The Bush Tucker Man is an Australian National Treasure. So impressed how respectful he is with the Aboriginal people and how they are respectful of him. Bloody Awesome.
Yank, here. I have grown such a profound respect and interest in the native people of Australia. Thanks to this show and Malcolm Douglas. True survivors with an amazing creation story.
There were a few other guys like Les back in the day mate, search RUclips for the Leyland Brothers and Alby Mangels (okay, Alby doesn't quite meet the criteria, but damn he had some attractive young ladies accompany him on his adventures...but in 1987 Judy Green was something else)
What a bloke. I remember watching as a kid in the UK and dreaming of being out bush. I'm lucky enough now to spend most of my time in the WA bush. cheers Les, you inspired a global generation mate.
There is so much that can be learnt from the first peoples of this country, they were/are true masters of their environment. Sad to think that their knowledge might be lost.
Absolutely love this episode. Tony and Les are two amazing amazing people. Tony is so soft spoken and gentle. Les is absolutely at home in bush and respectful with first national people.
Yes indeed, the elderly gentleman is truly a Real Gentleman! Reminds me of several old Aboriginal acquaintences from my long age youth. Sadly many of the current generation are not of the same calibre. But that applies to all colours and creeds these days.
ABC, if you have original film and resources PLEASE remaster this in 1080p or higher. These documentaries are profoundly important to Australia and history, I would love to relive watching them again if they were in high resolution
It was watching les doing this great documentary on oz that made me travel australia in the late 90s,had the time of my life.never really got to the more remote areas, but I may still go yet.
Loved to watch his programmes together with my dad who was a ww2 veteran...he loved to see al those survival "info" because he was a POW at the Birma railway for 3,5 years ...and survived
i started watching this in the uk in the 90s.i was working in a hot-house with some of these plants.learned a lot from the program.i did try pandana, which was cabbage tasting.cheers les.
when i was growing up i loved this show. A few years ago for some reason i re-watched everything and a switch flicked in my brain. i thought i would do some research to see what native plants might have been used around here besides the obvious fishing. I grew up running around the bush in my area. East coast australia. I remember finding aboriginal carvings around the place. i have since gone out and identified 11 native bush tucker plants. ive tried many of them when i was absolutely sure what they were. Some were quite good, some not so much, but i still find it fascinating.
The work Les has done will be looked at for many years to come, especially by the black fellas who are losing their knowledge as these old fellas like Donny pass. It never ceases to amaze me how the central desert region aboriginals survived out there for 1000's of years. I've been out in those regions and i couldn't imagine what it would be like to be there on foot living offthe land there, it's an amazing feat of survival
Les you are amazingly talented mate I learn so much from you. Watching this video reminded me of a trip we had up to Coral bay back in the 1980’s and a tribe came from bush and the kids had never seen the ocean . When they saw us in the water they all charged in yelling were going to wet you Mr so I dived in 😂 and then the fun started . They were asking me to throw them into the water . I obliged and we all had a bloody good time . I still remember that day like it happened yesterday .
Tommy George, the community leader, was so genuinely polite and charming, especially when sharing the palm heart at the end of the episode. So amazing that our hero was able to work with these sorts of people and seek the wisdom gained by thousands of years of life in areas that appear so inhospitable to us. Not shocked the American airmen perished - in fact, I’m surprised any of them made it. It’s a shame they weren’t provided with the right things to survive and effect rescue.
The religious beliefs of many Aboriginal People cause them great superstitious trepidation in dealing with dead people. From going near where someone has died to speaking of their dead relatives. Stupid I know, but no more so than the dumb beliefs of other Mumbo Jumbo Creeds - like Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists or you name it!
Because the bushtucker man started alot bush food research they improvise in the army handy if stranded in a war zone some plants are simular overseas anyway wont find many city folk going outback
Related to other toads that are miraculously not as poisonous. Why did they choose the most poisonous toad to do the job others could have done more effectively?
Thought I would point anyone who enjoys this kinda thing at Chris Bamman. obviously inspired by Les. alot less talking, but a bloke out in the bush. He's not got the army behind him, but cathartic if your stuck in the city and cant get your boots dirty.
The Great Australian show back before this country had lost its way here we are in 2024 people are still destroying the planet and their local environment a sad indictment on the intelligence of Australians
Does anyone know if the surviving US Airmen who went in a Westerly direction with the others and survived wrote about his experience trying to survive? Does anyone know his name? It would be fascinating to hear his story.
@@kristinehayes4885 Correct. The highest rank in the Order of Australia that can be bestowed after 2015 is Companion. An Australian citizen can still become a Knight/Dame via a substantive award of an imperial honour from Great Britian for service to them (or the world in general) deemed worthy of it by the Brits. Same as the French handed out la Légion d'honneur to old Aussie Servicemen.

The levels of nostalgia this show brings me are only matched by its levels of awesome and cultural awareness.

Knowledge and entertaining you can't beat that for value.
So enjoying watching this again so many years later.
There is so much that can be learnt from the first peoples of this country, they were/are true masters of their environment. Sad to think that their knowledge might be lost.

Ta ABC, I’ve spent years watching this on random RUclips channels. Now I’ve finally got somewhere to download it from all in one big go.

Nice to watch for a lot of reasons!
Great series!
So good!
Awesome
Love this
Men like Les Hiddins, are far and few between and hard to cultivate these days. He serves our country well!
The old "Stay where you are" survival advice would have had them all rescued in less than 2 weeks.
brilliant
Bush tucker would be healthier than what's in the store.
I was born in Alice Springs and was raised in wilcannia, barkennj and arren
For those that maybe unaware ... the crown on les's epaulette @ 29:00 represents his rank as Major within the Australian Army ...
huge Fan Here !!
I hate what the ABC has become, but I like Les more so I watch.
Australianos siempre tuyo lo que viva.
after few episodes I think im ready to tuck into some bush.
Love that old fella.
what is the name of the bird calling in the background 26-36 onwards
Now thanks to men like Les. Men can survive. In. The bush. He as worked. For. Army. Listing. Edible. Food. Etc !!!

I want a snack map of the world 😍 imagine that😲🙈🤞🏽 . Wonderful way of survival
How do you know which Billabongs have got crocs and which one's don't
Billabong: ox-bow lake
This is 2022 what is the concern of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders seeing people that have since died we see it in media all the time?

Stupid I know, but no more so than the dumb beliefs of other Mumbo Jumbo Creeds - like Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists or you name it!
Whatever happened to these shows ABC?
Because the bushtucker man started alot bush food research they improvise in the army handy if stranded in a war zone
some plants are simular overseas anyway wont find many city folk going outback
SOUNDS ALMOST LIKE AN ALABAMA OR MISSISSIPPI ACCENT!!!
Related to other toads that are miraculously not as poisonous. Why did they choose the most poisonous toad to do the job others could have done more effectively?
legand
5:41 wooow
NO SUPERMARKETS FOR HUNDREDS OF MILES, TYPE OF THING.
NO DORITOS HERE.
you can actually eat cane toad legs if you take the skin of them and then wash them
Thought I would point anyone who enjoys this kinda thing at Chris Bamman. obviously inspired by Les. alot less talking, but a bloke out in the bush. He's not got the army behind him, but cathartic if your stuck in the city and cant get your boots dirty.
Pass the nohow on
I THOUGHT THERE WOULD BE MORE KANGAROOS IN AUSTRALIA.
The Great Australian show back before this country had lost its way here we are in 2024 people are still destroying the planet and their local environment a sad indictment on the intelligence of Australians

Bush tucker.
Spent many years watching Les. Bit risky sticking your hands in holes. don't know what's there, but I suppose a real survival situation you'd have to
I could not watch this video because of the bloody awful music!
Why hasn't Les got a Knighthood yet?
Because we don't that anymore.
