Nice video. Long ago, the Boy Scouts used to teach both versions of Rolling Hitches - the Taut Line when tying around a pole, and the Midshipman's when tying around rope. The reason is, as you point out, because the Midshipman's grabs the rope better. The second wrap placed behind the first forms what's called an Awning Hitch because it immediately grips a rope that's actively under strain and allows one to complete the Midshipman's without slippage. At some point the Scouts simplified what they taught.
You are exactly correct sir. I actually prefer the crossed Rolling Hitch even when tying to something like a pole or a tool. I find it to be a bit more secure.
If you added another turn to the end of the tautline hitch, it would look just like a prusik knot. Awesome videos! I need to have all these stored on my phone somehow. Like a pocket-sized video book of knots.
After watching your video, I use Kalmyk loop knot on the tarp or tent end, and use your Midshipman's hitch at the stake end or tree. It works great. Thanks Ben
Nice, clear & quick to the point vid. I like the comparison of two knots, tought line has always be my go to for adjustable loops, but the midshipmans is just as easy to tie with the added locking cinch. Will now be my go to for adjustable loops. Cheers 🍻
Check out the Blakes Hitch Ben. Its generally replaced the tautline in tree climbing. As a side note if the tautline is slipping just add another wrap. Blakes Hitch grabs excellent and releases well under load. Generally considered superior to the tautline. Although absolutely nothinf is wrong with a tautline.

Hello, I have a video request: my school requires us to wear a suit daily, so I bought myself a Skeletool CX (mainly because they still had the carbon fiber handle version in store). But I have some issues with it - the pocket clip isn't ideal for carrying the multitool in the inside pocket of the jacket and there's not a lot of tools in the Skeletool in general. So I've been trying to find some comparisons between any of those three tools: - SOG Powerpint, - Leatherman Skeletool, - Leatherman Juice (any of the models), but there are no videos like this. So, since you have all three of those tools, it would be really nice if you'd do a comparison between those three models.

Question. The way you tied the taut line with over over then over… it slips. Shouldn’t it be over over then under or under under then over. ????
