Ep.180 A New Journey Begins - Mexico Part 2

  • We twice try to cross the Yucatan channel where there is a strong 5 knot northerly current but both times get thrown back north into the Gulf of Mexico because of little wind. Our back up plans are Cuba and Key West since the current is already taking us there but some wind arrives and we push further south to counteract the strong current. Third time lucky? The wind fills to 12 knots, the best up until then was 8, and we hit the current hard and get to within 20 miles of Isla Mulheres and then the wind promptly dies. We begin to drift north and Margarida gets on the radio but it seems the only help now is the dinghy with a 3.5 horse power outboard.

    With small outboards, it's usually a carburetor problem. Either water in the fuel bowl or a plugged jet.

    Buy a kicker plate and get a long shaft outboard you can throw on the back for emergencies. I had one save me a couple of times when the main engine decided to break down. You don't have two engines in monohulls generally.

    It is great to see you making life happen and rebirthing an old yacht into an expedition vessel. Thumps up to Jorge for displaying the true nature of a yachty, which is to lend a hand. Bet Tim will remember that trip more than the others. Did you see the look of pleasure from Tim when you handed him a cold beer, that why we have fridges on yachts. A cold beer is like meditation for the mind when trying to fix shit, also I bet the wife will be a happy camper with a cold drink. Keep going, nice to see you have upgraded to a mono (real boat). I look forward to your take on South America.

    You probably know by now. But just incase, for future reference. Any raw water cooled motor on a boat will flood back if you crank it to long and it doesn’t start. That is because when you are cranking it over, it is pumping water and filling the exhaust but it doesn’t have enough pressure to blow the water out past the exhaust elbow so eventually it floods back. Something to keep in mind when prolonged cranking.

    • @stephenburnage7687
      @stephenburnage7687 6 лет назад +1

      One of the first things my mechanic taught me, too. Besides, it drains the battery. So my rule is that if it doesn't start promptly, don't keep cranking!

    • @thatsshowbiz6438
      @thatsshowbiz6438 6 лет назад +1

      He mentioned that this motor was fresh water cooled unlike his motors on Longreef in this vid or the last?

    • @Accuratemarine
      @Accuratemarine 6 лет назад +2

      Same scenario. It still uses raw water to remove heat from the heat exchanger and pump it out the exhaust.

    • @Accuratemarine
      @Accuratemarine 6 лет назад +7

      Ignorance is bliss.....
      Water is drawn from the sea and passed by a heat exchanger to remove heat from the coolant which is circulating the engine block (In a car the heat exchanger would be the radiator). The warm seawater is then injected past the exhaust elbow so it can cool the exhaust gasses and muffle the engine exhaust (so very necessary).
      Because the boat is floating on water and the engine is installed below the water line the exhaust needs to exit above the waterline and it relies on the pressure from the exhaust gasses to do this. Since the exhaust is uphill from the engine and gravity pulls water down once the exhaust mixer is full (a small tank that is placed after the engine in the exhaust system to mitigate this issue), because no exhaust gasses pushed it over the hump from repeated cranking over, water has nowhere to go but into the engine through the exhaust valves.

    • @mikem54321
      @mikem54321 6 лет назад +12

      Easy solution--just shut off the raw water intake seacock while attempting to start an engine that does not want to start. If it starts, then open the seacock.

    Well shit happens and you have the t-shirt plucky ha ha. You were kicked out of the country and had to rough out the shakedown cruise, and sure enough there was anticipated problems. But there is nothing wrong with asking for help. I know you will make the motor your own and fix up the silly design flaws. It will all come good.
    You seem a little frazzled. Just remember you are now doing what you worked so hard for. You are living on the water with the girl of your dreams. The water is still on the side of the boat its supose to be on so all good. And the sailing community is a community i so much look forward to getting involved with. Such amazing people. ..

    When you buy a used boat assume the engine (and fuel tanks) have NEVER been "properly" taken care of. An engine (and all electronics, lights etc) should be run at least 1/2 hr EVERY WEEK. Gas engines should also have a water / fuel separator on them and pre-filters as well as fuel filters to help keep them running (and filter the fuel as it goes into your tank/s just to be super safe because your life depends on your engine running when you really need it)! Also, always have your dinghy ready to go. Imagine trying to blow it up when your ship is on fire or sank and you are in the water with a flat dinghy (good luck there)... Be ALERT on watch, not laying back or reading a book etc... Ahhhh, some people are just not, well, let's say have and use common sense and if you totally lack it, are always stoned or ???, then stay off the water or you may easily die on the water... next time... It is not all and only about filming butts n beer... as captain,,, lives are in your hands... Responsibility!

    How did Trump make it difficult?

  • @Josef_R
    @Josef_R 6 лет назад

    Where are you getting that Trump has made it difficult to go to Cuba? Nothing has changed in years regarding the 12 exceptions for U.S. vessels to enter Cuba. Obama’s normalization policy only affected Cuban-Americans sending money to family in Cuba, nothing at all to do with travel, the requirements remained the same.

    • @SAILINGintoFREEDOM
      @SAILINGintoFREEDOM  6 лет назад

      I was told it had changed due to Trump, we sought permission as a backup but to no avail....well we didn't fall in any of the categories

    • @Josef_R
      @Josef_R 6 лет назад

      Well, neither of you are U.S. citizens and are both free to go to Cuba any time you like. Your boat's documentation isn't something that would be an issue for the 12 exemptions. Why didn't you document is Australian anyway?

    • @SAILINGintoFREEDOM
      @SAILINGintoFREEDOM  5 лет назад +1

      USCG said our boat is a little piece of USA and it isnt allowed to go unless within the exceptions which we couldnt get in under. It doesn't make a difference if I am an Aussie. I am simply regurgitating what they told us. Check for yourself.
