Did you ever figure this out?! Going through this now. Changed the alternator bc it went bad so when I did that I changed the tensioner hoping it would take the squeal away but it’s still loud as ever.new belt as well

Thought I'd jump in here as I've had this issue for almost a year now and just figured out what was wrong. On every major parts web site, including Amazon, they show different size belts for first gen R50s. Using Dayco as an example (most brands use the last three numbers for the same belts), you'll find that 5060415 and 5060405 are both listed and said to be an exact fit for a Mini R50. 506415 is essentially an inch bigger than the 506405. I'm willing to bet that if your belt is squealing on your R50, you've got a belt that's too big.
As I said, been dealing with this for almost a year now. Replaced my AC compressor last summer and have living with the belt squeal since then. I've replace the tensioner, alternator, and finally figured this out. Super frustrating but kind of the norm for these cars.

You are 100% right.. I couldn't get my squeal to go away until i got the right belt on there.

bro just got done with a customers car the same issue ... make sure your tensioner isnt outta roo to tension once belts on ... i had to put a shorter belt then it calls for so the tensioner would hold it tighter... you all are welcome

Thanks for this reply, this prompted me to research belt sizes and figured out that of the two belts recommended for this car, one is an inch bigger. Installed the shorter belt, no more squeal.

Andrew. Grab wd 40 or any lubricant. Run engine and spray each pulley until it goes away. It will pinpoint it. Did it recently and worked very well.

I hear you Pete and I know you know your stuff.. but I used WD-40 as a parts cleaner in particularly don't want to spray it where parts should be lubed.

@@RandomAndrew try any spray lubricant on the bearings for each pulley. It will help pinpoint the sequel.

Did you figure out the squeal cause?

Check the harmonic balancer. This model is known to have problems where the center of the pulley coming disconnected from the outer section. The rubber that is between the two breaks loose. Am thinking that you might have one that's slipping. Also, it appears that you have another common problem with Minis, a leaking front crankshaft seal. So, if you're going to pull the harmonic balancer, might as well replace the crank seal.

that engine needs a thorough cleaning! It looks like the pulley AND the entire motor have been out at sea for decades. lol.

Unfortunately needs exhaust valve work too. If and when i can afford to do the work all pulleys and seals are getting replaced along with the whole top end

spray some belt squeak stuff I guess, mine makes the same noise...I thought I spun a bearing...another thing is the A/C bearing...I think there is a kit for it. Try spraying 303 after cleaning the belt with brake cleaner.

Its your idler pulley located above the crank pulley. About $40 to replace

I think it ended up being a combo of the belt and tensioner, hasnt squealed in a long time now
