The Present Perfect Tense | English Grammar Lesson

  • This lesson is an overview of the present perfect tense
What it looks like, how to use it and when to use it!
    Structure:
Subject + have/has + main verb (past participle form)
    _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
If you don’t feel confident using the present perfect tense in English yet… There are probably a few reasons why!
You need to know the past participle form of English verbs... And that can be pretty tricky with irregular verbs! 😳
And you need to understand how to use this tense! Perhaps you feel unsure about when to use the present perfect and when to use the past simple tenses.
I will explain all of this inside this lesson.
    _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
When using the present perfect tense, you need an auxiliary verb that helps your main verb to function.
In the perfect tenses, the verb (to) have is always the auxiliary verb.
In the present perfect tense, the main verb is in the past participle form.
This is not difficult for regular past tense verbs. For regular verbs, the past participle form of the verb is the same as the past tense verb, so you just add -ed!
But irregular verbs are different and the only way to learn the past participle form is to learn them individually.
Past simple or present perfect tense?
To answer this question you need to think about time. Finished time and unfinished time.
Think about ‘last week’. That’s a good example of finished time. Last week is finished, it’s over.
Yesterday, last week, last month, last year, 1991 - these are all examples of finished time… Time that is complete.
What about ‘this week’? Is this week finished? No! Not yet. That is an example of unfinished time. There’s still more of this week to come. It’s not finished yet.
When you are talking about a time period that has finished, use the past simple.
When you are talking about a time period that is unfinished… Like today, this week, this month, this year, use the present perfect.
Watch this lesson to learn when to use the present perfect and when to use the past simple tense.

It's because she's just going on about 3 verb types and grammar rules, but she doesn't explain when you use it and what it actually means. She talks about "Unfinished time" But that's not a good way to describe it. You don't need a time word at all. "I have seen too many youtube videos" is a perfectly good sentence.

Native English speaker here! I've been trying to wrap my head around what the present perfect tense was for my Spanish class, and hearing the explanation in terms of English really helped! It's hard to understand a grammar rule when you don't even know what it is in your native language. I know I'm not the target audience for this channel, but still, thanks! You're a great teacher!

Hey! This is a great way to learn the Present Perfect!
One thing for students to remember is this; We use the PRESENT PERFECT when we want to talk about an action that has happened ANYTIME before (and up to) the present. For the SIMPLE PAST we talk about an action that happened at a SPECIFIC point in time (NOT ANYTIME).
E.g PRESENT PERFECT - I have never been to England (ANYTIME in my life) vs PAST SIMPLE - I went to England last year (Last year = specific time).
We can also use the present perfect to talk about actions that have happened many times in the past. E.g I have been to England 3 times. (In my life).

Why do you teach the present perfect tense?
Please, be kind to think about the aspect of the verb which can be continuous, perfective, or unmarked. I am talking about expressing the past, the presence, and the future. In my opinion "tense" is useless to how to express oneself. There are 16 tenses if I am not wrong but only two forms of the verb - present and past. There is no form which expresses the future, instead there is a construction.

    👋 Emma!
I'm a Japanese. I always enjoy watching your videos.
Would you do me a favor?
I always want to study the deference between "present perfect simple" and "present perfect continuous" with your video.🤗

The present perfect continuous is subject+have/has+verb 𝒊𝒏𝒈 but I’m not really sure about the the present perfect simple I’ve never heard that one. The present perfect is different than the perfect simple

The present perfect simple tense focuses on the process of the action, while the present perfect tense tends to focus on the result.

Marvelous video. I've watched your videos to brush up on my English because I've noticed my English skills are quite limited. Although I thought it was acceptable previously. A reviewing is essential to communicate far better.
