Life of Lichen

I enjoyed this, it was very informative.
There are some fictional stories regarding lichen.
One by John Wyndham, and another whose author I cannot recall.
This latter described an experiment that hybridised grass with lichen.
Due to lichen's ability to break down rock and live directly on and from that rock, that grass would grow, prolifically, on anything.
Eventually everything on the whole planet was covered in this grass, except a ship at sea. Then a patch was found on the ships deck....!
