    Put a mattress protector on the mattress and pillow protectors.

      I've just got a new mattress and the first thing i got was a bamboo waterproof matress protector. I got one from a company called Panda. I promise you nothing goes through it, it doesn't make a crinkly noise, it's fairly easy to wash, is supposed to keep you cool and has really protected my new mattress. They are pretty expensive, (mine is a euro king size and cost £40) but you'll save your mattress from stains and spills. Worth it.

      I use mite-proof mattress, pillow and blanket covers underneath the regular sheets, because I have a dust (mite) allergy. Works really well too.

    It looks a lot better! Still, I really really hope that the new roommate gets a fully encasing zip up mattress protector since it was in a moldy room, even with the surface cleaned it's not safe to breath so close to (when sleeping) since the gunk/mold is inside it too!

    Top tip- if you have an upholstery cleaner like that Bissel one (I have the same one, bought it when my cat had an accident after moving and being too scared to go to her litter tray), then every few months just give your mattress and sofa a once over. Keeps them regularly clean instead of having to do backbreaking deep cleans on them, and it preserves the life span of them by avoiding stains and such!

  • @Jaessae
    @Jaessae 8 месяцев назад +21

    Not sure about the UK, but in Germany you can rent these upholstery cleaners for a day, or just a few hours, for maybe 20 Euros (100 Euro as a deposit, you get it back after returning it, obviously) at a hardware store. Done so several times already, and it makes *all* the difference. The ones at stores are usually bigger (with wheels), and can be used both for carpets as well as upholstery. Done carpets with it, and sofas. Absolutely awesome.

    First of all, you did an amazing job and it's incredible how much gross stuff you're willing to deal with, lol. Second, even though you did an incredibly thorough surface clean of that mattress, the stuff that gets deep inside is always going to be there. I strongly recommend, for the health of your new flatmate and to protect the mattress from further damage, to get a fully encased mattress cover. There are several available on Amazon. Looking forward to your next video!

    • @lzlzlz347

      Yes!! Those mattrass covers are really cheap and easy to find online. I got one that fully covers the matrass and closes with a zipper. And another terry fitted sheet that I use underneath my regular sheets. I throw them in the wash about 2-3 times a year to keep it fresh. It extended the life of my old mattress a few years!

    • @hannahg.8572
      @hannahg.8572 8 месяцев назад +8

      I couldn't agree more. They should ideally get a new mattress, the old one is contaminated, then put a protector around it.
      In my country of residence, we even try to put the mattress outside without a protector a few days per year, when their is no rainfall, either in sub-zero temperatures and/or in the bright sunshine, to air them out and reduce the microbiome that inevitably likes to live in your mattress. The cold and/or UV light kill off a lot of it.

      When selling bedding to my customers I always tell them make sure you have a mattress and pillow protectors and like the previous comment place another sheet over that then the sheet you will be sleeping on. It may feel like it's a lot but it makes a huge difference. Bea you're a star thank you for every thing that you do 😊

    I honestly would've got a new mattress, despite how painful and expensive it is. I don't believe you can truly clean a mattress after that much filth. Also, if you get a new one, ALWAYS put on a zip up sleeve and even a waterproof mattress protector. They don't cost much and they will keep the mattress nice and clean.

    I used to live in UK back when I was 15. Our flatmate moved out after a massive fight and I stood up to the challenge of cleaning his room. It was sooo smelly and dirty! I don't think anyone had deep cleaned before. It took me around a week just to clean one room top to bottom. It was the most satisfying experience seeing the room so fresh, but the rest of the house looked quite dirty in comparison. If I ever move back to england, I'm deep cleaning on day one, because those houses change inhabitants often and we humans do tend to leave some nasty stuff behind. I've experienced it where I live now, but UK was on a different level.

    I commented on your most recent short but just trying to reach out as a letting agent in the UK, have you contacted TPO about this? They should be able to give you some great advice and potentially help you take action against the landlord- things such as not providing smoke and carbon alarms are against the law you really need to be better protected as a tenant! x

      In Australia, we have tenants unions where you can get free legal advice. I was threatened, bullied and almost scammed at my last house, but with the help of the tenant's union lawyer, and by always keeping a paper/email trail, I showed I had been lied to by the agents and that the owners had tried to scam me to stage their house for sale, something not discussed at lease time.Agents will make you feel like a second hand citizen but you are doing your best. I hope it all works out with your new flat mate. You did brilliantly on that mattress but like others have suggested, an encased cover is the way to go. Good luck.

      Yeah, that roommate is actually a bad person for just moving out so short notice, not cleaning up after herself at all and leaving her stuff in that state. It's unbelievably inconsiderate, rude, shameless and honestly exploitative to literally dump that on her roommate (Bea) to clean up after her.
      The only way that would be acceptable is if they discussed it in advance and she (Bea) volunteered that she's fine with cleaning up after her AND is being paid to take care of it, which she deserves but clearly isn't receiving.
