That's probably because the majority of the people consuming youtube content are doing it on their phones. And on twitch that might be the opposite with the majority or close to it consuming twitch on a pc with an AdBlock. I think the numbers might say people don't immediately leave a stream when ads go up, maybe they alt-tab or switch to a different streamer or get up and bio/snack, but it still reduces the viewer experience and makes them less likely to engage with that channel/platform MORE in the future. Kind of like how a bad movie doesn't make people leave the theatre necessarily but it'll make them less likely to go to the sequel.

But that is the thing. They don’t care if it reduces the viewer experience unless it actually costs numbers in the metric for viewers that the ad streamed too. Twitch is a business trying to make a profit that will satisfy their owners at Amazon. As long as there is not an actual backlash of lost revenues, they simply do not care. It is their job to ride that line.

But he did not take into account the fact that people who REALLY care about ads run an ad blocker. Now in the recent weeks the Ad blockers that exist have started to not really work and all his data was from a time where the people who really cared about Ad did not have to sit through them because the blockers worked. So the real question is what percentage of viewers run an AD blocker. Because i know that i personally will not sit through the amount of Ads that most streamers have i will go watch youtube videos or a movie instead. I would have been included in those numbers of people who did not leave when running ads before though.

Funniest example I have is from a while ago. A local car dealership has been running different ads maybe every 6 months on YT. Normal stuff, "we are running deals on X, come check out Y, we even have Z". Until one ad cycle..... In a display that would best fit in r/TIFU They paid for an ad at the max length to qualify for being unskippable. Then spent the ENTIRE RUNTIME telling everyone about how they specifically made the ad this exact length so nobody could skip it, and stared awkwardly at the camera for the last 3 seconds. These people LITERALLY SPENT MONEY for an unskippable ad, to brag about how they figured out what unskippable ads were..... The next ad cycle never came and the lot is now vacant.

The only reason(s) ads don't affect viewership is because it's so easy to avoid them. Ad-blockers, sub, gift-sub, turbo, streamers choosing not to run ads. I haven't seen a twitch ad in several years

  • @Trout_Nemesis

No doubt Asmon knows his business. But I'm interested if ads have a different impact on other viewer types. Age brackets, content type interest, average duration of viewing any twitch content, loyalty(time spent watching the specific streamer in relation to the total twitch time viewing), etc. As a hypothesis I would guess that younger age brackets leave streams more on ad breaks. But idk maybe thats wrong. I just see a tictok generation losing interest and switching to something else quickly. But that could be wrong. It would be interesting to see what data twitch collects over all streams.

9:00 Actually Asmongold is incredibly wrong here, if no one became a twitch partner, twitch wouldn't lose all their money, instead they would just monetize everyone's streams without paying the streamers anything. Kind of like how youtube changed their policy to allow them to monetize videos from non partnered channels and take 100% of the revenue.

The market for streaming is bigger than ever. and just about anybody can start streaming. There's people constantly coming and going on the platform. 1 streamer, hell even one thousand streamers prbly don't mean anything to them. As they're just one piece of the bigger picture. This goes for any social media company.

  • @justinparker7712

Twitch has a platform and UX problem, not a policy problem. Its just so much easier to engage with the YT interface than Twitch's IMO. RUclips organizes your subscriptions, feeds, offline streams/VODs, in such a way that they seamlessly work together and make me want to chain videos together whereas Twitch is such a pain to navigate unless you're straight to the most popular live streamers for a game, and when important features are called "Twitch Turbo" its hard to take your platform seriously. It may not be popular but YT streaming "looks" professional whereas Twitch looks amateur as a platform, if it were rebranded as "Amazon TV" it would gain A LOT of new customers and non-gamers.

  • @YuJay

RUclips needs to give Streamers more tools, their lack of proper StreamLabs and StreamElements integration really hurts smaller content creators. There are things I love on RUclips (Streams + Videos + Shorts) and I hate (no whisper, using Emotes is no fun, Sub gifting is... kinda limited). I would like to see both plattforms performing well for everybody (the plattforms, the users and the creators).

Having a stream interrupted by a ton of ads kills any enjoyment. Additionally it defeats the purpose of a stream. Streams are meant to continuously flow, not be stopped by a dam for 4 minutes each hour. It was especially annoying when Twitch decided to start showing auto-roll ads even when people were subscribed to a twitch streamer, the entire point of the subscription was to ensure there are no interruptions.
