8:34 is Butcher Boys, 9:15 is Meridian Collision, 11:10 is 178th and Sunrise blvd where Fred Meyer is now, 11:44 is the landfill off to the left. 13:55 is Howe Rd where the Shell and B&R Auto Wrecking is now. Just past that is Gundie's Auto Wrecking.
At the 15 minute mark, you can see a red house, of to the right, on a hill. That is my great grandmother's house, built around 1920 by my great grandfather. After she passed in 1980, a dentist bought it and spruced it up. In October 1971, when the speed limit was still 70mph, my uncle David was coming home from school and was hit by a car that passed a stopped school bus and killed him instantly, right in front of my grandparents. Not trying to be morose here (although I guess this is), but that area still feels dark and melancholy. An awful time for many in the community there. Back on track... Off to the right, just before that, is my grandparent's land, which used to go back about 30 acres. The used to own all of that land, south past where the fairgrounds were. They platted those grounds back around the same time as the home was built... want to say 1916 ish. I spent my youth riding horses and swimming at their house, building forts in the woods, and trying not to get stung by hornets as we played around in the middle of the "back 5 acres" as my grandparents called it. A grand youth, lost to time... at least I have those indelible memories, but it does hurt to see it they 'way it used to be.' I never thought I'd be emotional about it, but indeed I am. Thanks SO MUCH for posting this. Amazing.
I grew up in Seattle and I feel the same way. So many memories whipped out💔 sometimes when I’m with my nieces and nephew I tell them where places used to be and where we used to go. Times were so simple
@@JakeRoot Well, I grew up out there, and it WAS 70mph (regardless of what you say) until 1974, when the federal law to reduce speeds to 55mph became the standard.
Wish we could go back to this time when Puyallup wasn’t insanely polluted with traffic, traffic lights, apartments, and parking lots for repurposed structures!
I tried to explain what South Hill used to look like when I was a teen. "Past 128th it's nothing but trees and mom & pop small farms ,all the way to Eatonville " happy to see this again, sad the trees gone and the farms.
I remember moving here in 1991. I thought wow I think we are moving out into the boonies. I remember thinking what if he house catches fire or something. It was such a relaxing peaceful drive home then. No sirens or maybe one a month. So quiet.
Awesome video footage. I lived here back in the late 80's before moving back to California. Since I've been back I've tried to explain to my husband what Meridian use to look like back then. Now I can visually show him. Awesome video, thanks. So sad it's changed and all the beautiful nature has been removed.
Hey just wanted to appreciate you gathering these videos on your platform. I saw your video months ago SR-507 and when I saw the Parkland Theater, that definitely hit home for me. Really appreciate you.
Omg before the mall. That was a farm on the right. Also right before the freeway overpass, to the right was a tree farm. I was looking for our scout or our celica going opposite direction of you this whole video because this is where i grew up from 3 years old to beginning 8th grade, so we were there during your video. I went to the coop (preschool) on the left side of the road from firgrove elementary on the right for kindergarten. And then they built pope elementary up the hill and farther down passed 144th. We lived up the hill on 118th off of 144th at the left turn of the cider press on the right. The only thing i didn’t realize is that 144th didn’t have a light! I can’t even imagine this. This became one of the worst intersections for crashes up there even with lights. This brings back memories. I remember it being this woodsy and rural. I also remember that 7-11 on the left (76 on the right) because we would go there for slurpees of course. Once you get past the thunder field bar (?) on the right, i get lost. We didn’t go that way much except to go to mt. Rainier, northwest trek, or the landfill.
Summer of 82 The first summer I had my driver’s license. Road tripped to East Tawas Michigan from Long Island with my 2 best friends. Such great memories
Wow, I've lived in Puyallup since I was 2, I'll be 21 in April. I am very familiar with Southill. I've never seen what it looked like in this time period before the mall was built. It was strange and interesting at the same time. Thanks for posting these.
Never would have guessed that one of the oldest businesses in Puyallup is that Burger King lol genuinely surprised to see it there. Awesome video! I wish I could find one from the mid 90s so I could see it how I remember it as a kid
I moved to Puyallup from Grapeview/Allyn in the spring of 1982. Only lived there until 1984 but loved it. Went back to visit in 2018 and it looked so incredibly different. Not the Puyallup I remembered. But it was still good to see it. Enjoyed this video.

My relatives lived in Puyallup and this was the way there. I remember this drive so well. I so long to go back to these days! If I knew I'd miss them so bad, I'd have enjoyed them more. 😔
My grandmother went to firgrove when it was just the small brick school house. And so great to see the cider press on 144th. Was still around when I was a kid in the 90s. That’s when south hill took the dive.
16.25 Graham National Autoparts, repair, and gas station Otto and Vai Sorenson owned. On the right across 224th St is Terry's Store. Across 161 from the Store is the Yellow Rose Cafe, run by Jerry and Nelma. I can't remember their last names. There was an alley behind the gas station, and a dance hall on the other side of the alley.
Holy ish. I was 9. We lived west of Meridian on 128th. So many places I recognized and good lord, where south hill mall is now! I need to show my sister this. She'd remember it better than me since she was 21.
The video started out on 104th St. just around the corner from where I used to live. Sadly the neighborhood is gone now and where my house once stood is now a park & ride lot.
For anyone watching this video I need to say something. I was born in 1981 and we came to Graham when I was 2. I have lived here in the area and have seen a ton of change. Currently, there is a proposal for a new airport. I am referring to the site of what they are calling pierce county east. Unfortunately, I am absolutely convinced that this site will ultimately be selected and built upon. Watching this video brings back memories. At the same time, seeing all the construction that was going on back then, it almost seems like this has been the plan the entire time. How do you cover up 3 wrecking yards and 3 landfills? Well with a huge airport of course.
Yeah it would be sad for the community if they were to build an airport here. But would it be for the best? I just found out about another smaller dump in the area that few knew existed. The area is full of wrecking yards and has been steadily polluted for many years now. The methane scent that is released from "hidden valley" can be smelled from miles away. I personally know about a young woman who lived by lipoma firs that died a couple years ago from cancer. She was only 23 and all of her organs shut down when she passed. Perhaps the methane had nothing to do with it. But I am not surprised that this very same area has been selected as a finalist.
I do not think McChord Air Force Base is going to allow an international airport smack in their flight paths. They're always overhead, some C-17 or Chinook, an Apache or a Blackhawk, any time day or night. But, we are in upsidedown world, so I guess anything can happen. The Sanitary Landfill is now Lipoma Firs, an appropriate name, if I may say so.
44 now grew up here close to 200th and meridian. . Loved this area Now its full of traffic. Not enough roads To many people and overpriced on housing , land and everyday items.. 40 years has changed drastically. 😢😢😢😢 Like to go back to when it was simple and not rushed
This is where I live, you can see where the post office is and right next to it where Safeway would be later on and also where the south hill mall was built
Yes, the mall wasn't completed until 1988, expansion in 92. The video goes through Graham, to Eatonville and ends at hwy 7. Go left and they would have passed LaGrande in route to Alder Lake/Dam. Turn right and you would drive toward Spanaway - Tacoma.
I really hope there is some of the suburbs of vancouver. I moved to puyallup when I was 14 from there in 2005 but I'd love to see my home town in the 70s/80s. I currently live in Richland Wa, it would be awesome to see some old footage of the tricities as well.
Wow, that’s a blast from the past! So different now, but just imagine how it will be at the next 40 year mark; probably shopping and housing all the way to Graham, no actual green space dividing them. Time marches on…
I built a nice 3,600 sq ft home (lower level was framed and plumbed but unfinished) on two and a half acers for $99,900 at the end of the cul-de-sac in the spring of 1981 on 149th Street which is a right-hand turn at the 8 minute 25 second point on this drive.
That was interesting; I didn’t really watch past 304th, but at that point, it’s pretty much the same today, anyway, right? 😂 It was crazy to see the 176th intersection, where Fred Meyer is supposed to be, and Sunrise Blvd not even built yet.
Eatonville has changed some, but mostly the same. The 4 way stop is a light, gas is gone on the right. Grocery store is the same .... over priced. Cool video.
I'd like to see it listed start to end point for comparison. I know it looks different now from what I remember, but this video is before my time as well Edit: at 24:51 that is 304th and meridian. So it actually isn't that much different, out that way at least

I bought my first pack of cigarettes at that Mobile station the same year this video was made.. The smokes cost a 1.25 a pack and I was 15 years old,,, That seems so strange to me now.
Damn! 1.25? Taxes in Washington were always high. I was paying 99 cents a pack 12$ for a carton in 1997. Some places charged more. Pack of cools were 1.25 a pack. Gas was 1.10 a gallon. This was in California.
westport wa.tourist are like all the bad in the world i can say. but it is quiet most of the time. i moved to a small town .good old times. fast cars. carbureted old cars. smooth old cars. have that now again. love it. we get it all.

Omg thank you! I was lost after Buger King😂
I couldn't find the Brown Cow. Was it out of business by then? I know it was about halfway between Graham and Puyallup.... like 'northern' South Hill.
Thanks for the landmarks..
Thanks for the posting the exact video time of the landmarks. I got lost for a bit. LOL

Where does it start?
Looks like the overpass at 512, heading south.
94th I believe, right before you get to the entrance to 167 North and South.
It starts off by the ramp over the freeway headed towards the mall and target etc..
Looks like heading south past the 512 on ramp right at the beginning.
I'm not familiar with those milepost numbers though.
Wasn’t there a water park somewhere in the beginning?
