- Al Stewart and Laurence Juber perform a new 2016 version of his 1960s song Clifton In The Rain, specially filmed to be shown as a greeting to the audience at the 50th Anniversary celebration of the legendary Bristol Troubadour Club which is mentioned in the song.
Al - just named as recipient of the BBC Folk Awards Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017 - was one of the most popular and regular guest artists at the club at 5 Waterloo Street, Clifton Village, Bristol, which ran from 1966 to 1971 and now has a blue plaque to mark it!

This is one of my fav Al songs. House of clocks and Merlin's time are others that come to mind. Just to mention a few. Greeting's from Canada.
Al plays this in double-time throughout - amazing
One of the best Story tellers, Al Steward.
Great post of a great early song of his. Al has always stayed true to his music. No heavy guitar power chords in the late 60's, no disco in the 70's, no synth pop in the 80's, no grunge in the 90's, no rap in the 2000's. His acoustic guitar work , his lyrics and his songs, and that nasally ever British voice never straining, just holding a melody together and telling masterful stories about historical persons and situations, romance, heartbreak, and childhood experiences. His music never gets old. There is always something new during each listen.
Hello I really do appreciate you for being a big fan thank you for your wonderful comments on my post it really means a lot to me.I sincerely hope you never stop listening to my music…..❤️❤️❤️
this man has been a class act all his life
amen
Saw him in Cork Opera House around 2016. Absolutely magical night, one of the most enjoyable gigs I've seen, (and in my 69 years I've been to quite a few). Wonderful, creative accomplished artist with his own intelligent brand of songwriting that sets him apart. Long may he continue to weave his willow strain.
Gerry - I was at this show too...do you happen to have any videos from it?
Even more beautiful with Laurence Juber's playing. A delight. Such a beautiful and gentle song.
He took me to Clifton in the Rain. Will always love you.
The first folk concert I ever went to, back in '69, featured Al as the start guest. And he doesn't sound a jot different from that time. Brilliant then and still brilliant now.
Laurence Juber: great quitarist
Love this song. Thanks to Laurence Juber for making it even more beautiful here
I have always loved this song. We used to regularly see Al Stewart at Les Cousins, happy days. One of my favourites, along with Baleeka Doodle Day.

I came upon this gem by serendipity.
I was merely wanting to listen to Clifton because it has been rattling around the cobwebs of my mind during the past week.
I was blessed to video record both Stewart's and Juber's Tucson Kitchen Musician Association performances for my 1990s TV show. I met with them personally - real nice men.

My favourite song of his.
sublime and always a pleasure to hear Juber
Bravo. Soulful vocals and the interweaving guitars are heavenly!
Fantastic. Love this song. Laurence Juber as usual at his best.
Oh the memories from this wee song ...... Al's voice is a classic, better with age
Beautiful voice, the same voice...
His voice remains the same, that's awesome.
what a great version of his classic song.Always a brilliant songwriter.
Al Stewart is still fabulous!!
Reminds me of Dad, born in Bedminster but told us of his Bristol childhood and fond mentions of Clifton.Another great AS track
What years was he there? I spent 5 yrs there, 3 in the pre & 2 in upper
Ohh! How did I miss this version? Jacqueline Bisset was on mind and remembered haven't heard Clifton for quite a while. Mr. Juber is as usual extraordinary. Mr. Stewart's voice is still pristine.
(I fell in love w 'Year of the Cat')..♬‧*˚✧♬‧*˚ This is a fabulous song ..classic Al Stewart sound.
Flipping marvellous. Please come back to Marin County soon! Im a UK immigrant for a bit and miss my fix of Al in the Uk so need you to come here.......
ANy vintage AL songs done live are always great. I;m still asking him to play Life and Life Only. Never lol
Quite simply beautiful and magical
Clifton, m my old school... before jet airliners!
I always liked this song too. I think this was the first Al Stewart song I ever heard.

ONE OF THE GREATESTS BESIDE CAT STEVENS AND BOB DYLAN.
Sweet.
A great performance.
Sounding great Al
Absolutely sublime! Wonderful! Thanks!
He is just amazing :)
Exquisite!
Beautiful!
"The rain came down like beads"...that line has always stuck with me. Even Leonard Cohen would struggle to come up with a line like that.
And "bouncing on the noses" as well.
@@ivorykhan159 Absolutely. The whole song is a lyrical masterpiece.
‘Feet squelch soggily across the grain’. 🤷♂️. Amazing!
@@FatmanPops Hell, yeah! Never mind the whole verse around Jacqueline Bi-SAY!
Wonderful song
Sin palabras me kedo para describir sta maravilla eskerrik asko al
Voice is getting older,he's some singer.
보이스 짱!
I love the imagery. Al Stewart is so good at creating, and the way his songs are always about something more than cliche or generic topics usually covered by popular music.
Just like Lowry from Salford
voz 100% aun
Sort of looks like Pete Seeger at the end.
can anyone explain the lyric 'flock of salty ears'?
Well, Al could!
Great question
Is it me or does he never actually quite say it as "A flock of salty ears" lol
Monsters!
