that happiness, as a child loved by their parents and family can have. I almost want him upon the end of the series, to kill himself on Guts' sword. One last asshole move to rob that poor bastard of his revenge, maybe understanding finally now that he's come so far, he can never truly have what he craved. Maybe if you want to throw in one last final thought from him being why he wanted so badly to become king: "Because everyone loves the King! If I'm King People will love me too!" kinda thing.
Basically, if Griffith hadn't tried to shortcut becoming royalty, his fall might never have happened. But that was his sin; Pride. Personally i think his internal monologue about being willing to kill Guts rather than let him leave is one of his few moments of genuine panic, as his best friend was resolved to leave him, and he breaks him. Course he is still who he is, but that really affected him.
As a dude who planned and plotted everything with such precision, his one blindspot ended up being the one he relied upon the most. Guts was irreplaceable, not only because of his combat prowess, but because he was the one thing keeping Griffith from taking shortcuts out of desperation. He could always rely on that hunk of a man to come through in the end. What broke him more than anything else is that Guts beat him where once before he beat Guts in the same fashion. Guts didn't change his tactics to beat Griffith, he changed his limits. Guts used the exact same move as he did all those years before, even despite Griffith seeing him practice that move every day for years. Anyone could have guessed what Guts was planning, except Griffith. Guts was always growing stronger while Griffith was the exact same person as when they had met. The biggest hit to Griffith's Pride was knowing he's ultimately incapable of becoming more than what he already was -- unless he used the behelit shortcut that is...
I don’t think Griffith would’ve betrayed the band of the hawks if he didn’t get tortured. For building a true Kingdom you need subordinates who are willing to follow your lead but after his torture he got so messed up that he didn’t care anymore
The thing is though it wasn’t just betraying the Hawks it was the sacrifice at Albion simply to be reborn, the murdering of innocent mages on the off chance they could threaten his rule, essentially the ruination of the world post merger so he could play God in his new Kingdom under the guise of benevolent leader protecting people from a calamity he caused. But worst of all his violation of Casca right in front of Guts for quite literally not other reason than pure spite and sadism, his choice to betray the Hawks while vile you can see how he got to that decision, it’s what comes after that is absolutely monstrous.
@@Hammer56Time Femto and Griffith aren’t the same entity imo, Griffith only decided to use the behelith without knowing the consequences, Femto on the other hand is a pure sadist that’s why he did what he did
@@zodiacUNDsyndicat I don’t at all think they’re separate entities as personally thinking of them as two entirely different people removes a lot of the impact of his decisions. Femto is Griffith but one completely devoid of any moral hangups or emotions that would prevent him from doing whatever sick and twisted desire crosses his mind. You can see Femto really isn’t like that toward any other person, he isn’t overly sadistic or cruel and in fact come later arcs is even viewed as a hero and saint amongst those in Falconia and despite looking like Griffith he is just Femto in a Griffith suit. So Femto isn’t cruel and sadistic for the sake of it like Slaan for instance, but BECAUSE Femto is Griffith that gnawing thought pre-eclipse that Guts is the reason he lost everything and now having the power to assert his dominance over him and punish him for his perceived betrayal caused him to do what he did to Casca.
8:16 “discarding as much of his humanity as necessary, but not completely wanting to lose it” a parallel between Griffith and guts. Where guts is willing to discard his humanity pushing himself with the berserker armor, but still doesn’t want to lose himself and no longer be human.
In addition to what happened to Casca, there's another aspect of the Eclipse that solidifies Griffith's evil. It is said that those sacrificed for the God Hand have their souls taken to the Abyss, a swirling mass of negative essence in the depths of the astral plane where the damned are lost in negative feeling for eternity. Griffith didn't just murder his comrades, he SENT THEM TO HELL.
The "greater good" argument works for a villain like Raoh, who was violent and greedy, but slowly softened over the course of the story, transitioning from a conquerer to a protector. Griffith was never good. He just put on a facade because it helped draw people to his cause. He embraces his selfishness as the story progresses.
Your artwork is beautiful...LOVE the skull/horse/creature he rides. Not one clue about what's going on yet storywise, but if you keep posting chapters Ill keep reading them because I want to know what happens next...which is pretty much the best thing you can say about any narrative artform..
People who say that Griffith’s mind was broken don’t understand that the Godhand didn’t really manipulate him. Yes, they are a bunch of assholes, but they did give him a choice. He still made that choice. As the story goes on for guts in the manga, we see him go through so much physical and mental pain. So much so that he has a darker side of himself that can consume him. And yet… He still makes the right choice or tries to. He’s selfless and protects his group and innocent people. Griffith betrayed his friends for power. Guts to some degree since he has a beheilt. But he never does.
I feel like the wings symbology is very relatable to Icarus. The classic cautionary tale of flying too close to the sun already seems present (he will fall upon coming too close to his kingdom). However violently condemning your friends to death and assaulting your crush in front of her BF/your best friend JUST to get said wings is… wild
There's always a critical detail that is never mentioned when it comes to the relationship between Guts and Griffith. Guts was born from a dead woman hanging from a tree - it's strongly implied in the first episodes and throughout, that Guts exists somehow outside of fate or free from it. Whereas everyone else is guided by the currents of the Crimson Baelit, Guts can't be - he was never quite born (cut from the womb I believe they say at one point). As we find in the Blackswordsman acr, many of those who traded their souls for daemonhood were tricked by fate into becoming what they hated the most. Griffith finds Guts fascinating because Guts isn't subject to fate like his other folowers are - Guts is truly free from Griffith's dream (at least for a while). This is why Guts escapes the eclipse, this is how he defeats Griffith, and its why Guts noticed him straight away - and potentially why they were able to bond. Zodd references this at the Castle when he sees the Egg of the King - and tells Guts, that is when "he will know his fate". It's a really crucial detail - especially with the monologue at the intro about mortals being playthings of the Gods and having no will of their own. In many respects, when Griffith describes what an equal - a friend - would be to him - it's obvious he's describing Guts.
I remember when people hated Sasuke who was traumatized kid who wanted revenge and people loved his brother more, who did an entire genocide. Like wtf is wrong with people sympathising with such horrible people. The fact there are people who say Griffith did nothing wrong, should seriously get professional help. Edit: missed word.
I think most people are just trolling, and there's a lot to be said about "rule of cool" when we're looking at character designs (Femto does look sick, Itachi was a mysterious badass, when you're a kid that counts for a lot) But there was this weird subset of people that really overidentified with Griffith, would vehemently argue the semantics of the BotH's sacrifice being "legitimate" because they wanted to support Griffith's dream, and would claim that how they were sacrificed - on a battlefield or in the Eclipse - was meaningless. This interpretation of course completely overlooks the themes and purpose of Berserk as a story, and is a pretty good litmus test of how desperately the Griffith defender needs to touch grass and get off of reddit. The only people who genuinely defend Griffith's actions are contrarians, attention wh0res, or people who spend so much time online that they no longer have functional moral/social compasses - self-induced sociopathy.
@@SableWind only a psycho or sociopath can defend Griffith IMO. Doesn't matter how far i fall, i'd never support someone like Griffith even if he's a fictional character.
@@Immolator772 I think it's fine to like the character as a villain, but yeah identifying with Griffith or defending his actions is definitely a sign of untreated mental issues lol
I've started reading Berserk (I have 4 of those brick omibus) and, while I haven't gotten to the Eclipse part, Griffith already rubbed me the wrong way. The way he talks and addresses his comrades, it's less of a genuine way and more of a 'I'll tell you what you want to hear' kind of way, to get what he wants. Already from the gate he's a liar and manipulator. But he's so damn charming that Guts overlooks moments when Griffith is acting suspicious. I don't think Griffith sees his men as people with their own wants, needs, and dreams. Just tools. And if one of his men starts to have doubts or complain, Griffith puts on the charm and makes an inspiring speech to get them on his side again. But if that doesn't work, he isn't above resulting to violence, like he did when Guts left. The band of Hawk feels more like a cult tbh. And Griffith is the head of it, obsessed with keeping control And this is all before he became Femto. He was already an antagonist before becoming a God Hand. One can argue that Femto is the REAL Griffith without the humanity filter.
THIS. I really can't understand how a lot of people don't see this. 90% of the pretty things that come out of Griffith's mouth are just shit he knows other people want to hear. They're not genuine displays of his own virtue.
@@theblasblas well Griffith is pretty charming. He charmed the pants off Guts and the audience too. Even after the red flags we just...dismiss and push them aside because of this. Then the eclipse happened and....well we'll never go back to giving him chances ever again. The mask of humanity is fully removed and Griffith became who he truly is with no filter: Femto.
23:32 What a great use of this song at this point. Similiarly as dark and depraved as "The Eclipse" in Berserk: "Dance with the Devil" by Immortal Technique hits the same shock and disgust with so many people in their respective genres. Crazy parallel. Amazing analysis, can't wait to see more of what's to come from this channel.
I love what Judeau says about Griffith about what men who gather other men together under causes are like. So true. Very insightful. I have seen this before but never could have put it into words. Usually a big shot person, rich and well aware of their own status in the world (definitely a politician but also like a pastor of a church or even the manager of a business) and so many times i have questioned if they actually believe anything or if they are just organizing people around them because they want power. I dont know if im making sense.

Feedback on Devoro
I make manga, so I'm going to focus into technical stuff and talking.
Short and sweet notes
Pro : I love the astetic, gives me bloodborne and cosmic horror vibes.
Detailed
*ART*
First off with the art style, I know your artist is talented and that's clear by the hyper detailed sections and expressions.
*Lettering*
For the most part, it was servicing the story.
*Less Combat and More Talking*
As several others have mentioned, your fight scene is cool, but we don't know enough about the character, why they're doing anything, to care about their survival. We're not attached to this character, so what does it matter if they die?
*Final Thoughts*
My main concern is that since chapter 0 (As the 1st chapter) is the most important chapter in manga/comics, and will be the decision point to many readers as to whether they will continue the story.
Griffith's dream was a castle, my dream is to board a mothership the size of a Death Star. 🤣
Obviously you’re just making it now but i have to wonder if you’re going to make it physically as well. I just read it and I’m basically in love with it now can’t wait for the next chapter
Kinda remind me of climber...btw, great work
Griffith solidified being one of my most hated characters in media when he "did the deed" to Casca just to spite an already heartbroken and tired Guts.
@@daniell1483 And ppl say she enjoyed it
@@Doktor_dooom those people have brain damage. Simple as that. Statement that "Casca enjoyed it" is way worse than "Griffith did nothing wrong"
@@Doktor_dooom Oh there sick into the core for saying that.

Uh... You might wanna check out what the fucker does next... You're not gonna like it
I didn't get that far but at the end of the 2017 Berserk show the skull Knight says "You might want her to go back, but she might not."
@@Dischingo, that question is certainly a theme in the later chapters of berserk, but definitely catch up because that question is imo definitively answered. Very sweet but sad too.
and then he fucking takes their kid, kidnaps casca, and nukes elf-helm…so yeah, fuck you griffith
It’s so true. It hurts because, as Casca heals we heal, and then we find out that despite all that both she and we will never be whole again 😢
Griffith is not only evil, but the direct opposition to healing pain, which is the personal journey of the everyone in story to begin with.
terrific observation

A song about a man committing the most unforgivable act to someone that was closest to him during the part where Griffith is about to commit an unforgivable act to those that were closest to him.
i never really rocked with Griffiths dream of wanting to become a king was a selfish dream about obtaining power. Never once does he ever state that he wants to be a king for any altruistic purpose. He simply wanted to be a king because he wanted to be a king and any good fortune that fell onto others or the world as byproduct of his dream was completely secondary or inconsequential to him.
Exactly. He wants power because he had none as a child. It's really not complicated.
To be fair, he is doing as much good as he can now that he is king. Still a piece of shit human being tho.

@@daniell1483 I think the worst part is that at some level Casca thought this may have been what she wanted, since she always had mixed feelings about Griffith which she never came to terms with, since everything was also her plan she felt guilty for everything that lead them there, which is what broke her mind imo
Casca loved Griffith more than Guts
If I were in the same position I would kill myself instead, it's not THAT understandable.
Bro....
You are entitled to your shallow opinion.

The editor: *Proceed.*
Was very disappointing for me that we don't ever talk to Miquella in the DLC and don't have the option to be on his side
@@vorpalinferno9711Of course the moral relativists had to show up 🙄
@@vorpalinferno9711 Villain is just a term that means someone who opposes the main protagonist, how evil or not evil they are has nothing to do with it.
The “dance with the devil” instrumental in the background of the Eclipse scenes was a great detail!
For some reason it reminded me of “where do I begin” by Andy Williams

Judeau is such a selfless character. He hides his true feelings from Casca because he knows that Guts and Casca are falling for one another. given the world of berserk griffith is not even on the top 10 list of evil characters that we have seen in the manga to date.

I think... the best single word to describe where Griffith went wrong, was because of "Innocence." Now, not that he is without sin or didn't cause crime or hurt anyone, but the Definition of Innocence that he is overcome by Purity and Naivete. The fact of the matter is, his actions are evil, undoubtably, but he does it without thought because as one very meme-y video game puts it best "Kids can be Cruel, Jack."
The worst part is, we finally got to the part where the last piece of his humanity is stripped away.
Griffith is the perfect cult leader
I don’t think Griffith would’ve betrayed the band of the hawks if he didn’t get tortured.
For building a true Kingdom you need subordinates who are willing to follow your lead but after his torture he got so messed up that he didn’t care anymore
plus his guilt
people dont want to bring up his tendons got cut. making it impossible to do anything
Griffith was always a bastard and the fact he never deny it is why he is so good.

8:16 “discarding as much of his humanity as necessary, but not completely wanting to lose it” a parallel between Griffith and guts. Where guts is willing to discard his humanity pushing himself with the berserker armor, but still doesn’t want to lose himself and no longer be human.
He sacrificed everything for a gay Batman suit 💀
😂😂😂😂😂
That's one way to put it
fr fr
For his kingdom fr
More like owlman
Bro the fact your videos are getting mad love now is incredible
Berk content = best content
Glad to see you're still on that Struggler grind💪
2:08 Nah man, he can't ruin my favorite holiday too lol
He embraces his selfishness as the story progresses.
bro why did you start yelling at 1:19 💀💀😂😂
**GRIFFIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITH**
i stubbed my toe and was tryna play it off. my bad
What an absoulute masterpiece of a video. Going to read chap No. 0 of your manga rn
Devero looks incredible just from the art shared in your “sponsorship” definitely checking it out
Your artwork is beautiful...LOVE the skull/horse/creature he rides. Not one clue about what's going on yet storywise, but if you keep posting chapters Ill keep reading them because I want to know what happens next...which is pretty much the best thing you can say about any narrative artform..
23:36 dance with the devil playing here is superb
23:34
Well done on the song choice. I see what you did there.
It’s such an emotional moment. It actually hurt to watch Guts.
Medieval p diddy had me dying 😂😂
Finally a berserk video man I've been waiting so long cuz I love your berserk content masked man 🖤
People who say that Griffith’s mind was broken don’t understand that the Godhand didn’t really manipulate him.
What makes Griffith intriguing is that what he does in horrific, but it is understandable what led him to become who he was.
That immortal technique drop prior to the eclipse review... chef's kiss got damn
You hate Griffith? Good, that means you have media literacy
Edit: I started a war in my comment section 💀
If evil, why twink?
You can have media literacy and not hate Griffith, some people are just less hatefully invested in certain acts as long as they're fictional.
What??? Hatred should be reserved for badly written charactets who do things you think are bad. If anything that just shows you're overly emotional.
griffith did nothing wrong.
You hate Griffith? Good
so i know you will not betray friends for your own good
I feel like the wings symbology is very relatable to Icarus.
The manga looks sick. Keep it up man 💯
DUDE your comic looks fucking insane!!!! Can’t wait to support
I watched theallmightyloli's 21 hour video covering all of beserk, and i enjoyed every moment of it
I remember when people hated Sasuke who was traumatized kid who wanted revenge and people loved his brother more, who did an entire genocide. Like wtf is wrong with people sympathising with such horrible people. The fact there are people who say Griffith did nothing wrong, should seriously get professional help.
Edit: missed word.
I think most people are just trolling, and there's a lot to be said about "rule of cool" when we're looking at character designs (Femto does look sick, Itachi was a mysterious badass, when you're a kid that counts for a lot)
But there was this weird subset of people that really overidentified with Griffith, would vehemently argue the semantics of the BotH's sacrifice being "legitimate" because they wanted to support Griffith's dream, and would claim that how they were sacrificed - on a battlefield or in the Eclipse - was meaningless.
Dance with the devil beat in the back of the Griffith monologue is wicked 😂
And Griffith is the head of it, obsessed with keeping control
And this is all before he became Femto.
The video buffered at 0:11 seconds right when Griffith looked at the screen
Nah really?!??!?!
@@GODENERUONE dead serious
Same lol
ominous mate
23:33 I once knew a mercenary whose name was Griffith, from an early age the devil knew he was with it
I love what Judeau says about Griffith about what men who gather other men together under causes are like.
I don't think I will ever see a piece of fictional media that upsets me more deeply than Berserk did when I was 14.
dance with the devil literally sent shivers down my spine
Holy crap.... @23:40 ... Dance with the Devil - Immortal Technique, what a perfect freaking choice :O.
Chrono Trigger music was a great touch! I love your videos man
