Great review! A few weeks ago I had the opportunity of a direct comparison between the 990b and 930b. My sound impression was, that the 990b has a little bit better subwoofer, a slightly wider soundstage and a better midrange sector. When I switched to the 990b the sound got more fullness. Vocals and Instruments had more body and sounded more refined. The result of the bigger size and the additional 5 speaker in the 990b is definitely hearable. It's not a huge difference, but for me it's an important difference.
The 930b is also a very good soundbar and a great option, but in a direct comparison imO not as much impressive as the 990b.
I therefore purchased the 990b and I am absolutely happy with it. So far I have no problems of disconnection at all.
For smaller rooms the q930 is sufficient!

@@etherealyuu means it would be sufficient for 22m2 room. Of course the Q990 is a bit more powerful with improved subwoofer desing, either way both soundbar's subs are shaking the room

Thanks for the review. It seems like a concerning number of purchasers are have serious and annoying connectivity problems. I wish this was mentioned. This is the only thing keeping me from purchasing this system. It seems to be hit and miss but not resolved by Samsung satisfactorily and has been going on for some time.
Welcome back Jonah! Great to have you back! This is the video I've been waiting for. If you had to pick either the Q990B or Sony HT-A9 which one would you choose? It's down to those two for me. If you would happen to choose the HT-A9, would you wait until the next gen.(HT-B10 perhaps?) or just pull the trigger on the A9? Appreciate it! Again, glad you're back!
That’s a hard choice honestly! It kind of depends on your room layout. If you have optimal positioning, then I’d probably go with the Q990B, if not and you’d like a little more bass, then go with the A9 and a SW5. I wouldn’t want to the A9 without the SW5 sun though, so keep that in mind. Massive price difference there as well.
This sound bar can be sometimes Got for just $1200. Somehow I don't think the HT A9 is at that range. Also adding a Sub for will be the extra cost there.

There is absolutely no need to face the sub driver to your listening position or else. You might want to check how low frequent waves behave in a room and you will see, that turning the Subwoofer will have no impact on its sound.

When the sub is rectangle, it is important (for me) that the sub is front facing. Because I placed my sub horizontally. I wouldn't be able to do that if the sub is side facing.
The bar it's louder after 11 you will notice

I think the Disney movies can give you the best Atmos effect, like Eternals with the scene with Arishem talking to the girl
Just got one a week ago( renewed by samsung,not a scratch everything factory wrapped saved 600.00$)i havent upped my sound bar in 12 yrs.( had the old sony with the black glass top and zero options for a sub or satellites) all i can say is wow.the little screen is hard to read other than that love the thing.no wires i have not experienced dropouts.thanks for the tip on the sub menu in the app for individual speaker fine tuning.just watched civil war avengers on disney with the imax enhanced,read the imax enhanced audio is still on the engineers plates but nonethe less ..crystal clear and the tv/ soundbar decoded it just fine.my suggestion to newbs get stands for the rears that way you can put them where you like without holes in your wall till you decide where.i think the upfire rear speakers work as intended on lower ceilings.i see no need to mount them up high...my 2 cents.

I would like to be more immersed. If it helps I’m in a square from with my rear and my seat in line up against the back wall. I’m about 14ft from the tv/sound bar. Thank you!!!

A) You can't put a driver capable of sub-bass frequencies on the front of that enclosure - if you really want it to face forward, just turn it on it's 'side' or whichever way the sub faces to the front.
B) The display the top was to allow the front to remain dedicated to the speaker's drivers.
There’s a port on the back of the subwoofer, if you turn the enclosure, the port would be facing to the right which isn’t ideal.
They had room on the front for the display, it was just easier to put it on top.
I bought the Q930B for a great price and I love the system truly
So THE question... This or the Sony A7000 setup with new rears and 360 spacial audio, etc...? :)

I am deciding on a sound bar between the Samsung q990b and the LG LG S95QR. I just got a new LG 77' C2 OLED. With the Samsung function with the LG TV as good as the LG sounder?

Hi Jonah, first of all great review. Thanks a lot. Was waiting for this from you. I am from India🇮🇳 and I am hearing a lot of people having to return this sound bar because of connectivity issues either with the rear speakers or with the sub woofer. Have you faced this issue or do you know anyone who has faced a similar issue. This sound bar is available in India at $1k sometimes.
I also had an issue of hanging but i haven't returned because this soundbar has an reasonable price and in that category it's best than jbl bar 9.1 so just waiting if any software update comes and this problem gets solved🤞

@@karthikr177 There was a drop in sound for 1 second, and I never faced them again. It is just a software glitch which will be fixed in a firmware update, and it is not a big deal as it sounds amazing.
Once again another great review! I had the Sony a5000, sw5 and the sr5 and while it sounded pretty good I wanted more of an atmos presence. I just picked this up today and hoping it does a better job than the 5000. The Sony sub was great but for a small apartment a little too much!
Just wish App had an option to control Voice Enhancement intensity. It’s just that much difference of being perfect system

Thank you for the review, it was very helpful. As much as I want to get the Q990B to pair with my QN900B, I will wait until the next year model is out when it can support 4k/120 hz HDMI 2.1 passthrough + fix the rear speakers disconnecting issues (chip). Right now I pair the tv with the Vizio Elevate P series soudnbar and it is more than good enough for now. I have been using the Elevate for about 7 months and it has never given me any issues. I do hate the Vizio app, which is trash compares to the SAMSUNG Things app.
Does the P series Elevate have HDMI 2.1? Or maybe the newer M series elevate 2022 have HDMI 2.1?
@@chazcarpenter1559HDMI 2.0 only for now, but I think a new P series sound bar will be out soon since Vizio hasn't released the new P series tvs yet. Vizio will probably release both new P series tvs and sound bars using the new mediatek chip at once. The 2022 M series sound bar has HDMI 2.0 only as well.
Did you connect the apple TV 4k/blu ray player / amazon fire TV stick directly to the hdmi in of sound bar? Or did you just use the hdmi earc of your TV? My tv doesn't have earc, so I won't get atmos

I'd love to get this sound bar but I've been looking at the specs of my current TV an LG SK8500. It unfortunately appears to only have 4x 2.0 ARC HDMI. Not eArc. So I'm wondering if I bought this sound bar would I be able to get proper Dolby atmos with it. As much as I'd love to get this sound bar I couldn't justify buying a new TV just to make the sound bar work fully. I've had two TVs in the last 6 years
You have Hdmi inputs on the soundbar also, so if you connect for example apple tv, cable box etc you get the best sound this way
@@Uuuung Thanks I got the soundbar in the end and tried it for the first time last night. It took me a while to get the sound from my Xbox One X but I eventually managed it. And after looking in the sound settings of my xbox and seeing I needed to install a Dolby Atmos app in it I finally got it to show Atmos on the front display.

as a Disabled vet with hearing issues I noticed right away was well worth the upgrade and it was just that a upgrade...a huge noticable by anyone kind :) but the only nag is she who shall not be named is always listening@@robi893
I find it hard to upgrade because the resale market isn't very high for home theater :/

I am the owner of this soundbar and i am from India. I have noticed an issue of being hanged for about listening for 2 hrs at volume 20. The problem is like the soundbar just gets freezed nothing works while using with remote or from the switches on top of the soundbar. Just display blinks when we use from remote or switches. So please you just notice this problem in your soundbar does it exixts or not. It's an humble request i am just suffering from last 5 months by this problem. Thank you.
If I would listen for 2 hrs at volume 20 my neighbours will probably hang me way before the device hangs. But I never had this issue when listening at lower volume levels for longer amounts of time.
The system is amazing for music especially with Apple Music because of Dolby Atmos. Spending the money for this soundbar to play Spotify should be a crime
Perhaps someone can advise me. Is there a standard setting I can change that will prevent super loud music and action scenes and barely audible dialogue. I have to watch with the sound control in hand, constantly adjusting. Thanks!

I’ve had the 990B for about six weeks. Zero connection issues so far. I’ve been very happy with it. Huge upgrade from my LG SP9YA.
No problems here either. It seems sensitive to certain routers nearby for as far as I can read. People having issues could try to see if it helps when moving things around a bit, disabling radio signals and stuff like that. But there are also a lot of defective devices I suppose.
I am looking for better bass, i have heard Bose soundbar 900 with Bose Bass Module 500, the bass is very clear and punchy, but i didn't heard Samsung Q-990B. Can someone suggest, which one would be better?

I’m looking for a soundbar to go with my Sony A80J television. My first choice would obviously be Sony but my main concern is music and not movies. I leaning toward the A7000 from Sony but because of price I’m also considering the Sonos arc and Bose 900. There anywhere from 200 to 400 dollars cheaper than the Sony A7000. Don’t want to get an entire system, just the sounbar. My wife thinks adding a subwoofer and rear speakers would be too much for our living room. I figure the Sony would pair up with the television I have easier than the Sonos or Bose. If you would give me your opinion I would appreciate it. Thank you very much.
I think your usecase is music you should look into stereo systems with hdmi earc like klipsch the fives or you can pair any passive speakers of your choice with marantz nr1200 (my preference would be monitor audio bronze 100 or kef q350) you would get way better performance than ht a7000 for your money

If we had a designated entertainment area, like a den, something like that would be the best option. Many years ago I had a system that sounded great. I had book case speakers, turntable amp and the rest. Loved that system but we need something with a smaller “footprint” like a soundbar. I have heard A7000 .. just won't be recommending you for music listening.. if u can stretch, 1st would be Sony HT A9, then second would be q990b.
But if u like bookshelf speakers size, just go for Wharfedale 85 anniversary edition, or Big heftier Lincoln. Those are pure bliss to ears for music.
Your soundbar will not sound as good without a sub. I have the Bose 900 and even with its immense power it is underwhelming without a sub. Not having a sub is like a cake without icing.

I was also looking at the JBL 9.1 which comes with the sub. I want to go with a Sony system because I have a Sony television but the A7000 soundbar along with a sub is close to $2000. That’s a lot more than I want to spend. Even the sounbar itself is $1399. Sony has a couple other systems that have a sub with sounbar, the model HT-G700 is a 3.1 system and only costs $600. They also have an older model HT-Z9F, if I can find one it would cost $900, maybe less. I always figure if you buy cheap, you get cheap and I’d hate to spend $600 to $800 and not be happy with the result. I’m going on here and I’m sure you have other things to do but I do want to thank you for taking the time to respond to my question. Have yourself a great day.

Hi guys. I have a old LG 5.1 home cinema set up (HX976TZW), with 5 individual speakers. Do you think I will hear much of a difference upgrading to a modern sound bar surround system, specifically the Samsung Q990B? Thanks for any input.
Definitely, I also upgraded from an older 5.1 setup and this is on a whole other level, especially when playing Dolby Atmos content. The sound field is so seamless, you'll have to experience it to understand it. Sound seems to come from every direction, not just from the rear left or the front right (for example), that's the sound bubble everyone is talking about. And the sound is crystal clear, you can hear every bell and chime. It's also amazing how wide the front sound field can be, coming from just a bar. It sounds way, way wider and it amazes me how this is possible without having speakers in those positions every time again. I don't think you'll regret it. It can pay of to try and find it cheaper though, I got mine for as low as 900 euro (Netherlands), which is an absurdly low price for the quality it delivers.

I just recently purchased the hq990b, one issue I've experienced is that when I test atmos or dtx, the right and left front and rear output don't seem to have a difference, the video highlights the front and I hear it from the rear and vice versa. Any ideas?
I had the same problem. I bought this system based on this guy's reviews. I know have to ship a brand new system to Samsung. I will not be buying another Samsung. This is a huge problem with this system if you look at their website.
I have no rear sound anymore from them and the blu lights are on.

if you have to chose between q990b and sony hta5000 with sw5 and rs5 surround. i am really confused between the two. what would you chose knowing that i own a sony tv x95j?
Depending on where you are this soundbar is sold at anywhere between $1200- $850. The Sony set up that you have told here will be sold at a minimum of 2500 dollars. For less than half the price of the Sony I think the Samsung is a much better option. But if you have the money and you are willing to invest in a solar system then go for it.

Ravinder if u have the budget just go for Sony HT- A9 with Sony 300 w subwoofer. That gives good punch in voice and overall effect.. but yes i felt it better and planning to upgrade my Samsung HT q800 to Sony HT A9.
Have you read the reviews from users on the Samsung website...they all complain that the subwoofer and rear speakers constantly disconnect. I've own a top of the line soundbar by Samsung and had the same issues. This is exactly why Sonos is the best...never had 1 connection issue ever with my surround sound system with subwoofer. You know it's bad when a product only gets 3 stars on their own website

Are you watching those movies on stream ? Because a native 4k disk with Dolby atoms sounds way better than streaming it
I typically stream downloaded movies through my Plex Server. They are 4K with Dolby TrueHD audio. I'll also do some testing with Netflix, Disney Plus, etc. as this is where most people will be watching.

Thanks for the review! I was on the fence about these due to disconnection issues. Recently purchased a Sonos Arc, surrounds, and sub but think I will keep the Samsung which is significantly cheaper on sale and seems comparable. Do you believe the Samsung compared to the Sonos? Also any recommendations on rear speaker stands?
This soundbar is trash compared to the Sonos Arc surround sound system. I've own the top of the line soundbar from Samsung and had the same connection issues. With Sonos I've never had any connection issues. Lastly soundbars by Samsung, LG, and Sony all have the same issue...their subwoofers are trash especially for music. I know the Gen 3 subwoofer is expensive but it blows away the competition

I keep seeing conflicting information on this soundbar... Does the soundbar itself have/require a power brick, or does the unit plug directly into a power outlet? I really want to hide the cables but having a power brick makes that nearly impossible unless you mount the soundbar directly under the TV (which will be detrimental to the ATMOS functionality).
It does not have a power brick, it plugs directly into a power outlet.
If only Samsung offered a white option I'd buy the system.
Q990b left rear speaker falls put all the time.. bad connection.. I sure that there are other people that have the same prob.. called samsung.. bad customer service.. the could not help.. no replacement either.. very disappointed with the brand..
The app is lacking IMO doesn't even tell you what type of sound is playing.

I have the 950A and love it. No need for an upgrade based on the cost. Yes that cloth is yuck.
You need some pictures up in your room, it sounds very echoey... It could be your mic but I'm sure it's your room, which won't help when testing these devices.
I don’t understand the appeal of Sonos. Their bars sound hollow and plastic-like. Add to that the fact that they are over priced and they’re definitely not worth it.

Thanks for the review, it is much appreciated! I am looking to upgrade and might go this model here to upgrade my older Samsung HWK850. Is there a way to hook up a record player to these? I am having issues finding a soltion. My old Samsung has the aux port, so I just go that route and it works great. Been looking at many sound bars now and none have the aux anymore, and sonos looks like a major pain in the wallet to connect a record player.
I see a bunch of devices on Amazon that convert composite video to HDMI. It looks like they require line level audio, so depending upon your turntable, you might also need a preamp?
