This is very profound thinking and very truthful. When I was considering a career in writing getting information was hard. What I heard from "literary experts" and scholars from an academic background was frustrating. It was only when I got on X that I began to see and become fully exposed to what I was looking for and to understand that there are many different kinds of writers. This niche is very very narrow and remains relatively unknown. You broke it down excellently Nic🎯
Hi Cole, I am Dennis from Kenya East Africa. Very intrugued by the way you have explained this. I knew this somehow, but have never been able to articulate it this way. Thank you so much for sharing
You are absolutely right that barely anyone else is breaking it down like this and showing writers how to bypass the gatekeepers to make a great living. Your insights and guidance are incredibly valuable for all of us so please keep sharing them or we will all keep spinning in this hamster wheel thinking there’s only one way to make it work! Thank you, thank you, thank you. 🙌
I had a huge mindset shift with what you just explained in the context of the coaching industry. I see many coaches who have small audiences yet make great money. However, some people have the perception that a big following equals big money, which is not always true. I do see your point about having clarity on how you want to optimize and what you ultimately aim to gain. Great video!
I love this format! Bringing the gold once again. I have two questions if you'd like to consider them: 1) What's one belief/mindset you've had to unlearn in your creative journey? 2) Why did you choose to double down on writing when most people consume more video content than written content?
I’ve been reflecting on this myself. I’ve switched my topics toward the business. Will be making more RUclips videos as well in this style. Thanks Cole
Just a thing I want to highlight... Mark Manson, the author of "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck" actually ran a blog for a really long time and for a while he was moving his content to youtube. After his book was a success, he focused a lot more time on his youtube career and even wrote a new book called "Everything is F*cked, a Book About Hope" which I liked even more. So even though it was mainstream, his first book helped him gain more opportunities in his youtube career and more followers.
Cole! Thank you for sitting down for coffee with me. 😉 Question for you upfront: How do you think about breaking the narrative and speaking out against the common, incorrect wisdom? What strategies / frameworks do you use? I love how often you "break" the narrative and peel back the curtain on writing. It's inspirational. It's a huge reason why I bought "The Art and Business of Online Writing". I'm working on doing the same thing around improv comedy. Even if you don't perform it live, just the practice of the soft skills is unbelievably valuable in itself. You're my blueprint.
I found this tremendously helpful, thank you for the depth of this video. I’m a shipper, journalist, academic, book coach, digital writer and literary writer finishing an MA in Creative Writing. You can see that I’ve not been educated on the paths - I just wanted to write a lot and I’m only now making money as a writer’s coach (I earned far less as a journalist, academic). The mindset around what you optimize for while allowing blending is key. Still working on it. Have you let go of your big dream of a literary novel? If yes, how?
Exactly right on how different people might be writing for different outcomes. Love the insight as always. These types of videos from you are my favourite. Informal chat speaking directly from experience with no hyperbole. Just balanced observation.
Hey Nicolas. Thanks for your thoughts on this. Your ability to think deeply comes through in your content. I cant speak for everyone but for an aspiring digital writer like myself thanks for all that you do!
You are right on. As a 50-year old professional writer, who writes for corporations, what the young writers are learning in college, even NOW, are not getting it. Exactly. Because of the gatekeeping way that writing is taught in college. But they will learn post-college. It's too bad academics don't understand this! What funds English and Writing Programs in the first place, aside from grants? Revenue from money-making earnings of a given college. Two classes I have applied 100% to advance my writing career were Technical Writing (college) and Business Writing (high school). Keep going with your content, preach the gospel that writers have to decide early (early 20s) and go deep, which ever path they pick. I chose to take the business writing route, only because I knew that would discipline me more--the deadlines are tougher, but perhaps it's a more soul-crushing grind vs. soul-fulfilling. I am trying to pivot now creatively, and feel I'm ready. I believe taking the opposite path would have been more difficult: young, impressionable would-be literary greats, who try their hand at commercial writing late in life. BTW, I think Atomic Habits is more a marketing endeavor more than anything. I can't recall ONE THING I learn from productivity and personal development books, but remember every poem or great work of literature that took my breath away.
Hi, what do you recommend I do to become a writer? I'm late 30's and realize I enjoy writing from doing Google reviews to places I visit. I can sit down and get engaged with my thoughts. But I have no education but a good paying job at a huge corporation. I really need another stream of income so I want to model on how to do this
Was literally thinking about that Jay Z example this morning.. and how you say volume wins... He dropped an album every year for 8 straight years between 96 and 03.. without dropping the quality of his music... no one did before in hip hop... you and dickie remind me of Jay and dame on the good old days
I’d be interested in hearing you talk about the “blend” between both paths. I don’t think you’re pigeonholed into either direction once you start either. You can weave to and from both status and money sides of the equation. Woody Allen and Bob Dylan are great examples.
Hi Nicolas, actually after watching your "volume matters" video I have started writing one tweet everyday to gain audience but I just wanted to know that is this enough or should I do more
@@nicolascole77Thanks Nicolas, before writing on twitter I was writing on my blog but after I watched your podcast with Ali Abdaal I started writing on Twitter, as you told that platforms like Twitter and Quora are the places were people read the most and after, I started writing on Twitter I have started to gain views more than my blog
I don´t understand how the digital writing will give you money if, as you said in another video of your that I saw, the platforms like X don´t want you direct your readers to your own landing page or store. I would like to understand the process of getting your followers to your products.
If you want to know more about what ghostwriting is, check out this other video I made: ruclips.net/video/4jmtULwbFO8/видео.html

Hey Nicolas, I am not a writer but I realize I want to be. What steps should I do? Is your ship 30 program for a compete beginner?

On twitter when you don't have a decent number of audience you should focus more on leaving valueable comments on other creators account.
@@B0bby1122 Thanks for this great advice
@nicolascole77 should I focus on one social media platform as a beginner. Also for twitter do you recommend a logo profile based on my niche?
