Ep.179 A New Journey Begins - Mexico

  • We begin our journey on the day we are obliged to get out of the United States. We left with a crew of 3, me the beautiful Margarida and Tim the davit man. It is not the best time of year to sail across the gulf but there are no tropical disturbances in our path so we head out. We know there is going to be little wind for the first couple of days but we have plenty of fuel and an immaculate motor with less than 1000 hours so we believe we are ok. Unfortunately the motor dies and the fun begins.

Could use the fuel pump (or a pump) to circulate the fuel through a filter (T shirt or ?) and back into the fuel tank scrubbing a lot of the particles out. Calm seas are great for that and 5 gal buckets are a must on any boat. They have so many uses. Of course it is nice to check and fix all of this before your first (sea trial)... sail.

  • @twiper

Regarding the fuel consumption you can get a lower consumption by renovate or adjust the diesel nozzles, easy done by a workshop. Also check the valve clearance.

Regarding the high diesel consumption I don't remember if you have talked about white smoke or steam from your exhaust, but if you have high consumption it can also be a blocked exhaust elbow / riser. A common sign of a blocked exhaust elbow is the engine have a hard time to take rpm. and it can't reach max rpm. eg. 3200 rpm. - if you also see white smoke when the engine is warm the cooling system is possibly clocked up at the elbow where it mixes exhaust and water.

  • @Jonny_The_Organism

Towards the end…engine trouble (lidisfarne band song from the 80’s,,and I know you’re not Douglas Badger…but I was thinking because I had a similar problem with my Mitzi… filter….outlet was larger than inlet after being given a service….had to go great lengths to find the problem…investigation led me to two different engine sizes and two different filters….and there ain’t much difference but the tiny difference meant the difference between getting somewhere and going nowhere. So yeah man…tiny differences mean the difference! 😉👍😎

Mate nothing worse then shit in the fuel, reminds me when I had my 33 footer ran out of diesel and no bloody wind and the closest port (well a port / harbor that was safe enough to sail into without bouncing across rocks and sand bars not to forget current) was 3 hours away.
