Thanks, just followed this procedure on my older Stairmaster Gauntlet Stepmill from the 1990's and it made a huge difference. I purchased a lower control board from Sportsmith 7 years ago for the same Stepmill and that worked perfectly. Sportsmith is great!
used my machine last night(made noises), and next morning found this video... thanx bunches, saved lots of time knowing what to do than guessing what to do.
Thanks so much for this video. I've been debating on buying a stair master for home use (since avoiding the gyms) but was concerned with them breaking down. This makes me feel a bit better
I've had lil slip ups in using these machines but it is not the fault of the company,it is the fault of my gym for not keeping up with which machine(s) are about to go bust. I advice to all users whom wish to avoid doing a face plant on the keyboard when the machine fails , is to feel out the steps, lean on them with your arm , hand on a step and if they have a clanky jerk to them and it is too easily gently pushed down.....NOTIFY GYM COUNSELORS AND GET THE MAINTENANCE PEOPLE ON IT quickly BEFORE anyone could get serious(or even hilariously) hurt and let any other guests approaching the machine know of it too.
Mine got sand grains in the chain when I moved it from the seller to my house. Any recommendations on how to remove this sand? Use degreaser like wd40? Then redo all the lithium grease I assume?
I would recommend first using compressed air to remove the bulk of the contamination. Then use a penetrating lubricant like “tri-flow” sportsmith.com/lube-triflow-lubricant-4-oz/product/p15211216/ to wash the remaining contaminates from the chain and replace the lubricant removed with the air. That should take care of the issue.
Thanks for your question. This machine does not use a motor. The steps rotate from the weight of the user. The resistance in the steps comes from the alternator's electrical field. The field changes by differences in the amount of energy supplied to the alternator. That is what creates the difference in stair speed when adjusted at the console.
When these machines break , it sounds far worse then it actually are , like a small shotgun blast they sound like , haha!! It can be embarrassing when caught on the machine when it breaks down.

You are very welcome.
Fantastic video. Do you do anything to the chain for maintenance? Other then using 30W, trying to un-kink if noticeable.
Best video hands down. Thank you!
