- Episode 355 : Season 11 : The South Island of New Zealand - Aotearoa
Hello Friends,
On this episode we depart Long Bay and head up a very tight channel to the small town of Havelock at the far end of Pelorus Sound. After getting fueled up and the water topped off we found a slip for the night.
The next day we headed out on a hike to a waterfall Rhonda had found online. It was a beautiful hike and she even talked me into to getting in to the very cold water.

His ex wife's loss is another woman's treasure.
Good work
They really do. Very peaceful and the morning coffee is always chill.
Hello friends ... I bloody love this channel - James thanks for sharing your life and adventures :-)
Hello farind 🌹
Wow, beautiful as beautiful can get and tropical as it gets..love the water falls
Very nice
Wow, what wonderful exploring country! I have been a mussel farmer for over 40 years growing the European blue mussel, Mytillus edulis on ropes and poles and very tasty they are too especially as "Moules fancies" in butter, garlic with breadcrumbs!
Pure escapism after the daily grind in the real world. Thank you James and Rhonda, all the best from UK 👍
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Fantastic video. Love your discovery of what an totally awesome little town Havelock is. It's our home base as we have been exploring the Marlborough Sounds over the last couple of years on our boat - and we still have plenty of bays still yet to explore! Love following your adventure James and Rhonda, maybe we will cross paths out their in the sounds! You will certainly hear us before you see us at an anchorage, 4 kids, 4 birds and a very old dog onboard all enjoying this new found sense of freedom!!!!!!
It’s a wonderful place to cruise and I can see how it would offer years of exploration
Hullo James and Rhonda. It's too late now, but if you'd walked along that same track at night, and looked under banks in damp places, you would have found yourself some amazing glow worms. I've seen them myself. Thank you again for sharing your experiences. We here in Nz do have an amazing country. Thanks for taking us on the journey. Cheers.
You and Rhonda are the coolest cats! I am enjoying these fun videos!! I need to see this place it looks magical!
The waterfall sound is such a balm on my brain.
Hello farind 🌹 a wooden boat building
Very jealous of the beautiful scenery on the water and the land. Good to see you and Rhonda hitting it off. Enjoy!

Great vid James! Stay safe and fair winds.

Just found your videos and they're so great. They remind me of my home country of Bermuda and sailing around the reefs as a kid. You do a fantasic job documenting everything, real glad I found your channel! I'll be supporting on the Patreon as well. Looking forward to more adventures James!
I sailed into Bermuda in 2016 on a delivery, a really wonderful country !

Really nice you guys
Hope you keep on sailing together
Good times 🎉 living the life
Thanks!
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
welcome Rhonda, you are a good fit on this channel. And, James, it is fun to watch you smitten. ;-)
That was fun, except for the pool under the waterfall. I felt for you James, I remember how cold those shaded pools are compared to the water of the sea. Havelock has only ever been a name on a map for me, now I know about the many ways of muscles the place has become bucket-list worthy. Thank you James and Rhonda.
Havelock was a great little stop, perfect sort of end of the road place to visit and buy more groceries before heading back into the wild
Pretty cool place.
I loved the map at the end.
The mussel pot is an awesome place to eat. I'm glad you went there.
Before I started watching RUclips sailing channels I didn't know I lived in a cold country. (I also didn't know there was such a thing as "winterizing" a boat.)
Great tour of the sounds. Lots of useful information for if I ever make it down there.
Oh James, I would be in Greenlip mussel heaven. I so love those NZ mussels - so totally delish. I always try to have a feed of them when in NZ.
That bushwalk you guys went on was lovely and so similar to what it’s like here in Tassie.
Rhonda certainly has fitted in so well into your sailing life. She is a keeper. Well done 👍
Nice!
Thanks to all family members ❤ Amazing very nice Boat ⛵ love you my friend channel
Hi James, and Rhonda isn’t in amazing. You can travel the world then all the sudden you find someone with the same spirit as yourself just love the passion for travel and exploring you look fantastic together. I love all the smiles keep up the good work it’s going to be sad. When Rhonda moves on, keep up the good work love the videos Cliff from Logan City Queensland, Australia
Spoiler alert :) Rhonda moved aboard fulltime once I reached Australia
Y'all hook up..best life ever on the water..I'm commercial fisherman and my life's been the oceans
You need a companion and she looks like a honest and friendly person..
I fishing now out in the ocean..this is day 12.. staying about a month out..we are about 275 miles out to the east of Cape Hatteras north Carolina.. awesome night not to rough.
@@SailorJames yesssssssssss!!!
Recently found the channel. Have sailed in the sounds a couple of times. I love seeing you in those places I've been. Love the Cape Jackson tides over the reef hey? Now that I've almost retired, we'll be spending next summer there and Abel Tasman pottering about. All the best
The sounds are such an amazing cruising ground, so much to see !
Rhonda makes u try things you would normally not do..😂
You 2 are great
dang those other boats just flying, crazy
Yeah it was wild and the shallows were soooo close to us but can’t be seen on video
Tourism NZ surely owes you- cruisers and vanlifers have done more to share NZ than anyone.
@@SailorJames we have just uploaded a "navigating the havelock channel" video on our channel - may have been a help before you headed through...... ruclips.net/video/thFm3QrTKWA/видео.html
@@SailorJames We recently uploaded a guide to the Havelock Channel on our youtube page, would love to hear your feedback on how we did and whether it would have been useful to you prior to tackling it. I tried to post the link but the comment disappeared, but it's the latest video so easy to find.
So many more great spots to visit in NZ. There is so much more to see than you have visited but i guess there are many many more other special spots to see in the world and we have so little time while on this mortal coil. Really enjoy your channel. You are living the dream. Rhonda is a keeper btw...but I figure you already know that. ;).
Yeah I always say “you can’t see it all” so I just enjoy the places I visit and am grateful for what I have experienced
Great episode! I hope you are planning to check out the Abel Tasman and Nelson. Nelson has a great natural harbour and a fantastic marina! Happy sailing!
I spent a lot time in Nelson both before and after these adventures, great spot. I didn’t get a chance to visit Able Tasman
Killin it bubguy
I love how Ronda gently convinces you to do stuff😍😍😍
Which usually involves cold water 🥶
@@SailorJames 🤣🤣🤣🤣great vibe and great channel!!! I love your content❤️
James , You should try and talk Rhonda into staying on board . We haven't seen you this happy since you left California .. Jan's husband here , Marty ,I enjoy your travels ..
Thank you cool video =)

THANKYOU SO MUCH FOR SHOWING ME THIS MAJESTY 😁
LOVE YOU GUYS🛡️🛡️❤️❤️
The water fall was great , Wife and I laughed allot.
Keep up the good work on vids. Maybe a bigger boat in the future ?
We don’t need a bigger boat. Most people don’t need a bigger boat.
thats right Rhonda make him live more pull him into the waterfall with you lol. love to see how this channel has changed with you being there and seeing how happy he is now.
Yes! As if, little people will pop out at any time!
Mussel town! I hope all is well with you's fellas. :)
I live Hawaii and missed u as u sailed by. hope to see u next time bra.
"If there were no breeze it would be heaven"......in the roaring forties...yep.
Still a true statement
Get yourself a Havelock MUSSEL pie. They are to die for....
She's a good helmsman!
Happy birthday James 4/11 ? :: me 4/11/63 Aries. Hello Ronda nice companion to the channel, beautiful. Safe travels, hold fast
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Happy Birthday 🎉🎂 mine is 1975
Atta girl! she got right in.
I’m enjoying following your voyage. Do you plan on coming down to Littleton at some point?
Love the work! I run freehand! James if you run, I'd love to exchange at some point!. We're slowly working our way toward our first boat here near indiantown marina in Florida! Love your inspiration brother! HOLD FAST BROTHER!
James....Oh man you know I love my LA boy, but dam, that waterfall couldn't have been to cold?? lol.... Kiwi is making you look bad....lol... kidding again... but man I thank you for taking me there tonight.. I'll see you on Venmo because I get it!!! However here in Cape Cod/Boston area we are launching shortly and you know what that means!!!!WOOOOT WWOOOOT..
You would be wrong. It was almost as cold as the water I swam in in Greenland and I am not so macho that I feel I need to pretend that it’s not cold
At night, that rock face @14:20mins is just a wall of Glow Worms. Never seen so many.
Awesome !!!!
When your trolling you will catch Kahwai or kingfish if your real lucky. Blue cod or snapper you will catch if at anchor or drifting.
i love you from morocco :-)
You two crazy kids are just too cute!!

18:09 Come on James, you let the lady down! Man up and get in that waterfall!
I am allergic to being miserable and my masculinity isn’t so fragile that I need to prove myself by sitting in cold water 😂
U made the right decision to get in the water with the lady, as weak as it was LOL.
💨 ⛵️ ❤
sometimes I close my eyes and imagine living a life like yours, i envy you so much ⛵ ❤ I think it's not easy...but
I know what you mean, I felt that way for many years before I managed to head off to sail fulltime
That engine sounds rough. Much respect that you're doing this. Did you repair the rudder? I may have missed that part.
That’s what diesel engines sound like and if I hadn’t repaired the rudder how would I be driving the boat?
@@SailorJames last I saw you had ratchet straps holding the rudder together and I just assumed it was fixed but was hoping you had an episode showing the fix. You probably do I just never saw it. I grew up on a farm driving diesel equipment my whole life and later worked my way through college as a mechanic. I swear that engine doesn't sound right but let's hope it's just this phone that makes it sound that way.
Every Yanmar 2GM20F sounds exactly like this.

@@SailorJames Thanks for the link. I just started watching a couple days ago.
Hey James, wehre do you buy the UV longsleeves?
You can buy them from most fishing shops or order online , I have lots from various brands and love them
Hey James. I know this was filmed a while ago. Could you tell me what month? I’m just trying to sus the water temps as I was up there fishing in November. Cheers mate, love the channel
This was from early January
When its that still on the water but the Bush is singing with insects and birds .... definately an argument for electric outboards ...
🧙🏼♂️🌌
I love electric outboards not only for their silence but also they are sooo light. But like all electric motors, far too short of range for me to want onboard. If I had a bigger boat I would have both electric and gas outboards onboard
@@SailorJames
They have the power...it's just the battery tech that's due for a boost.... That's incoming with Li Sulpher or Al based chemistries. Estimate is up to 5 times capacity.🤞🏼
You can regen charge under sail if you've the right set up. One of the big 60ft carbon racers uses
Two 25kw saildrive units to generate power for its systems and racing Nav computers.. it can also power itself in and out of port to its start line. They reckon each motor generator generates the equivalent performance to a high torque 35-45hp diesel engine.
What's needed is one of the new generation compact high efficiency light wt ICE generator motors either a Liquid piston multifuel rotary or the Durham university two cylinder four opposed shuttle piston design they whole things the size of two shoe boxes including tank and exhaust and kicks out @.24- 34 kw.hr... run in series to charge batteries and or run propulsion motors. Both probably have 50-60 parts in the motors Incl fasteners... Plus you can hold them in your hands. 🤯 Take a look if you get
a rainy day...even a twenty five footer could run a hybrid set up.
The fuel saving and other advantages come from the motor only ever needing to run at its Stoichiometric optimum . 😎🧙🏼♂️.
Are you guys in love❤ ❤?????are you!!! Are you??? 😅❤❤❤
What sailing ship is your back tattoo?
A Spanish Galleon
@@SailorJames I will not need to go watch videos of Spanish Galleons. It is fun to dive into Google Earth at all your stops and view all the pics people post.
I have no tattoos and am really not interested in them, but when I saw your back (maybe in another video) I thought that was the best tattoo I have ever seen.

Muito legal só Nice you and your friend I love you and now you don’t stay alone ❤so good love Hhonda
Two lunatics 😂
Have you seen the movie " The Illustrated Man"?
No but I know of it
Are you still in New Zealand James
No, I am in Australia now 👍🏻
@SailorJames well I'm glad you made it to the south island so many people sailing around the world only explore the top of the north island. Btw love what you're doing keep up the good work
Ive been threw buds, wish my instructor loved me as much as she loves u. cold water is painful but will separate the men from the boys.
I have swam in Greenland. I don’t need to ever prove myself again
Looks like you've found heaven. Why ever leave?
Because there are countless “heavens” to see around the world
Love yr vids mate,, but I would love it even more if every video was Numbered in order of upload. Just simple easy to see Episode numbers.
All thumbnails look the same over time.
Literally every single episode has an episode number
@@SailorJames sorry I should have elaborated,, possibly a number on the thumbnail would be helpful. Then I wouldn’t have to open each episode then click the more button to reveal details.
It would be easier to see in thread format. Thanks.
You make it sound like you don't have cold in the USA. try, Vermont New Hampshire, Illinois, Wisconsin, north Dakota, Colorado, Montana, Washington state, New York. Etc etc.
I think you need a hug bro
dude... shave once...JUST ONCE! ...may be good for the channel, i dare you bro
Sorry bro, you aren’t my type ✌🏻
C'mon...he don't need a haircut, or need a real job!
I have a real job and you just paid my salary with your comment and view 😂
Well here's another comment... every little bit helps, right😂
And another
Please, do a haircut👀👀👀👀👀
Do you walk around the street telling people how to wear their hair?
Polite response J, not how I would've. But then you've got more class than I. Stay safe dude, may fair winds blow through your hair and keep your sails full. Crackerjack.
I've missed quite a few episodes because I've been travelling myself, nice to meet Rhondda, how is your engine doing? 🤘👍
When this was filmed the engine was doing great
I know envy is one of the seven deadly sins, but god damn I'm envious of this lifestyle. Here's to smooth sailing brother!
you both look verrrrrrrry happy.... could it be longer than a 16 day stay for Rhonda in the future we wonder 🤔
