When the Southern Cross took off from the mud flats, it flew to Derby in NWWA where my father happened to be while traveling from the Kimberley to Central West WA to continue drilling for water for the farms. He was a keen photographer and photo'd the Southern Cross in Derby with the United Kingdom rego no. and the G painted on the fuselage. The plane flew back to Sydney where it was registered under Australian Rego No. and the VH letters which it still has to this day in the display hanger at Brisbane airport. I have that photo in my collection and is my connection to the "Coffee Royal" story.
Brilliant. I really learnt so much from this episode. Great story, why hasn’t there been a movie made about this National historical event, it’s packed with action. Thanks Les, well put together really appreciate it! Well done 👍 you nailed it bro
Thanks ABC for uploading this, I remember watching series 1 & 2 here in the UK in the late 80s, early 90s but I don't think we got series 3. You can see the technological advances from series 2 1990 to series 3 1996 or 1997? Sat phones, better hf radios. True legend Les Hiddins, not fake like Bear Grylls etc. The nearest we have is Ray Mears who met Les in one of his shows in the 2000s. Anyway I'll be watching all this season 3. Fantastic. BTW how come Les voice isn't as gravelly, did he smoke hundreds of cigs back in the 80s 🤣
This man has me captivated with Australia n I wish television was as interesting n thought provoking as we had it from the 70 s thru the 90 s .. Sunday viewing with a roast dinner was it fir me..glad your back mate 👍 👌..
What a fella Les Hiddins, love to meet this man, big respect for the camera/video crew, way ahead of their time, and all production team, fantastic work from them all. Andy in Blackburn Lancashire UK.
Great story, bully beef bombs dropping from heaven lol..I love this program, I also watched the yiberda yiberda man Rex Hunt back in the early 90s..I love watching anything from Australia, my favourite film is Walkabout, it was made the year I was born..
i used to watch this when new on tv Tanami desert hot then freezing over night -2cel working on at the gold rush mine 3days temp job up a tower my hands froze took 1/2hr till i could work again forgot the gloves but used them after that night shift darwin i learnt and ate a lot bush fruit & sea shells one small cone tasted like pistachio i ate 100's of them as tide went out they crawl over rocks was best time to get - and these small 2-3ft dolphins that came around low tide white or red stripe on side never can find out there name or any pics info on google but they swam around me within 2feet always knocked off a bunch bannas grown wild when you find them
There was a 6 year gap between seasons 2 and 3 while there was only 2 years between seasons 1 and 2 and they were both awesome. Definitely could have had another season around 1993
Great story of survival but at huge cost. The loss of the 2 rescuers changed the rules of aviation that ended up saving Many lives in the future and is saving lives to this day.
Wise words. When flying abroad, it amazes me how little other passengers are prepared - lack of basic survival knowledge, lack of basic survival equipment (including on their person), & poor clothing choices (including footwear). Majority of "civilised" humans are too dumb.
I see Bush Tucker man was wearing Birkenstock boots long before they because international popular. Here my family sits in North Western BC, Dec 21/2022 all owning a pair of Brown leather Birkenstock books exactly like Bush Tucker man is wearing in this series filmed 30 years ago.
Seasons 1 and 2 are terrific. The biggest mistake of the series was changing from simple adventuring to a historic retelling of events in season 3. Les Hiddins is a legend
UM, EXCUSE ME but didnt you say, They couldn't take off AND they had NO FUEL, Like SERIOUSLY, if they had no fuel, of course they couldn't take off, regardless of being bogged or not.
Thank you ABC for releasing the series on RUclips. It's a great show that everyoneshould be free to watch
I could listen to Les tell stories all day 👍
I'm from London and, inspired by Les, spent 3 months camping and exploring central and eastern Australia. Thanks LES.
how did it go?
I’ve been watching these series for a month now, it’s the best tv show I’ve watched in years
You're a natural story teller Les..
My favourite childhood documentary series.
Boy this takes me back and relaxes me

I loved watching this series years ago, great to see it again. Amazing guy and great presenter 😊 N.Ireland

My favourite ABC series. Thank you
It's such a shame they only did 3 seasons over the span of 8 years with Les.
Quality over quantity
There was a 6 year gap between seasons 2 and 3 while there was only 2 years between seasons 1 and 2 and they were both awesome. Definitely could have had another season around 1993
I have watchted everything om Malcolm Douglas channel here on YT and got really fascinated about the Kimberleys! 🙂. Maybe time for a visit!
Awesome content 👏 👌
Well done ABC for the educational program 👍 👍
Very good sir.
Brilliant! Should be part of our school curriculum.
Great story!
Thanks Aunty.
thank you
I used to watch with my Dad 25 years ago
Great story of survival but at huge cost. The loss of the 2 rescuers changed the rules of aviation that ended up saving Many lives in the future and is saving lives to this day.
look into the exploration of Australia , dozens of men died.
The rules of aviation are written in blood.
Best!
Definitely….👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
what a champ
Wise words.

Great story, but very sad too.
cool story
A shift to digital and an instant loss of cinematic magic but still a classic
I don’t think it makes any difference at all and thoroughly enjoyed it

It was a good story. I had no idea.
Just found this on the RUclips' in ,2024'

Obviously when the search party found them they dropped fuel and food to them and when the mudflats tried out they can take off again.
2:24
Now bring back D/W
Mooore
Now we have smart phones.
Thank you
