  • After some days off, re-stocking the boat we are off to the Kimberley. One of the most remote regions in the Northwest Australia with an amazing wildlife. Our first stop - Berkeley River surprises with his frontier spirit. All inclusive, climbing gorges, waterfalls, swim holes and some serious beginner rock climbing.

    The Berkeley river canyon looks amazing... what a glorious spot. Add to that the salt water crocs, waterfalls, rock art and climbing walls and it looks like a chunk of heaven. Having a companion, crewmember, partner in crime like Marguerita along is just the cherry on the cake... boy, her smile just lights up the place. Good on ya, Plukky.

    if you have to tie a harness, don't use the figure 8. There's no waist support and it has a habit of falling down. Do this, take a strap about 12 feet long (for a big guy. a little less for smaller people), find the middle. Tuck the middle into you waist band just enough to hold it. Both trailing ends go down and between your legs. bring each one around to the front of each leg. Weave them under the strap as tucked in the waist band, pull through and go around your back on the same side you weaved under. cross them over in the back and come back to the front. Tie them together with a reef knot (square knot) but not directly in the center (off to one side about 6 inches is fine because you don't want to carabener into the knot area) Grab the around the waist bit and the tucked in the waistband bit together and click in with a carabiner. That's your harness and it won't fall down. This is the old style that the mountain rescue used in the alps before harnesses were widely available. If you need to see it, I can make a video and send it to you.

    • @garymyers6638
      @garymyers6638 6 лет назад

      SAILING into FREEDOM I typically use flat woven straps for a hasty harness. About an inch wide. But you could use a round strap but normally I'd call that a rope.

    Seeing those gorges my first thought was yeah!! Deep water soloing paradise - then my second thought was - CROCS!
    But then with you leading the expedition crocs are the least of Marg's worries mate!! Please get a harness for her or at the very least construct a proper waist belt so she doesnt flip upside down and fall out of the makeshift one. Stick to the orange rock - it looks a LOT more solid, test holds before applying too much weight to them and get yourself a helmet. You two seem like cool people - would hate to see either of you go splat! Its super important for the belayer to wear a helmet at wild crags like that (ones that have not seen climbing traffic and been previously cleaned of loose rock) a mountain guide friend of ours died recently when he fell dislodging a rock that killed his belayer - and then of course there was no-one to stop his fall.
    Oh well your guardian angels were looking out for you this time (as they are wont to do when we learn things) - take care in future.
    All the best with your travels - from a long time South African rock climber.

    Margarida is happily bouncing around those rocks, but isn't there a lot of critters in Australia that will kill you? I had a guide tell me once its faster to go over the critters that won't do you in than to list the things that will do you in. Still it's a beautiful place, did a number of biological studies there in the 1980s. Love the channel thanks for sharing your adventures with us.
