  • Wiggle GIFs? Anaglyphs?! What is a 3D image anyway, and why should you care?! In this episode, we take a look at the rise of stereoscopic photography in the era of the Nintendo 3DS, including the odd halflife of "wiggle GIFs". Digressions include Spy Kids 3, Gemini Man, and the musician Mura Masa.

Hello everyone, thanks for checking out our video on 3DS Photography! Two quick things: This episode contains some flickering/flashing images, due to the nature of wiggle GIFs, so feel free to listen to the audio version of this episode if that's a concern. You can search "Computer Lab Highjinks" on iTunes to find the show's podcast feed. As well, a huge chunk of this video focuses on 3D movies, which wasn't intentional but that's just where the research and conversation took us. You can skip to 18:17 if you just want to skip straight to the part where we look at 3DS photos. Hope everyone enjoys this episode!

Dunno about 3D in film, always gave a massive headache and in the teathre the screen was always much darker than in 2D screening. Not worth the cost. However, where I found its value was in Monster Hunter 4U and similar games in the 3DS, where discerning distances was important. 3DS' 3D made it perfect. Simularly it's great in Sega 3D titles.

It definitely made a difference for gauging depth during gameplay! I didn't realize how much Super Mario 3D Land used the 3D functionality until I played it on my 2DS, and my goodness, it's quite a different game when you can't sense depth in the same way. Particularly in those bonus rooms.

I'm neutral towards 3D imagery in anything, but I personally can't take stereoscopy in screens or the cinema well for some reason.

Aren't the wiggle gifs in the Mura Masa video shot on the Nishika n8000? Kinda feels that way to me, but I could be wrong

This was a very good video, but there are a few errors. The 1953 House of wax wasn't originally in anaglyph, it's a common misconcepction that the 50s 3D movies were projected with red and blue glasses in mind, but that's not the case at all, they actually used polarized glasses and filters the same way we use them today! There's a very good article on the 3Dfilmarchive website talking about it and other 3D myths. The proof is that there were a number of black and white 3D movies at the time that couln't have been projected in color.
Either way I really enjoyed your conversation, is not often that I get to hear two people who are fully inmersed in 3D talk about it and aren't of the opinion of "ooohh it's just a gimmick", I hope in the future you can keep exploring the vast and rich world of stereoscopy :)

I appreciate the correction! I had no idea polarized 3D glasses went that far back, but I’ll go check out that website for sure. It’s certainly a more pleasant effect than wearing anaglyph glasses!
Happy to spread the good word about 3D! Would love to see more directors experiment in interesting ways with the format, and at the very least I hope Adobe brings back 3D support in Premiere so people can experiment.

@@ComputerLabHighjinks Totally, me personally, I live in a sort of hell, because I love 3D movies but I don't really like the 3D movies Hollywood makes. The superhero, special effects filled kind of film; but I go to see them and buy them regardless as they are pretty much the only 3D content on the market. There are a few outliers that maybe can spark your interest; the director Wim Wenders has made four 3D movies, two are documentaries and the other two are Everything will be fine and The beautiful days of Aranjuez, which movies of people talking but using 3D to tell the story, a simple story, without the need of special effects or big budgets. Edgar Pera is other filmmaker who has made a lot of stereo films, he's an underground experimental director from portugal and his 3D films are really something to behold, he actually has uploaded some of them (if not all) to his very own youtube channel, so if you have a capable 3D screen or projector you can enjoy them.
Anyway, all of that to say that 3D is definitely being used with more artistic purposes in mind, but sadly, it's a minority who is using it.

Man, I stumbled upon the True Fantasy video after getting an OG Xbox for Christmas and consequently falling down the Xbox rabbit hole (think I found it via a reddit post), but a busy life took over and I forgot to check back in.
Loving the direction of the channel so far! It makes the part of my brain that thinks Flip Phones are still cool very happy. Hope the niche topics and extended tangents continue.

As you mentioned voice over and hot takes. One of my hottakes is I think the best version of Blade Runner is the Theatrical version with the voiceover.
Really enjoyed this. Weirdly, my best experience of 3D in the cinema was the Underworld movie from 2011-2012. From memory the dark aesthetic of that movie really seemed to pop in 3D. Thats at least what i remember anyway.

I've heard quite a few positive things about the Blade Runner theatrical cut, so it definitely has some fans! I'm glad all the versions of that movie are readily available, it would be a shame if they only released the director's cut. I think I've only seen the Final Cut on DVD, so I'm curious to see the other edits.

@@ComputerLabHighjinks I'm not an expert on the differences, but I do know that the different edits hint at whether Deckard is a replicant differently. Amazing how much minor edits of a movie can change or so much

Those wiggle gifs remind me of a channel called to go find fun where he reviews 3D Blu-rays and to illustrate the 3D, he shows each frame with a wiggle transition, however he interpolates between the two eyes to create a smooth camera slide between the 2 frames. I'd link one of his reviews here but RUclips would block my comment

On another note I am a 3D nut, I love watching 3D movies to the point where I went out and bought a Sony PlayStation 3D display for that purpose. Yes I made sure to watch spy kids 3D in 3D on it, I found the 3D Blu-ray and rented it because I am not paying $200 for the combo pack. And honestly, now is a pretty good time to get into 3D Blu-rays especially since the movies on the format are cheap on the second hand market, and they're usually in really good condition because the cost for entry with so much that only movie buffs could afford the format. And it's possible to watch them on of your headset on a PC by ripping them off the disc and converting them into side by side, it's a bit of a complicated process but works really well. And honestly, I prefer active shower glasses, anaglyph (red/cyan) 3D hurts my eyes. There's also a world in VR Chat called The magic eye museum which is basically a museum of various types of 3D tech, separated into two sections, methods that require glasses, and methods that are glasses free. It's really cool because among the glasses free stuff is the 3DS, holographic prints, and magic eye puzzles. If you ever get into VR chat with a VR headset I recommend checking that world out.

I have a lot to say about 3D movies, And honestly I would love to nerd out about 3D at some point, because I absolutely freaking love it. I am very much in a minority of opinion though and I realize itI All I'll say right now is if you ever log into VR chat with a VR headset there's a world I recommend checking out called The magic eye museum, which is a VR chat world about 3D showing off various forms of stereoscopic 3D. From various glasses free formats like lenticular prints and magic eye puzzles to Anaglyph 3D and modern glasses-based systems.

Just looked up that channel, thanks for the recommendation! You're right, Go Find Fun has a really interesting way of making that camera slide, it helps illustrate the effect. I'm also kind of impressed by how they track down the 3D home releases of these movies, looks like there's a specific streaming service that has them, but almost nothing on physical media. Hopefully these 3D releases become easier to find!

@@ComputerLabHighjinks Yeah, I personally been on the hunt for the 3D version of Soul, because I feel like that movie would look amazing but I just don't know where to find it, illumination seems to put their 3D movies on Vudu, but in order to watch 3D content from there you need to have an actual 3D display on a device that can support it. My Nvidia shield supports it but it doesn't have an optical out so I can't use my surround sound setup when watching 3D stuff on my PlayStation 3D display using it, for the actual discs I just use my Xbox One s which does have an optical out jack on the back
