Life at the cottage- a slow living, silent vlog

- I really enjoying being able to learn to do things the "old-fashioned" way, as so today, I thought I'd share the process of making butter :). I made a quick sandwich with honeycomb and lavender to take with me for a quiet afternoon at the river.
Butter-making process:
1. Add room-temperature cream to the butter churner
2. Churn until the solid butter separates from a white liquid (buttermilk)
3. Strain and squeeze as much of the liquid from the butter as possible
4. Rinse the butter thoroughly in clean water (you may need to replace the water a few times) (If the butter is too soft, you can add a few blocks of ice to the water which will help harden the butter and make it easier to manipulate)
5. Add salt/herbs of your choosing, mixing well with butter paddles

I'm 70 and grew up on an isolated farm in NZ. We had no electricity, relying on tilly lamps, wood burning stove and kerosene fridge. I remember butter being made by our cowman-Gardner and mum doing the washing on a washboard after it had been boiled in woodfired copper. When we got a huge diesel generator she got an agitator washing machine and the house was wired for lighting. We thought we were very modern. Mum had three of us children plus dad and the farm staff to cook for so she was never able to do anything as serenely as this utube shows.
Wow! That's just amazing- it sounds like your mom was really a hard worker. This video does definitely try and focus on the "beautiful, ideal, and peaceful" way of looking at things😊 , but I can imagine that not having the option of going out to quickly buy butter when you really don't feel like churning it, must have made it a real chore and not serene at all!!😄

I want to live like this but where do you find land like this? Did you build the cottage yourself? How do you find land that is safe from hunters?
The cottage was build many years ago by my great great uncle :) It's not totally secluded so there are people around, and it's not a big hunting area, so I feel very safe :)
